American Violet Plays on 61 Movie Screens Earns 257,000

Okay so I was curious about the box office take for "American Violet" it barely broke $250,000 but here is the clincher, it only played on 61 screens. WTH?

I read earlier last week that this film was only going to be shown in select theaters across the country. Really what that means is that it was highly unlikely that this film would be shown in a theater near year. From what I read, “American Violet” would be shown in select theaters in California, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Washington, D.C. What happened to the rest of the country?

When I saw the previews I was excited about seeing the movie...then when I looked for my local listings, it was no where to be found. I am in Tennessee wish the movie would play here.

I think it's pretty common to only do a limited release of 'small films.'

This film did really well this weekend. A per screen average of about $4,000! It had a higher per screen average than "Hannah Montana", "Monsters vs Aliens" and "Fast & Furious" this weekend. Granted, they are all in their second or third week of release but this is still great!

For a film that had literally no money for marketing and promo and only so-so reviews, it is doing really well. I think internet ads helped a lot. I doubt they will open it in more theaters but it will definitely be on DVD sooner rather than later.

There is another really good small film called "Sin Nombre" which won awards at Sundance and is very popular in the indie circuit. That film is only playing on 80 screens and has grossed a little over $1 million since it opened in March. Hopefully "American Violet" will continue to find audiences like "Sin Nombre" has.

So please go out and support the film if it is in a town near you and if not, get it as soon as it comes out on DVD!!

Why can't people who really want to see it in their areas contact the team about arranging for a screening? If they know there's interest I'm sure certain could be worked out. They could only choose certain major areas for maximum saturation. I'm going to go hunt for some contact info but if anyone has it post it and start making some calls or sending emails!!

Didnt realize this film was getting such limited release, I saw it Friday. Very good film and story, this young actress Nicole Beharie is tour de force, I was fascinated as a child of two immigrant parents she captured southern nuciances so well.

Continue to drum of support for this important film!

Faith,

Here is the info I have on the film. To arrange a screening you would need to contact the distributor:

Samuel Goldwyn Films
9570 W. Pico Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90035
Phn: 310-860-3100
Fax: 310-860-3195
http://www.samuelgoldwynfilms.com
info@samuelgoldwyn.com

If that doesn't work you can try the film's sales rep:

Sales Representatives
Cinema Management Group
9056 Santa Monica Blvd.
Suite 204
West Hollywood, CA 90066
USA
Phn: 310-300-9959
Fax: 310-300-9960

The director, Tim Disney has his own production company as well called Uncommon Productions. They may be able to give some info on how to get a screening in your area:

Phone: 781-647-4470
Fax: 781-647-4484

info@uncommonproductions.com

Good luck!

This is standard practice for small Indie films.

It had a decent per screen average. If it continues to do well they will open it on more screens.

If it garners critical and award attention it will be released wide.

That's how theses things work. Slum Dog, No Country for Old Men, Brokeback Mountain and many other big Oscar films were in limited release, gained traction and then were released wide.

April 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJJ

JJ you are correct. "Brokeback Mountain" was only shown in only TWO theaters, in New York City the first week it came out.

And yay, it is playing at the Magic Johnson theater in Harlem.

Wow. I was in Wash DC this weekend, and saw Sin Nombre. It is a good film. I'm still replaying it in my head. It didn't come across like a big budget farce: it had a very realistic feel to it.

I have to see American Violet before it disappears from the theaters.

I most definitely had rather seen this movie than any of the crap that came out this past weekend. Unforunately, it wasn't playing in my area.

@Faith

I think everyone who wants to see "Violet" should also contact owners of local theaters. This will convince the studio of growing demand for the film and thus an increase the number of screens showing the film.

A great example of this successful strategy is Fireproof, which was 2008's most popular indy film despite the following "handicaps":

*No Hollywood megastars

*No coverage by the mainstream media

*No profanity, graphic violence, or sex, i.e., family friendly

*Respect and praise for marriage

*An unapolegetically evangelical Christian worldview

Yet, this church-sponsered film costing $0.5 million went on to make over $33 million in the USA alone.
Just shows what happens when you put your faith in Christ, who can bless you with radical solutions to life's obstacles.

So, contacting the right people to increase Violet's exposure is a smart move. Also, I would pray for the movie's success if that is God's will.

YAY! I was one of the contributors to the $200K opening of American Violet. It was a really, really good film and I will be on the look out for Ms. Beharie in the future. I would definitely encourage those folks that can to put some pressure on their local theatres to carry this film.

April 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSassyJ

yeah they definitely were NOT showing it in my area ( i miss the east coast)

so i have to eagerly await the dvd..
