Round of Applause for Dede Sutton and Clutch Magazine- Ink Investment Deal With Elemental Interactive

One of the most beautiful sites for Black women online and the launching pad for the first blog network for African American women, Clutch Magazine has just inked an investment deal with Elemental Interactive:
There's life yet in online publishing ... Digital media consultancy Elemental Interactive has made a strategic investment in Clutch, an online magazine and blog network for African-American women. Elemental (a former division of WPP's Grey Global Group), will take an undisclosed stake in Atlanta-based Sutton Media, Clutch's publisher.

Founded in 2007 as a bi-monthly lifestyle pub, Clutch expanded last year to include four additional blogs, including celeb-focused The Edge. Founder and creative/editorial director Deanna Sutton said the company will use the funds to add new blogs, writers and ad options, including local ads. Relaunched Honey magazine operates in the same space (targeting African-American women aged 18-34), as well as Glam's Blacklife vertical network. Washington Post

One of the biggest issues for many of the bloggers that attended Blogging While Brown was access to capital to expand their online platform. Those of you who went to Blogging While Brown last year got just a hint of the wisdom Dede is sharing with other Black bloggers.

Michelle Obama Watch exists because Dede broke down the whole Wordpress Template deal. I was going to pay for a web designer. Dede save me a ton of money and opened my eyes to a whole other side of blogging and web design.Once the veil was lifted, my old coding skills from the internet dark ages kicked in and I've been going ever since.

Folks this is what I am takling about when I say Black women need to be out front creating their vision for what they want to see in the world. We can throw rocks with the best of them, but creating and building our own vision is another thing.

2009 is our year! Okay! Sisters get moving! Get creating! Start distributing! We've been rallying the troops for almost two years here, when are you going to strike your individual blow to change the depiction of African American women in popular culture? For those saying "What are YOU doing?" I can't tell y'all yet, but you'll be the first to know :0

For me, 2007 on WAOD was the year of "A new Hope". 2008 was the "Year of the Haterz". 2009 is the year The 'Gempire' Strikes Back :)

You can read an my interview with Dede   for Clutch back in the day when I was still a baby blogger. It was only a year ago, but Blog years are like dog years. It was right before a bunch of year-long drama popped off and it was nice to go back and reflect on my thoughts before all hades broke loose.

YAY DEDE!

Awwwwwww....Gina! Thanks so much Sis. You know James Harris of Elemental Interactive has been my mentor and adviser for years and I am so blessed that he will be the one to guide me and help me grow Clutch the right way.

One of my main goals for Clutch is to continue to build it and help others while doing it. My online family (Fly, Soul Bounce, Afrobella, Black Web 2.0, Black and Married with Kids, Troubl, You and so many more) have been there and supported me since the beginning and this is the step that allows me to help myself and you all as well.

I also agree this is the year for us (AA men and women) in the new media space. But, we have to support each other and allow ourselves to learn and listen in order to get where we need to be.

Again, this is such a blessing to do something that started as something so personal that I’m passionate about and be able to live out my dreams. All I can say is God has smiled on me.

Thanks again :)

I think this is my first time posting here (although I've been lurking for a LONG time); but I'm producing a series of plays exploring and celebrating black women's lives. My first production of two of the plays will be February 16 in Paris, France at Culture Rapide in the 20eme.

I have been thinking about writing a blog but I am not really technically savy when it comes to web design. Hopefully I will find a friend of a friend who can show me the ropes when it comes to blogging. I also have to step up my writing and grammar game.

Dede, I was simply commenting on the fact that some people still harbor this fantasy that Black males care about Black females.

January 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFed up observer.

@Fed Up- believe it or not there are a large amount of "us" men that not only care about but also love, adore and take care of our black sisters. We come in the shape of sons, brothers, fathers and husbands and would have it no other way.

The Dad, I do NOT believe it. Actions speak louder than words, and the state of the Black female's emotional and mental health in 2008/2009 speaks for itself. Females who are LOVED and CARED ABOUT by the males in their race are NOT in such dire straights, PERIOD.
