My First Syndicated Radio Segment:Sometimes You Just have to Leap

The Blogmother
I've produced a podcast, I've been on nationally syndicated radio shows as a guest, I've even been paid to appear on international radio, but I think this is about as excited as I've been in a really long time. Nathalie Thandiwe approached me to do a regular segment on her show, Woman, Body and Soul on WBAI in New York. On Decemeber 3 and high noon, my first segment aired! Whippee! I explained why I was participating in National Novel Writing Month. I had been mulling returning to the airwaves ever since I shut down the WAOD podcast, the Black Women's Roundtable, but I wanted to do it on my own terms and a syndicated radio segment is almost perfectly suited to where I am right now in life.
I love this. I get to say whatever I want to say without being controlled by a host or fighting to be heard. I'm not responsible for the production of the entire show, just my little portion, and I get to talk about anything I want to, including some things I don't discuss on this blog and hopefully reach some folks who might not read blogs.
THIS is why you go to things like Blogging While Brown, so you can look people in the eye and get a vibe for their energy in person. When Nathalie first approached me I was in the middle of a whirlwind of chaos and I told her to get back with me in a month and she didn't give up on me.
Some lessons? First, when the podcast grew to be something I dreaded instead of enjoyed, I walked away even though we had a nice following at the time. Second, I needed to meet more people and think about what I wanted to do and how I wanted to do it. Third, I had to wait until the time was right instead of rushing around doing something. Fourth, the most important social network is human interaction. Sometimes it IS who you know. Sometimes getting to where you want to be is merely a matter of meeting the right person at the right time. In any case, I'm using this as a great learning opportunity.
This is the first expansion of WAOD in a long time.2010 we'll be headed... excuse me.. I'll be dragging all of us kicking and screaming into uncharted terrritory. We can't keep staring at the scoreboard wondering why we are always down by 20 points, we've got to get on the field of play and fight. 2010 is the year this blog community fights for its dreams and our survival. That's what this first segment was about. I explain why it is I walked away from blogging for a month to write a novel.
I remember when I stopped podcasting, I said I'd be back. Well, I'm back!

Congratulations on your new venture. I don't listen to the radio, so I'm not sure if the show is syndicated in my area. Still miss the podcast.
