Gina you are like a tree, when your branches need pruning you do so. I have read your blog for many years and sometime I would comment and other time I just absorbed the information and use it to make my life better. I left the black community mentally and physically years ago. My standards are strong and I continuce my journey. I understand why you decided to stop blogging. You have done your duty and there are many progessive black women who can carry the torch. Now its your time to enjoy your life. I wish you the best.

Gina, mid 30s white guy from Canada here, been reading and lurking since the beginning. Don't let your anger turn to cynicism, it's too easy. I think you are a fiercely intelligent, nuanced and passionate feminist voice and while I don't always agree with you, you are doing good work, which is best when it comes from your real concern and love for black women and girls, that is why you started this blog, remember ? You influence more than you think and reach beyond your target audience and this is good because it's all about what is wrong in the world too.

Don't retire. You are doing good in the world with your work here.

If you notice they used hands-on animation instead of generating this completely with computer animation. Very cool. And I like how Willie Nelson sang the song, "The Scientist" by Coldplay. Very haunting.

These are the people that get the encouragement, the resources, and the education to get hired for these jobs. So is it any wonder that we get entertainment that is seen though the eyes of a 20-50 year old white male.

I have been watching the show "Made in Hollywood: Teen Edition" for a while now. The show interviews the creative and production people behind the scenes for movies. For how long I have watched it, the interviewees have been the majority of white males. I have seen 1 white female who worked on the movie "Tangles". This morning, I saw a black male who was part of the creative team for, you guessed it, "Red Tales". I missed most of the show, so I don't know if other people of color worked on it.

I will faint dead away, if I ever see a black woman, working creatively behind the scenes.

I believe this speaks to what Black folks have to do now, is to go back to the start again.

First off after watching the entire commercial and then the behind the scenes, I have to say I love it. The best part to me is still Willie Nelson singing Coldplay. However, the attention to detail and the creativity that went into it was amazing. This was a grand idea, its only a commercial but its still pretty hot.

I did notice the lack of women and people of color. I did notice that these were mostly foreign born artists and technicians. Do we Americans not have the know how anymore? Im not sure...

Either way, thank you for posting. If this is indicative of the new direction WOAD is taking, then I am riding this bus with you as well. You are amazing.

I am so sorry about all of those nasty things they have said about you Gina. This blog is one of the ones that prompted me to start my own this past Monday. I have admired your care and concern and have been so blessed by it.

I can not believe what I have just read. That link has the video but I didn't click it. I just read what he said. Did he even consider that the girls they would first go after would be ours? Did he think that he is encouraging young boys to view women as sexual objects and that they are going to leave marks on those young girls' sexuality for life? Does he know how to think? Lord have mercy.

We are going to win. We have to. That is what black women have always done. We have always survived and now we actually have better odds because this time, we aren't being dragged down by the weight of the black "community". It's time to just let it go.

With regard to XXL magazine, yes it does matter that the Editor In Chief is a white woman since that means that the black man cannot even run his own magazine!!

This concept of Black entertainers speaking trash to Black identified media brings to mind Matthew 15:14: 'Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.' Vanessa being White means nothing in this situation....the color of the hand that sharpened and handed over the dagger is null and voided. Too Short is ghetto trash from way back. He built a musically empire on being 'real'. No matter how much Black folks move forward folks like Too Short will always keep digging ditches to derail and all progress. Usinig and abusing Black women is part of the keeping 'real' meme. And that my friends is why the enemy from within is so potent and dangerous...for many Black folks those of us in agreement with Gina are not 'real' Black folks...or seen as the enemy i.e. those against keeping it 'real'. It's a sad day to see a 50 year old man encouraging the sexual abuse and use of Black girls. Lord have mercy.

I completely bowed out of the black community earlier this year. I rarely listen to the black radio stations, read black magazines,or read black websites or blogs. Once and a while I'll lurk back to see if the rest of my estranged 'brothers and sisters' have gain an ounce of common sense. But, sadly all I see is a continuing death spiral. Seriously, what the heck is wrong with black folks. I swear black people are stuck in a permanent state of stunted adoloscence (sp). Nobody wants to grow up. Too Short is dang year 50 years old. Why is he being so stupid. Again, I've already cut up my 'black card'. Time to toss it in the trash.

And when did white women start caring about Black women anymore than anyone else??? NO, Vanessa Staten being white changes absolutely nothing! What, you think white women should get a pass when they are espousing hatred and Black-woman-targeted misogyny? Please!

Being white doesn't mean you can't tell when something is wrong. The minute Kanye West made a comment about a white female singer, and a video with white women hanging, they (white women) were allover that. Heck, Eminem got banned in Canada because white women weren't having their esteem trashed for dollars. So YES Vanessa Staten is well aware of the harm of what Too Short said, and she's well aware of the harm that she intentionally promoted by running the story - she just doesn't care.
