Making Goliath Bleed: Allstate Creates "Genarlow Wilson" Rule in Public Rebuke of Tom Joyner
Friday, October 28, 2011 at 9:20AM
The Blogmother In what only can be described as a very public rebuke of one of most powerful Black radio personalities in the country, Allstate, a major sponsor of Tom Joyner stated publicly that it does not trust Mr. Joyner's judgement. After Mr. Joyner invited Genarlow Wilson, a man convicted of aggravated child molestation, to be a speaker at the Allstate Tom Joyner Family Reunion, concerned women and men from around the country alerted Allstate to Mr. Wilson's past, including recording himself and five of his friends having sexual intercourse with an unconscious 17-year-old girl in a hotel room in Georgia and coercing a 15 year old girl into performing non- consensual oral sex on Mr. Wilson and his five friends. Clearly shocked and horrified that Tom Joyner would invite someone with Mr. Wilson's criminal past to speak at a "family" event which enticed young children to attend, Allstate took the extraordinary step of implementing a company-wide sponsorship policy which now requires organizers to submit a list of speakers to Allstate prior to the event so that Allstate can check their background in advance. It is a stinging public rebuke of the Tom Joyner, the insurance giant signalled that it no longer believed Tom Joyner or his staff were competent enough to make programming decisions without Allstate's oversight. - The Blogmother
Now THAT is the story of the past two weeks on this blog.
I want to thank each and every one of you who took time to call, email or write Allstate to express your concern that convicted sexual predator, Genarlow Wilson was being marketed to children who attended the Allstate Tom Joyner Family Reunion in September 2011.
Sure, Allstate issued contradictory public statements that reeeked of cowardice and hypocrisy on the issue of violence against women. But the one thing that was consistent was their announcement of a new policy which would require Tom Joyner to submit a speaker list to Allstate prior to an event. Assuming they keep their word and aren't lying, this has to BUUUUUUUUURN the chaps of the Genarlow Wilson and rape culture apologists in the Tom Joyner organization.
Now some of you may be disappointed that Allstate didn't issue a more emphatic public statement of rebuke. Heck, I was mildly irritated by their cowardly, weasely attempt to slither away from seriousness of what occurred. I'm equally appalled that in the middle of a month dedicated to raising awareness of domestic violence, Allstate, which runs something called the Purple Purse Project, would tell us that two weeks after many of you first alerted them to Mr. Wilson's criminal past, they still don't know the facts of a case that has reached final adjudication in the highest court of the State of Georgia. This means that any one of the hundreds of lawyers at Allstate could have merely done a Lexis or Westlaw search for "Genarlow Wilson" and all of the court decisions containing a summary of the facts in his case would have popped up within seconds. So for them to say they don't know the facts is a lie. Of course they know the unsavory facts about Mr. Wilson, but to acknowledge them would make Tom Joyner look worse than he already does. But I digress.
You accomplished A-LOT this week.
1. You sent a signal to Genarlow Wilson that his attempts to enter the "mainstream" by associating himself with corporate brands WILL. .BE. RESISTED. If you don't think he got the message, go read Mr. Wilson's whiney tweets over the last week.
2. You got a massive organization to initiate a new policy to screen speakers at sponsored events. THAT'S HUGE. Big organizations don't enact policy on a dime.
3. The creation of the "Genarlow Wilson" policy is validation that they think Tom Joyner damaged their brand and they have to protect it from him. THAT'S HUGE.
4. Somebody in the Allstate organization had their supervisor walk into their office this week and ask them "Um did you sign off on putting Allstate's name on this event featuring a convicted sexual predator? What the $*#&^ were you thinking????"
5. You've made Genarlow Wilson radioactive to any future consumer goods company. If he pursues a partnership, he does so knowing that he is placing their brand at stake so they'll be doubly ticked off when we come calling.
6. For the first time in history, someone held Tom Joyner and the Black Elite Establishment accountable for hoisting Genarlow Wilson on their shoulders and parading him through the streets as a hero for brutally violating two Black girls in that hotel room in Georgia.
7. You also sent a message to Mr. Wilson that his planned path as a youth speaker entering the public schools of America to gain access to captive audiences of impressionable young children will be met with resistance.
Did you get everything you wanted? No. But what you accomplished was pretty amazing. Can more be done? Absolutely. But pause for a moment to realize that you just made Goliath bleed. Tom Joyner thinks he can act with impunity and tap dance over the bodies of young Black girls, this week you (and Allstate) told him NO! he can't be pleased.
