The Blogmother
I'm not going to even bother trying to talk about anything OTHER than the inauguration of Barack Obama today :) Besides, we've got our hands full over at Michelle Obama Watch waiting on the big reveal of her ball gown. Enjoy today and marinate on this cover from The Nation. It features barack Obama and famous figures throughout history. Its pretty neat trying to pick everybody out of the illustration. iIwish they had it for purchase. The Nation has posted an answer key to help you figure out who is who.

Hi All:
It's totally insane here! People have been camped out ALL NIGHT! They haven't even opened the gates yet. I have NEVER seen so many Black people in one place. This is awesome though. I say let us have a day for cheer before the work and backlash begins!!
Good Morning Gina and WOAD family:
Since there is no podcast scheduled, I guess the open thread will have to do. LOL.
@faith that's awesome. I like being able to watch everything on TV. Michelle wore yellow.
@attorneymom YOU could have hosted a podcast. You know how! :)
I am about to lose my breakfast watching Michael Eric Dyson shuck and jive on the Today Show.
It so weird to see all these celebrities who shuck and jive for a living get all this coverage their getting. They are the opposite of what this moment stands for. They have money and opportunities and they still do stupid stuff and end up in jail. They have opportunities to make positive art but they do not. But I guess they just want another reason to party
@Gem2001, the podcast in no fun without your full participation.
I woke up earlier than expected this morning because I was so excited. Aside from having a black president, our country has been blessed with the opportunity to experience something that we have never experienced before. I refuse to hold back my tears. We have been given a new beginning, and we have earned the right to be overjoyed. To everyone who feels that we should be spending the day scheming up new ways to fix the economy and repairing world relations, calm down and be happy for the strides that our country has taken. Less than 150 years ago blacks couldn't so much as attend school, vote in elections or own property without fear of retaliation and now we have a highly educated power couple living in the most influential residence of the free world. Today I am proud of my country. We were able to look past race and simply vote for the better candidate, and that speaks volumes of our progress. Granted, we are by no means living in a post-racial era, and the negative sentiments that I've heard just today prove that to me. But today I choose to be grateful for Barack Obama. I encourage everyone, no matter where you are, to go out and celebrate. Not only for our president, but also for everyone in the above graphic who couldn't make it to this day. We do not know what the next four years will hold, but today we walk in greatness.
Rev. Lowrey (sp?) is my new favorite person. Rick Warren who?
That cover is amazing, thanks for sharing.
Well, let the celebrity obsessed culture expand to Washington. The number of "stars" CNN interviewed was nauseating, especially when many of them don't abide by the laws us regular Americans do. I agree with Naima that the shuckers and jivers have no place at an event of this magnitude. The misogynists, race hustlers, users and abusers continue to get favorable coverage which makes it even harder for those of us trying to educated other blacks and get them to see how they have been hoodwinked for decades.
But it still is a historic day and I am proud of the Obamas, especially Michelle for carrying herself with grace and dignity when so many tried to tear her down just because they accept a black woman to just be grateful.
I'm very proud to be an American. I'm trilled with the appearence of unity. I hope that the inpiration resulting will help me to continue to do better, to help others and to continue to hope that our country remains on the right track.
Hello everyone. I am so full of joy right now and so damn proud! I know that there is much to do, so much for all of us to do to improve this great country of ours. So many ills to fight against but I am inspired by our new President-President Obama to do all that I can to help. Now there is going to be a time we don't agree with him and that is when we will have to gently but forcibly steer him in the right direction. I am confident that we can gain his attention so he can take action against the violence being perpetrated against Black females and help to prevent atrocities like Dunbar Village.
To quote our President (Boy dig that President Barack Obama), "We are the change we have been waiting for."
I wish obama and his admin all the best!!
I shared this magazine cover with my parents and they began calling out by name each of the faces represented in this illustration...perused the answer key, my folks were on point...I've made a promise not to scold them on buying an I-Phone but using it like a land-line telephone!
I don't mean to be a killjoy, but I did not have a proud moment. Especially not like the cover of "The Nation." I applaud "The Nation" I will definitely get that issue.
I guess it was Kim Weston or Melba Moore not being there to sing "Lift Every Voice." Perhaps it was again no one mentioning the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. Although Senator DiFi did bring up the Dream speech and Aretha did include a line or two from the Dream speech. Rev. Joesph Lowery did his little diddy at the end of the benediction, but did he leave "when black don't have to get back" out--intentionally? I don't know.
But I tell you I really got a kick out of Malia and Sasha, the Obama young ladies are awesome! I think those girls still got a lot of Trinity in them. This moment in our history is not a surprise to me. After Iowa, I saw the post-racial mosaic developing. However, I must admonish Black folks be mindful of the sacredness of what you are giving up and the emptiness that you will receive.
God Bless America
I have always been grateful to those who have paved the way for me so that I may have a life filled with brighter days. Today, I am more inspired than ever to be a catalyst that paves the way for generations to come. My determinations to stand up against the social ills that plague our communities is greater. My sense of responsibility is deepened, and my voice for change is louder.
My bad, Rev. Lowery did say "when black don't have to get back." I am happy this Obama stuff is over now let's get on with it. I have to get back to work. I just hope people stop relying on hope, change and new days--that has been going on for quite some time. I just "hope" America can depend on me the way I depend on America.
FOUR Black females in the White House, it's official now WHOO-HOO!
LOVED Michelle's dress! She looked too cute!
Chief Justice goofed the oath! President Obama retakes the oath.
It's nice to say President Obama. I always correct people when they just call him Obama.
GO OBAMA!!!! I AM SO PROUD RIGHT NOW! :) GOD IS GOOD!!
hi, im only sixteen but seeing obama; im sorry president obama; get sworn in was amazing.
i do feel that we have a lot of expectations for him; so i hope he can fulfill atleast most of them, because so many people are waiting for him to fail.
