YouTube Facebook Murder: Black Woman Slaughtered by Crazed Fellow YouTuber and Facebook Stalker-Detroit Police Ignored Warnings by YouTubers

That video below is of Asia McGowan. I don't know how long the video is going to be up because Asia is dead. She was shot at point blank range with a shotgun by another YouTube user. I don't know that the police will find a connection, but her final message on YouTube was addressed to people leaving nasty comments on her page. She references people calling her a b*tch and saying she was "stuck up."

She was slaughtered by a Youtube poster who left numerous rants against women and other groups.Hat Tip to Black Girls Rock IT.
Anthony Powell, the man Dearborn police believe killed 20-year-old student Asia McGowan in a college classroom Friday before killing himself, posted hateful videos on the Web site YouTube in which he railed against black women and people who believe in the theory of evolution.

Powell's grief-stricken parents -- a retired Detroit Police officer and a registered nurse -- said Sunday their 28-year-old son had a history of mental illness. Sam and Doris Powell said they tried for years to get help for their son's clinical depression and other problems but never suspected he would hurt another person.

"If my child was going to kill himself, I would prefer he do himself, and not anybody else who was innocent," Doris Powell said.

"We are sorry for the death of (Asia McGowan)," Sam Powell said. "That's from the bottom of our hearts."

So disturbing were some of Powell's YouTube videos that another man with a YouTube site reported him to Detroit Police and got an e-mail back April 2 from someone in the office of Chief James Barren, according to a video posted on YouTube.

"On behalf of the chief, I would like to thank you for contacting us," said a message received by "Infamoustrag" on YouTube.

"I was unable to view the video. According to the site, I have to have a sign in.

"Do you recall exactly the content of the video? If it is too graphic, or you need to talk to me directly you may contact me at (phone number and officer's name blacked out)."

A spokeswoman could not confirm Sunday whether Detroit Police had been contacted about Powell.

Check Out This Headline From Amber Hunt of the Detroit Free Press- "Alleged shooter spread hatred, rants about atheists in online videos" Notice how she completely bumps athiests in front of Black women... in the city of Detroit.

Facebook Stalker

Looks like there is a connection between her video complaining of haters and her murder. According to comments on the YouTube page ( take it with a grain of salt) he also stalked her on Facebook) Apparently, this individual also stalked Asia on Facebook:
he was on both... he was her facebook "friend", and her classmate

he had another account detroitman313ishere and frequently commented on her videos... her "asia's youtube haters" one, and the "asia dancing" one.

he was the first commenter on both, and had two responses from her... clearly he was obsessed with her Lennyhipp on YouTube

Some of the YouTube comments following her death are disgusting.
Turahn McGowan, Asia's father, said Sunday he was shocked by snippets of Powell's YouTube videos he saw on the television news and felt there were warning signs that could have prevented his daughter's death, particularly if police were warned about Powell. "It's like they wait until after the fact," he said.

Infamoustrag said on his site that Powell had talked about a girl he liked named Asia. But on the day of the killing, Powell deleted or made private the videos in which he talked about murder and suicide so they could no longer be seen, Infamoustrag said in the video. "I tried my best to help," Infamoustrag said in his video. "It was too late."

Don Cooper, 24 of Atlanta, a student and YouTube enthusiast who got to know Powell through the Internet, said he tried to encourage Powell to get help after Powell mentioned he had a shotgun and might do something stupid. But Cooper, who uses the YouTube handle "dc coop," said he was shocked by the action Powell ultimately took.

Powell's videos feature him sitting in his bedroom talking, and sometimes shouting, directly into a camera.

In one Powell video, titled "Black Women Don't Deserve Respect," Powell denounces black women as sexually promiscuous and says they "murder 1,500 babies a day" as a result of abortions. In another profanity-laced video, Powell attacks those who believe in evolution. Detroit News

Here is the video from infamoustrag the person who sent email to the Detroit police:

I'm not joking when I say that Youtube is the Devil. If you have ever typed the words "Black women" or "Black girl" into a YouTube search, you will see a peppering of videos that would make an antebellum slave owner proud. I guess the Klan is independent contracting out these days to Black folks. This may very well be a case of mental illness, but what's the explanation for all the other rants?

Reader Comments (66)

Can youtube do one decent thing and delete her account? Please? Cause there is not any good that can come from it now. For all the condolences comments you're going to get quite a bit that will say something completely undeserving and inappropriate and downright mean/nasty to either Asia or women or black women or AA, etc. the list can go on. Youtube, just take it down now.

Asia McGowan was abeautiful women full of energy and creativity. To have her cut down just as her life was beginning is horrible beyond words!!! This hatred and anger eats at the hearts of a lot people. In the past everyone just kept it inside. But now the Internet gives these sick folks not only a platform but a target for their hatred. The authorities need to start taking stalking seriously and do something before someone loses their life not afterwards.

OMG, She was such a beautiful girl. She reminds me of a black Tracey Ullman. This is too sad for words on some many levels. Cosigning SA her youtube account should be deleted.

April 13, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterConservativeblkwoman

That is too sad. I don't know her but she seemed like someone who could be anybody's friend. Like she could just accept people. Okay i'm speculating here. But really she seemed full of life and joy. She was having her fun of her youth. What a waste! (and how do you "try" to "get help" for a mentally ill son and fail?)

I was recently at Muslim Boshido's blog and saw the happier story about Natalie White and her YouTubes. Why did one rise and the other fall...

Infamoustrag -if it wasn't such a serious topic- has his interesting lens.

Infamoustrag says, "call me a snitch, whatever.."

Also sad that he had to have that guilt for reporting a potential (now actual) criminal.

He's really shaken and saddened.

Well, all I can say is that YouTube (and the company that owns it, Google), is now in the direct line of fire for a lawsuit. Or several lawsuits.

It's been known for pretty much forever that YouTube is lax when it comes to taking down and curbing disturbing commentary. Apparently the only way for some well-needed moderating to be effective is if China asks for it. Or maybe that's because if YouTube doesn't cater to China's wishes, YouTube gets blocked over there.

April 13, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterxd

I don't think her page needs to be taken down. We need to see her face and know that she was indeed real. It is in our faces. No hiding from this one.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAtlantaSistah

Great post! Like many others, I am addicted to YouTube. I have to agree though that it can be a hotbed for racism. I hope that after this YouTube will reconsider the types of videos they allow users to post. They do not have to be tyrants, but I think we all can agree some videos should not be allowed on the site.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAna

My heart was heavy after reading this. I don't know the extent of whatever internet stalking this creature did of the victim. Or how much awareness she had of this creature. This reinforces several points that have come up in earlier discussions.

The ongoing pattern and practice of Black male online aggression against Black women is NOT a joke to be nervously laughed away. Male online aggression against women bloggers is a general pattern and problem. But as with any dysfunction, Blacks tend to take it to a whole other level.

Any Black woman who is going to be online for any reason (but ESPECIALLY if she is going to advocate on behalf of Black women and girls) MUST be proactive about her own safety. This means being proactive about the inevitable droves of Internet Ike Turners that will harass her.

This means being proactive about documenting the Internet Ike Turners as much as possible (documenting IP addresses, etc.).

I'll say it the blunt way: This also means being willing and proactive about bringing WHITE HEAT in the form of law enforcement (including the FBI) down on these Negroes' heads. BEFORE they wound, maim or kill somebody. As this episode illustrates, the Black people surrounding a BM perp generally WON'T respond appropriately to his bizarre, threatening behavior. They are NOT going to do anything that might actually be effective in preventing atrocities like this.

So, Black women are going to have to save their own lives by being proactive about these sorts of situations.

A single (possibly hesitantly-worded) email to the Detroit Police Department is insufficient. A threat like the one that this particular individual presented requires writing and calling ALL of the local law enforcement entities, including the local FBI office. And if law enforcement doesn't respond, a willingness to contact the local media about their lack of response.

Peace and blessings.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKhadija

@atlantasistah another thing people might not consider is that her family wants her page to stay up, they haven't gotten around to figuring out how to request taking it down.. OR they have not figured out how to save her videos for their own memories.

People have trouble giving away their loved one's clothes and personal effects, imagine what they are going through if they delete video of her laughing dancing and having fun.

Her videos are her legacy in a way. She wanted them up. Why should the fact that a crazed stalker who wasn't properly treated force her to disappear from a space where she clearly enjoyed being?

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered Commentergem2001

Atlanta Sistah Said "I don’t think her page needs to be taken down. We need to see her face and know that she was indeed real. It is in our faces. No hiding from this one."

I emphatically agree!

Removing her page will help sweep incidents like these under the rug...

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCW

And let's not forget this incident (Not meant to create a discussion...Just want the reader to keep these things in the back of their minds):

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCW

I cannot emphasize strongly enough how important it is for women to take these online stalkers seriously. I had a stalker for years who didn't leave me alone until I got law enforcement involved. I haven't been to YouTube or watched any of those anti-black women videos, (I avoid anti-black womanist people, no point in it), but it was clear that this young man was mentally ill and his delusional system was fixated on black women. I don't know how law enforcement and his family could've failed to understand that he would eventually hurt someone.

We have to be proactive and take this madness seriously. Black women have been dehumanized to the point that no one cares if we die. In the 80s it was the infamous 'welfare queen,' now we have a litany of dehumanizing monikers. We are not human, and those who are not human are fit to be exterminated. Understand this and act accordingly to save your life.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRoslyn Holcomb

I agree with CW and Atlanta. Mental health is an issue that really looked over in this community. We ignore the signs and the police helped not one bit. I'm sick and tired of law enforcement stepping in at the last minute.

About Asia's page I feel that it should stay up so it could be a reminder to all of us. Taking it down will make people forget. It should be left up because Asia wanted those videos there.

Last but not least I knew that this was gonna happen and I just know that this is going to happen on a dating site too. There needs to be more protection. Youtube is lookin at a major lawsuit.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTheVoiceOfReason

its sad that the police didnt take this seriously.

why should youtube be sued though? Youtube is great for millions of people. Sometimes u gotta take the good with the horrible.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterundressingHER

This doesn't shock me at all. I stopped going to youtube because the anti-black woman foot soldiers had taken it over by last summer. Some of those videos could have come straight from a slave auctioner's mouth. I figured something like this would happen because a lot of black women were fighting back and posting response videos. Every time they showed their faces they were putting their lives in jeopardy.

This will be spun as a "religious nut" case and not a black woman hater and murderer case. Watch.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHollywood Blackout

I am deeply saddened by the brutal killing of this lovely young black woman. Sisters, protect yourselves. Violence against black women is so real. My sister recently had to leave a job due to the constant harrassment she received from black male customers. Take heed; take care. And as another commenter said, be proactive.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKitty

Also, what the hell was this 28 year old man doing still living up under his mama?

He was "in and out" of community college for years and had no stable job?

His father didn't talk to him about the need to "leave the nest" and make a life for himself? All of this coddling and protection of black males is surreal. If he was mentally ill you certainly don't let him spend hours locked in a room on the INTERNET!! You don't just go to church and pray that he never hurts anybody. You don't leave him to the world to wreak havoc. That was THEIR child and he was THEIR responsibility. Now he has taken another child's life.

This story has my blood boiling for so many reasons. I have known black families like this where the son is damn near 30 and is still at home with no job, no education, no skills. He just soaks up all the family resources until he finds a woman whose resources he can suck. But the daughter is usually employed, in school and CONTRIBUTING to the household.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHollywood Blackout

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEbony

After reading about this story last night I went on YouTube and saw other videos posted by this monster.

How his mother could be a RN and NOT know that her son was psychotic is beyond me. How his father could be a retired P.O. and not know that his sone was a ticking time bomb is deplorable. You have to know that your son is in need of serious help when you think to yourself, "If he hurts someone, we are hoping it would just be himself."

You can hope in one hand and defecate in the other and see which one fills up first. HOPE DOESN'T mitigate SEVERE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES! It NEVER will! I am very disappointed in Powell's parents. I am grieveing for Asia's.

Regarding the comment about Grown Azz children living at home and being sponges, I HAVE SEEN EQUAL NUMBERS OF TRIFLING MEN AND WOMEN DOING THE SAME THING. Powell living at home wasn't the problem, Powell being a maniac whose family wanted to ignore his "issues" was the problem. Powell not being institutionalized by FORCE was the problem. A 20 year old woman is dead because she spurned the advances of a maniac who had too much time on his hands.

Regarding whether youtube is liable or not, I'm erring on the side of free speech. Powell had the right to say whatever he wanted to, but he also should have been ready for the consequences associated with exercising his rights. Thank God he's dead and by his own hand because someone could have felt compelled to kill him for his lunacy and that, would have been another life wasted on Powell.

R.I.P - Asia.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBLKSeaGoat

My question is how did this stalker find her classroom?
WHy didn't the police do anything? (well we know why, if it was Sue it would be different).

And the question I have to ask,
Where are the men?

If we can't protect our daughters, then we might as well throw the towel in.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDantresomi

Dantresomi, I believe they were in the same theatre class together. For whatever reason, they were alone together in the classroom that he murdered her in.

One thing I continue to be baffled by are all the black women and children being murdered because the relatives of their murderers were enablers and failed to "see" the warning signs.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEnlightened

This is completely senseless. But then there is no rhyme or reason to mental illness. The unfortunate thing is that being that Powell was 28, his family couldn't have done much to force him to get help. Had they seen the videos they might have been able to get him involuntarily committed.

From what I read, the Powell was someone that knew Asia from school and he was obsessed with her so he most likely would have attempted to do this anyway without use of YouTube and Facebook. While YouTube and Facebook were the source of the stalking, they could have saved her life if anyone had taken the threats seriously. Most times after incidents like this all the people come out of the woodwork to say "We never thought he'd do something like this," but in this case it was all over the internet. The internet is not anonymous (even when you register for a site with bogus information they know where you are). Had they complained to YouTube and Facebook they may have been able to get information on the source of the threats to identify this guy before this happened. The police definitely could have gotten this information from Google or Facebook.

I think that we as internet citizens need to be more vigilant when we see threatening or other behavior that can hurt others. The video where the guys says what he's going to do should have been on the news and police should have been at his door. Save the threatening material on your own computer and don't trust that it will still be on YouTube, Facebook, MySpace or wherever later. Local police departments are mostly clueless when it comes to the internet so if we really feel that something is going to happen we might have to bug them to death (and hold their hands to understand) to get them involved in a case. There's a lot that YouTube and Facebook can do as well but many don't know that if they are contacted by law enforcement they can be compelled to give information about particular users. But I think the most can be done with users being vigilant about threats - take them seriously and report it to the authorities (not just to the service provider) and MAKE them respond.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKenya

Having had people involuntarily committed let me just say it's an arduous task. Typically you had to have an overt act, as in, he has to physically endanger himself or others. And you can't have an overt act on Friday and file the petition on Monday. Usually the courts require that the petition be filed immediately. At least in Alabama, you had to have two psychiatrists agree that the person needed to be committed.

I've dealt with so many people who are reluctant to do this, either because of the hoops you have to jump through, or simply through reluctance to admit that a family member needs to be committed.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRoslyn Holcomb

I want to chime in on the religious angle here. As a black, female atheist you are definitely "demonized" for being atheist in America, and especially by the black community.

I suspect that would be the angle to pop up in MSM, but it's something that we need to think about too.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLaJane Galt

I know what you're saying. Typically, I am only able to get a person FD-12'D ONLY if the police officer witnesses the person engaged in some type of psychotic rage. However, when it's done, it's done. That person goes away for at least 30 days if there are no criminal charges pending.

Fortunately in DC, MD's aren't the only people who can can order an FD-12.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBLKSeaGoat

It is also very possible the parents of the murderer feared him and feared his ability to hurt them, destroy their home, etc.

Since he was living in their home, they should have PULLED all Internet access in the house. I have watched some of his videos (they were linked from local Detroit newspaper articles). The videos show a clearly ill and out of control person ranting, screaming, and raging in front of his webcam.

There was a lot of denial going on in that house about how dangerous this man really was.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterdeborah

This is so sad and horrible. I wish the police had had a clue!

I disagree that YouTube should take her video down. I can't imagine that she would want her presence as a videoblogger to be taken away. Delete the nasty comments on it, sure, but don't delete her brave proud presence.

How hard is it to get a You Tube to take down some of this anti-black woman craziness? Do they have a hate speech policy. As I said, I haven't followed up on this, and my computer is old and slow so I can't really watch videos. But it would seem to me that it might be a good idea to go proactive and ask them to take the worst offenders down. I've had blogs taken down before, and it only took a couple of e-mails.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRoslyn Holcomb

I dealt with a stalker who just could not stay away from his ex - girlfriend. He was given a year (max for a misdemeanor in VA) and convinced a court psych that after 9 months he was sorry and would not bother her. This man left the jail and went straight to his ex' home. He was locked up again immediately but given a $10,000. bond. His parents came and paid CASH for their dbr son to get out. (I counted every dollar of it).

So yes, Powell's parents knew their son was troubled but would have most likely been there to bail him out or try to otherwise mitigate any mental hearing evidence against him. Who knows if they over indulged him as a child or didn't discipline him or if they did the best they could and he turned out bad anyway? I think after the victims' family is done suing the DPD and (maybe the school) for untold millions (that will be settled out of court) that some procedures will change. This may make YouTube honor their policy not to allow hate speech through their medium. I have not seen too much in the way of stopping these black women haters.

April 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLorraine

@lorraine wait, YouTube has a "hate speech" policy?

The easiest way to get YouTube aka GOOGLE to take something down is to have advertisers take your request to them directly.

Google has made huge companies like Ning take down all their "adult oriented" content to participate in adsense, I don't see why they wouldn't impose a similar policy on their own company.

Unless and until folks start hammering Google with negative press over the anti-black woman hate speech on YouTube, they won't do a thing.

Weird how quickly that massacre at Virginia Tech has been forgotten by the media. They swept that under the rug pretty quickly. I guess because the VTech guy was institutionalized, and they still let him out knowing he was dangerous.

The mentally ill are a group that no one wants or seems able to properly "manage" in this country. This is a gross and chronic failure of the medical industry.

I grew up in NYC, where they roam the streets, accost, and have killed people. They used to be the majority of the homeless. They used to be in state institutions, but Ronny Raygun felt it was cheaper to let them out.

Today a person cannot be instituted unless they agree to it. It's true for NYC and NJ.

Rule of thumb: if someone is making threats, it needs to be taken seriously. Nut jobs often make good on their plans for murder. Apparently, they are also compelled to tell someone.

I think I would have to place a great deal of the blame on his parents - at least his father. As a father, I would not allow my 28 year-old son to have the kind of privacy in my home that would allow him to spend this much time on the 'net. Neither would I a mentally ill son harbor weapons. If he was mentally ill he would not have anything in my home unless a psychiatrist approved it. But, that's JustMe.

First let me say that Youtube is NOT the devil...it's just some of the people using YT have the devil in them. There's a lot of good stuff out there...even for black women...but of course, as with any other medium if you go LOOKING for wrong you're going to find it. And not for nothing, you can't put statements like that out there, but at the same time link to YT videos or better yet embed them on your blog...apparently it has it's uses..when you need it.

Hate..not of just Black women, but of all races, nationalities and of both genders, is out there! If not on YT...then on other websites, in bookstores and libraries, etc. etc. Personally, I could sit on YT all day and not come across a "hatred" video...unless I SEARCH for one...get it? YT does not PROMOTE or CREATE the hatred it simply REINFORCES it! The propaganda is still out there, whether on YT or not...YT just makes it more convenient and easily accessible...which is my main issue with YT. I don't care about the grown azz consenting adult who's going to find the smut they're looking for if their minds are predisposed to such BS... but just for our impressionable children. Even for content that YT requires that you log in to view and confirm that you're over 18...that process is too easy to circumvent. If anything people s/b required to input credit card info to confirm their age before access is granted.

Furthermore, what truly disturbs me about the entire post if it is in fact true...is that the nut job was made a "friend" by the victim on Facebook and Myspace and was thus able to view her content and even comment on her pages. This access likely reinforced his obsession with her and ultimately made her his victim. I'm sure that based on their different personalities, he got a lot more "access" to her online than she EVER gave him in real life...probably making him feel that he knew her a lot better than he actually did. This disturbs me because as a f/b user myself I see my younger family members, mainly the females, having 3, 4, 5 hundred "friends" on their pages...they don't discriminate on who they allow to access their pages...in fact it's just the opposite for them...for many the game is acquiring as many "friends" as possible. As a matter of fact, when young adults meet knowadays they no longer exchange phone #'s they exchange f/b's! I know this for a fact! My niece was disturbed when a guy she recently met would not friend her on f/b...so she figured he was hiding a "in a relationship" status.

She was a beautiful young lady and full of energy. She reminds me of a young Jada Pickett. I know she was going places in life, and its sad that now she won't have that opportunity. My heart goes out to her family and those that loved her.
