Foolishness and Chicanery: Who Referred to First Lady Michelle Obama As "Trash" and "Fake"?
Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at 1:29AM The Blogmother For those of you who do not read Michelle Obama Watch, You might have missed this tidbit from Tammy Bruce speaking about First Lady Michelle Obama:
BRUCE: What a shame. That must’ve just ruined her damn day. “I wanted the A for myself, and I wanted to do it, and ooh, they said you sounded like a white person, I don’t know what that means, but uhh.” Huh?
Man, oh, man. That’s who he’s married to, what does that tell you? This is what we’ve got — you know what we’ve got? We’ve got trash in the White House. Trash is a, is a thing that is color blind, it can cross all eco — ecosocionomic kind of categories, you can work on Wall Street or work at the Wal-Mart. Trash are people who use other people to get things, who patronize others, who consider you bitter and clingy.Courtesy of Media Matters

Michelle Obama is a lady of class and dignity. Such comments don't appear to even phase her. With that said, the work you are doing at Michelle Obama watch is very important. This dignified woman is doing something that all efforts at frank dialogue about race have not been able to do in that some people are finally showing and expressing their true feelings about race - and about black women in particular.
Let the Haters Hate, because that's what Haters do. The First Lady will not even dignify it with a response.
And these are the same people who are attacking Eric Holder for saying some whites are cowards about discussing race. Some white people haven't a clue about what goes on in the black community, then when they hear about it they become "outraged" and call it racism. Black kids in certain schools and neighborhoods get told they are acting white, etc. all the time, and Tammy Bruce is scandalized and thinks it is racist that Michelle Obama related her actual school experience to help these schoolkids who might be going through the very same thing. But Tammy Bruce and her ilk don't want to hear this discussed - it's as if it scares them. And given that Ms. Bruce belongs to a group of women who get judged and called names constantly, I would think she would be more careful about name-calling.
What the fuck, are we in the Twilight Zone or something?
Correct me if this is wrong, but she seems to be the most vilified First Lady in history. WHY?

I have to choose my words very carefully.
When individuals talk about themselves and their road to success they often are (or sound) extremely smug. It doesn't matter if it's Donald Trump or First Lady Obama. Being self-congratulatory isn't trashy. It's annoying and off-putting.
Something else is at play with Bruce's reaction.
@monica oh believe you me, I KNOW. I KNOW. however, we were not her target audience. Her target audience was a group of young Black ppl in a hardscrabble section of DC.
She wasn't talking about her sucess to pat herself on the back. She was talking about her sucess to demonstrate to them that that same sucess was possible for them. Yes, there are people who think that becoming a lawyer is luck or a fluke something out of their reach. It ain't rocket science. That was what she was attempting to do.
Methinks it will be very interesting to see the reactions of such individuals once First Lady Obama really gets comfortable with her position during President Obama's second term.
Not sure how you feel about the Economist magazine. (they can be snobby) but they were defending Michelle Obama.

Who the hell does this women think she is I mean what is she getting at? How is she trash she is telling the kids something about her past and is probably relating to them so what the hell is this woman Tammy talking crap for? God damn Michelle Obama has a whole lot more class than this Tammy woman

Tammy Bruce is out of her mind. How is Michelle "trashy" for sharing this story? Any black person on the planet, and I would think many whites, know exactly what Michelle is talking about. She's simply referring to the unfair stigma placed upon many African Americans from low income environments, by their peers, because others like Michelle aspire to more than what they see around them. Tammy, the so called "femenist" needs to get out of her bubble and educate herself on these issues.
Tammy Bruce is no more a feminist than I am a guy. And she's stupid. Michelle Obama is the classiest, most intelligent, most inspiring, most original First Lady we've had since Jackie O. The garden? The way she went around and introduced herself at all the agencies? She's an amazing lady, and I'm so glad and proud she's our First Lady. I hope all the little girls in America are taking notes, because she's the best example for them.
