"We're not delusional, but we are determined." Good News Tuesday
Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 8:43AM
The Blogmother This is supposed to be Good News Tuesday and though this story didn't turn out as we would have liked, these women were successful continuing to get attention to their fight. They also Provided one of the best quotes of the week which I shall add to my collection. Y'all know I love alliteration. This comes close."We're not delusional, but we are determined,"
International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge rejected a request to add women ski jumpers to the 2010 Olympics. ( I soooo want to go. I love Canada!) Anywhoo, he purports that this is a "technical" issue and not based on gender:
In mid-August, the women wrote to Rogge after the IOC announced that it was including women's boxing in the London 2012 Olympics. They asked him to reconsider the decision leaving female ski jumpers out.
But Rogge responded by saying the inclusion of women's boxing "highlights the fact that the IOC is working hard to reach gender parity in winter and summer Games. It also underlines that the reason why we took the decision not to include women's ski jumping was made strictly on a technical basis and absolutely not on gender grounds, and [the decision] was part of a process employed across all sports in the programme." On the bright side, women's ski jumping is being included in the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria. But here is the quote that I loved the best. The spokeswoman of the lobbying campaign knew they were facing stiff opposition, but explained why they pressed for their passion anyway.
Deborah Folka, a spokeswoman for the ski jumpers, said they knew when they wrote the letter there was little chance Rogge would change his mind.
"We're not delusional, but we are determined," she said. SOURCE

Considering that most ski jumpers are 5"9 and 105 lbs, it's easier to find that skinny people among women than men.
I wonder if they want to compete against men or have their own separate competition, because of the size disparity I can definitely see women coming to dominate ski jumping if they compete against men. Of course, our lower center of gravity might make up the difference, I don't know.
Glad you liked my quote. It came out of an interview with a journalist here in Vancouver who has been covering the story since we launched the lawsuit last year. You may also be interested in knowing that my firm and the law firm handling the women ski jumpers' case are donating our fees. Yes, we aren't making money...but we may make history. And you can quote me on that. Thanks for your interest in the women ski jumpers. All the best, Deborah
