This in from one of my co-panelists at BlogHer, Naomi. If you are in the New York area, Naomi is hosting a screening, tomorrow, Wednesday September 16th at the idealist.org offices, suggested donation is $10.:
See what these women did on their own? Stop waiting to be rescued. You better rescue yourself because no one else is going to do it for you. I am just in awe that little girls have to be taught that they have the right to say no and run away.
Making Waves, Saving Lives tells the story of Dolphin Anti-Rape, an organization that teaches Kenyan women and girls rape awareness and self-defense. With no government funding, a 1985 Toyota that’s constantly in the shop, and unreliable public transportation, four dedicated volunteers find a way to overcome adversity to get into the classrooms of Nairobi to empower young women. These girls learn that they have the right to say no to unwanted advances and they gain the courage to fight back and run away. Ten years since the founding of Dolphin Anti-Rape, its volunteers are affecting not only students but also a whole generation of young Kenyans – giving them confidence, filling them with empowerment, and helping them preserve their innocence.Witness how the dedicated volunteers of Dolphin Anti-Rape enable young women to walk the streets of Nairobi with pride instead of fear.

Wow! Is anybody out therrrrreeeeee. This comment board is so quiet if this was a real conversation, I'd get an echo. Hmmm, maybe if you said Kanye West was going to be at the forum, there would be more activity.
Sorry, I know there are posters way more dedicated to replying. I just wanted to make light of being the first to post on a serious subject.
To be honest, these four women have put me to shame. Instead of hiding behind the computer, perhaps I could get more involved. The problem is how to get involved without burning myself out for a cause or individuals who do not want help? After serving in Americorps as a teacher for a low income middle school, I got burnt and burned out.
Any suggestions on how to know when your actions are pointed in the right direction?
Damn. If it was any other day... can't go today. Hopefully it will be shown elsewhere at a later date?
And off-topic: Any recent updates on Dunbar Village? Updates seem to have stopped 2 weeks ago.
I'm constantly impressed with what everyday people do...and seldom impressed with solutions that come out of the government and even "BIG" community organizations these days.
