The Girl Singing in the FAME Trailer CAN'T Be Naturi Naughton

The Blogmother
Since I have a bunch of experts in Black hollywood-ology, tell me who this girl is singing on this trailer for the Movie "Fame" coming out in September.
FAME - Teaser Trailer #1
I saw the trailer when I went to see Disney's "Up" ( An excellent movie, made me cry, but I don't know that I'd take small children to it). I am a show tunes fan, and when I heard her voice during the trailers, I was like " who is that singing?" So I go to the FAME site and they say that this is Naturi Naughton of 3LW and "Notorious" infamy.
I refuse to believe that this is the same person because if this is her voice( she could be lip synching) then the music industry did an amazing job of burying her voice behind a bunch of garbage. Oh how I wish we would move beyond the vocobox, banging beats ,"speaking lyrics" and get back to people who can SING! Bring back the ballad.
Do you know how hard you have to work to BURY talent? I mean To give Adrienne Bailon and Kiely Williams of 3LW leads with a voice like this in a group?? This can't be Naturi. I refuse to believe it. This is the girl who had a plate of KFC thrown at her by Kiely? No wonder she left.
So what's the scoop, whose voice is this on this trailer? I'm not going to the movie, but I'll download the single on I-tunes.
Frog Princess Trailer
I also saw the trailer to Disney's the Frog Princess, not impressed. Disney actually is taking pride in hearkening back to their 3 Black Crows in Dumbo days. They are marketing it as an homage to the good old days. I got to hear the comments in the audience about the movie "A Black princess!" and "Politically correct" bubbled up. I was the only Black person in a packed theater, but I did get to ask Mr. "Politically Correct" in the middle of the movie "Are y'all going to talk the entire movie?" while he and his date babbled through the entire film asking questions. I was thanked by those nearby for shushing them. Yes, I am a movie shusher... even in cartoons.
Actually I don't shush, I ask questions like ("How long exactly do you plan to keep talking during this movie?") Especially when the kids are quiet and two grown people are talking as if we needed play by play. You can talk in the movies all you want to... at the .99 Theater. But I paid $9 to hear what Pixar's characters had to say.
There was also this wonderful trailer before "Up" that featured clouds, babies, and storks. I won't tell you about it, but it was adorable.

Actually when Naturi was in 3LW she was the lead singer. After she got kicked out of the the group I never heard a song on the radio from 3LW again, and I guess they ended up being back up singers for Raven on Disney. I swear they had to be too old for that job.
Naturi got kicked out of the group supposedly because she wasn't pretty enough.
Sister, now you know all the real S-I-N-G-E-R-S, even young ones, are in the church. :) :)
I can believe it is Naturi...I thought she had an amazing voice the first time I heard her sing on 3LW's "Playas Gon' Play"...albeit it was a very corny song...but then almost immediately after that she was gone from the group and disappeared until she popped in one of those tobacco commercials about 2 years ago...I guess she decided to fight to let her talent shine...GOOD FOR HER!
Naima
I'd heard that they thought she was too dark, and they wanted someone a little more racially ambiguous. This was a long time ago so my memory may be a little off about it.
I was pretty surprised when she came back on the scene and heard she had been doing some broadway stuff. I figured then she must be more talented than what we'd heard through 3LW. Getting kicked out of 3LW was probably the best thing that could have happened to her. I didn't see Notorious, but I've heard good things about her in the movie. Congratulations to her for avoiding the Disney machine. She is certainly being taken more seriously than Adrian, who can now be seen on E with the Kardashian clan, and Kiely who I haven't seen since Cheetah Girls.
oh that was a short film played before UP called "Partly Cloudy" not a trailer. Pixar always plays a short film before their movies in theaters at least (also making it available on the DVD for the movie) and it is generally awesome...and "Partly Cloudy" was no exception being too cute for words and all.
I believe lil kim didn't want her(N. Naughton) to play her role in "Notorious". I thought she did a good job. But Kim, much like 3LW wanted a lighter skinned girl to play her role. Also, I read somewhere that Adrienne and Kiely were hottail girls hopping in and out of beds with rappers, r&b singers and NBA players, and Naturi wasn't going there!!!!
I caught UP this weekend too. What a great movie. I was rolling on the floor at parts and fighting tears at others.
But yup, that is definitley Miss Naturi singing. My daughter was a preteen when 3LW came out so I bought her the CD, which she played CONSTANTLY. I remember being impressed with Naturi's pipes and was really happy to see her coming back on the scene.
I hope she gets with the program and realizes she could be the next Whitney instead of Beyonce and Britney. Differentiate yourself. Her music on her myspace page doesn't show off her pipes.
She ought to do an acoustic album.
That is definitely Naturi's voice. Keep in mind that when you are doing a "pop" vocal they may require that you not sound so "soulful" aka ethnic. I learned this the hard way...
I have no idea who 3LW is (or was), but that young lady has an awesome voice. I also hope she avoids the Double B Trap.
I saw Up this weekend with my daughters and too thought it was wonderful.
As for the Frog trailer, I didn't take the "Classics" reference as a nod to the crows in Dumbo, but more to its Broadway musical/2D animated style, as opposed to the 3D/non-musical style that Disney has been doing for the last 10-15 years.
I hear the score and song choices for the film are wonderful and am SO excited to see it! The animation looks great!
My question is why do a remake of "Fame?" The original was fantastic. I love it, it's what NYC was really like in the 1970's. In fact I remember when they filmed that famous scene in Times Square, it was a hot day and they held up traffic for hours.
A year ago I had a debate with someone on a message board about Disney's lack of black characters. I asked why Disney had had Native American, Asian, Middle Eastern, European, etc. princesses but had not once sought to portray black characters. The person responded with an argument along the lines of, "Black people couldn't handle a Disney portrayal of themselves." I got all huffy and puffy and took offense and shot the person down.
I really have to find that individual on the interwebs somewhere and apologize.
First the name "Maddie" is an offensive "slave name." So Disney changes it. Then the title "The Frog Princess" is offensive...why the BLACK princess gotta be the FROG princess?!? Nevermind that the story reimagines the tale of the "Frog Prince," where a kiss turns her into a frog rather than him into a princess. Disney went ahead and changed that, too. Then people are mad that the prince isn't black. Now the reference to this being a return to classic Disney films (Melissa, you hit the nail on the head) is nostalgia for films made in the Jim Crow era.
Everybody is entitled to their opinion. But personally, I wouldn't be mad if Disney stopped running the Proud Family and refused to ever again touch black folks with a ten foot pole.
Why did we need a remake of the movie classic FAME?
