Poindexter verdicts: 8 guilty, 5 not

C.B. Hanif for WAOD:

3:10 p.m.

A deputy announced that Jury #1 has reached a verdict in the case of Tommy Poindexter on 14 counts in the savage rape and assault on a Haitian mother and her son at West Palm Beach's Dunbar Village housing development two years ago.

The trial audience quickly went from this... The audience for the verdict quickly swelled from this...

As word spreads around the courthouse, Courtroom 11H quickly fills. Extra Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputies trickle in, 14 or more, seven bracketing the defendant's table.

...to this. ...to this.

Guilty. Guilty. Guilty....(train drowns clerk's voice)...mix of guilty and not guiltys 8-5.

The verdict form. The verdict form.

And jury is thanked and dismissed.

Poindexter is consoled by Public Defender Carey Haughwout as judge sets sentencing for October 23 at 2:30 p.m.

He is led away to await it, to a male voice's "I love you bro."

I am hoping for the best and cautiously optimistic that justice will be done.

August 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBLKSeaGoat

9 counts... Thank you Lord...

9 counts hopefully means a nice long sentence. Dying in prison ain't so bad. Free room and board, food, weights, entertainment, sex (hopefully by forcible rape).

The system WORKS!

Nine counts of guilty out of what, 13 or 14?

Works for me! DAMN! :( :( :(

On Counts 1-9 I saw guilty as it was being tweeted...

Yes! I've been following this and the Dorothy Dixon case where on this site, and you're all doing a great job!

It is a sad commentary on society when we hope for other prisoners to bring a sadistic justice. It is a good day so far for justice for the victims but a tragedy all around.

10-13 were not guilty

August 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBLKSeaGoat

Perhaps a little more time behind bars will produce some more names or others will now feel free to come forward.

According to the Palm Beach Post it is 9=Guilty, 4=Not Guilty. I guess they didn't have enough to find him guilty of forced incest.

This was a compromise verdict. In other states this BS defense would not fly. Once you enter into a criminal enterprise with others, you're responsible for everything everyone else does.

As long as he dies in jail. I can live with the compromise.

I wonder where Concerned is lurking... *giggles*

August 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBLKSeaGoat

hummm-mm, now just where are "concerned" and lil miz vanessa lee?

PBP is now issuing correction on the guilty vs. not guilty counts. It is 8/5 as stated.

Yess!!!! One monster gone!!

"It is a sad commentary on society when we hope for other prisoners to bring a sadistic justice"

It is a sad commentary on society when six rapists are free and being hidden by a community that blames the victim of a horrendous crime.

I unashamedly hope that Poindexer gets himself a nice boyfriend to help "rehabilitate" him during his stay in the clink....

I've been a recent lurker but not a commenter. Thank you for your service towards the black community by reporting what others pretend does NOT exist. Ironically. Al Sharpton will be in my town to speak at a arts series. I'm mulling whether I should ask why has he been silent on this issue. That is about 1 month away. Thank you for refusing to be silent!

August 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

@ Andrea, you have every right and even a responsibility to ask whatever, make whatever comment you wish. As a matter of fact, I'd suggest you do like I did two years ago. Go to the National Action Network and see who is chair of "women's affairs." Then ask whatever the entity is called, what do they do about violence against women and girls, i.e., internal and community education around the Violence Against Women Act; ask him does he consider violence against women a hate crime. If he says no or starts snoring on the answer, then ask him why, etc.,

I would go on, but I better stop before I type a curse word . . . . . :)

I apologize, I meant NAN website. I'm very sorry. :(

@BLKSeaGoat

"Concerned" is probably at home shaking her head at the injustice of it all...wondering how that woman and her son could put these poor boys in this position.

@ RevMamaAfrika

I think you're right. I think I should do that, too.

August 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterYme

Mr. Hanif, who decides the sentences: the judge or the jury? I hope that the NAACP and other "activists" don't come out of the woodwork trying to preach for light sentences and file appeals.

August 28, 2009 | Unregistered Commentertryin2understanurside

@ tryin2understanurside

I didn't even think about that. You're right!
