UPDATE:Surely Ciroc Vodka Isn't This Stupid: "Requirements: White, hispanic or light skinned african american"

I'm not a dranker, so its hard to boycott something I don't use in the first place. In addition to foolishly lining the pockets of Shawn "Johnny Appleseed" Combs by selecting him as the spokesperson for Ciroc Vodka, Sandra Rose posted what purports to be  open audition call for promo models to hand out Ciroc Vodka:
Ciroc Promotion Ciroc promo is this Friday, March 27, 2009
    Time: 3:00pm - 7:00pm and 12:00am - 3:00am

    Requirements:

Race: White, hispanic or light skinned african american
Height: At least 5′6 or taller
    Size 7 or smaller.

This is a cash @ wrap job and the booking will be thru our partner. Please submit asap.Talent will only be contacted if the client is interested in booking you!!!

Compensation: $35.00 per hour Sandra Rose.com

A quick google search reveals that at some point, this was also posted on Craig's List Atlanta, however, the post has been removed - I don't know if it was by Craig's List or the poster.

Surely- SURELY no one could be so stupid as to post this on along side they're client's name in a public forum.... or could they? And a strongly worded denial from Ciroc or the person responsible for they're Atlanta promotions should be released in 5...4..3..2..1.

UPDATE: Ciroc sent Sandra Rose a Statement of Denial. That was fast!
“CIROC Vodka has nothing whatsoever to do with this inappropriate and offensive casting call, which was done without the brand’s knowledge or consent. We are currently investigating how this occurred. CIROC Vodka has created a brand that defines sophisticated celebration for all consumers, and in no way condones this practice.”

I drink but I don't drink Ciroc, but considering the source of this story Sandra Rose, I will take it with a grain of salt, but obviously there are colorism issues in the media.

I saw this yesterday on ybf. Hey, if u live in the ATL and are a model dark or light or whatever, I say get some protest signs, call the media and make a statment. I like how Ciroc wants to market to black people by using Sean Combs, but only wants light complected black women in their commercials?? I don't drink and don't really care about Mr. Combs, but I am dark complected and am pissed that a company would even put out a casting call excluding beautiful dark brown women.. We can make it into the white house but can't be in a Ciroc add...Darn shame..

I wouldn't put it past Diddy, but since this came via Sandra Rose, I'll reserve judgement until I see it from a more reputable source.

I need no further confirmation as to whether this was genuinely from Sean Combs. I feel the proof is out there when it comes to all of his ads with women in them (his fashion line for women, his perfume/cologne ads, etc.). I don't plan on doing any business with any individuals, companies, or organizations affiliated with him in any way. I encourage all who have common sense to not compartmentalize the business moves of Sean Combs, and see him for who he is. Do not support such a character.

I wonder what would happen if Zoe Saldana or Lauren Velez showed. They are Latinas, but I don't think they're who these people had in mind.

March 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMonica

Funny they changed their ad not only that, but it does not change a thing even if a darker girl was to show up they wouldn't pick her.

March 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTheVoiceOfReason

*sigh*

If this is true.

*sigh*

If true and people actually applied and considered this the right job for them despite the market.

Well, I understand how exclusionary it sure looks. And that can really hurt feelings, that’s for sure. But can I take just a slightly different perspective here (without getting the ‘internet flame-job’, because I might not totally agree)?
When it comes to such grey areas of personal choice, what’s beautiful to you, even the situation of a company marketing to a very specific group, this all gets so tangled. I’ll use a little hyperbole to explain. It wouldn’t make much sense for me to get mad about the fact I’ll never be on the cover of Essence magazine (or Jet or Ebony. Even KING; lol on THAT one, I’m not sure such trash is even a “publication”, lol). I’m sure if Flori Roberts wanted some male models I’m not going to be their pick, I wouldn’t represent the intended customer base preferences. And ya know, that’s fine with me. I understand where those businesses are aiming.
As far as what’s “beautiful”, I can tell you the truth here, I can expect about a 95% failure rate in trying to ask a black female out (darker ones only. Sorry “light-skinned” girls, lol). Maybe they think whiteboys are ugly. OK. Fine. Isn’t that their choice to make? I’d be pretty stupid to demonize. It’s also my choice to think very dark girls are utterly beautiful, society be damned.
When companies go to advertize to specific population groups, aren’t they rather forced to adhere somewhat to that groups perceptions about things? It’d be like the ridiculousness of me being the “face” of advertizing for “Soul Glo” (remember the movie girls, please), it doesn’t fit.
That’s it.
Hey, Thanks for reading this! Really.

March 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterUh Me-I Guess

still waiting for someone to explain why dark-skinned women aren't beautiful or acceptable...
this shit BAFFLES me

Well the company is just taking cues from a majority of black men who've made their prejudices quite obvious: no dark women welcome. Look at the average music video. Read the statements of idiots from Young Berg (no dark butts) to Neo who actually has an interview on youtube where he plainly states his "preference" for white skin. Why would anyone be surprised? The question that should be asked is why do so many of us either silently stand by (not the case here though) or actively support it? I mean haven't we all heard the expression "good hair"? White people didn't coin that term.

March 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFaith

Hasn't that message been blasted at us for as long as we can remember? Male and dark is masculine, light and female is attractive or feminine. Fashion magazines (even Essence) appear unable to even use proper lighting on dark brown models. Aren't most, if not all, of the women hosts on BET non-black, or light complexioned?

Disney puts a light-skinned guy next to a lovely dark princess, and it creates hand wringing and much drama amongst the usual suspects. I doubt there would be any reaction if she were very very light, and he was on the burnt and crispy side.

As for the truth of this plantation ad: there was a Detroit DJ with a circular requesting only light colored women appear for his party. Also, there was one (from the UK?) requesting black guys only bring a white woman.

To think if black women had social groups, or ability to push media propaganda, as obnoxious and color struck as these guys there would be hell to pay. Double standards are so fascinating.

March 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGoldenah

Hopefully no black women will even try to model for this fool. I'm not even dark-skinned and I'm offended.

I personally think that in order to stop this hueism in the BC, we would have to literally rotate different hues of black women in magazines. One page with a light girl, one page with a dark girl, and one page with a medium girl and so on.

Times like this where I am glad I don't drink liquor anymore. I don't have this problem with wine lol

March 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSeattle Slim

If they are so outraged and they do not condone such practices, then I am looking forward to seeing some dark-skinned sistas in their next advertisements.

"I wonder what would happen if Zoe Saldana or Lauren Velez showed. They are Latinas, but I don’t think they’re who these people had in mind"

They are not just Latinas...they are also women of African descent.

March 27, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterwanda

I will never support p-creature or any of his endeavours.

March 27, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermekare

this is exactly how untrue rumors start! it's pretty obvious to me that this story comes from a less than reputable source and based on ciroc's statement seems like it is misleading at best and completely fake at worst. and you're right, ciroc and diddy are NOT that stupid - cause they didn't do anything inappropriate.

March 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKiara

And people have a nerve to complain about the new Disney Movie having a white prince?

March 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLorMarie

The actions of Sean and other performers are speaking volumes and we've been ignoring their blatant messages for the past 15 years. There is no way that you can deny a FACT that one see’s on a daily basis. The media has been doing this for decades and we still support the majority of their corporate sponsors. It's up to us to end this exclusionary practice of our standard of beauty from the mainstream media. Whoever one desires is their preference, however when they vehemently display to me and other women who look just like me, that I am not considered as beautiful as a woman who is closer to the Euro-standard of beauty, then I do not support you. And ladies you need to forget about the beat and make a conscious effort to withhold your hard earned money. Women have made these men quite wealthy and have received nothing in return. When are women going to use your true power as consumers and start talking with your dollars? You do not do business nor support anyone who does not RESPECT you! Once we start this practice we will have the power to change how this country treats us, if not we'll continue to throw dollars at undeserving people and services. We are the most disrespected women on the planet and it's time that we stand in unity to control our imagery!

March 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterYvonne C.

I'm so glad Michelle is dark-skinned. These black children need to see that.

March 27, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMod 2

Not only is this fake, but I've seen plenty of other Ciroc ads with beautiful dark-skinned women in them. I think they've done a good job having diversity in their ads, actually. Did y'all see the link Puff posted on his Twitter? You can see all the ads here:

I don't trust Sandra Rose, but why do I get the feeling this is true.

March 28, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterrikyrah

@Jen
1. That's Kim Porter, Diddy's baby mama. Maybe if he hired her for a gig, he wouldn't have to pay so much in child support.

2. Even if the Craiglist posting is fake, if they only wanted women with light skin and Eurocentric features, they would just not hire the darker girls.

March 29, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMonica

It IS true! Speculation be damned! This is the mess that DEFINES the disgusting soul-destroying sewer the Black "Community" and especially Black hollywood is for Black females! And another thing, I really could not care less about any White or Latina heffas, but it really boils me to see them trying to pit us darker and lighter sistas against each other!

Kiara, I like your idea.

April 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFed up observer.

Wanda, you think Lauren Velez considers herself to be of "African descent"?

LMAO!

She looks just like one of those trifling Latinas strutting around the hood thinking she is above ANY sista, looking down her nose at us while flirting with the Black men.

Lets just stick to advocating for/defending REAL sistas please. You know, AFRICAN-AMERICAN, AFRICAN, and WEST INDIAN women please.

April 11, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFed up observer.

"SURELY no one could be so stupid as to post this on along side they’re client’s name"

Hell, if people are stupid enough not to know the difference between "their" and "they're"... (And, no, dyslexia is no excuse, since it does not manifest that way).
