So Explain to me WHY Black Women Are Fans of Akon? He's at it again

The Blogmother
Now you will recall last year during this blog's infancy, we pointed out Akon simulating violent sex acts with a 14-15 year old girl on stage who got more than she bargained for. Then he threw a young fan off stage in anger, actions for which he is now facing criminal charges. Now this video from a concert in Guyana. He pushes one and smacks another Black girl off of a camera stand. From D-Listed:

Maybe he will issue another non-apology apology.
This past weekend in South America, Akon struck again. "Struck" being the key word. During his show, he decided to crowd surf to a camera stand in the middle of the audience. When he got there, one of his fans started grabbing at him. Akon must have not liked that sh*t, because he smacked her in the face and she went down. Smack that. Literally.D-Listed

He's a celebrity. Just like women still like Michael Jackson, Oj Simpson, RKelly, etc...
Akon is a disgrace but he is a celebrity and we tend to give black men a pass in our community.
I heard about this last week. Because too many of us are STUPID.
I really really strongly dislike this dude.. and he sounds like like the lost chipmunk I don't understand why black women still like this dude.. then again we are talking about the same people who are WAITING for R Kelly to drop his next album and were really upset when Mystical was sentenced to 9 years cause they were waiting for him to tour...
he is a satanic being just like all hip hop r&b people in the music industry. But what makes him a special kind of satist is he sings to women? but obvisously hates them. Wake up from the spell young and old people and burn this fool down.
the lost chipmunk ...too funny.
I gave up on modern music (apart from some gospel) when I hit 30. I just stopped understanding much of it.
For some women they've been berated, degraded and abused for so long that they justify mistreatment as the norm and as something they deserve. Any woman that we can redirect- we must! Only if it's just by one woman @ a time.
This also means, I will not buy this trash for any of the teenage males in my house AND if I find it - it hits the trashcan immediately and with little fanfare.
I'm sure they still have mp3 music I would think is inappropriate, but I make certain they at least "know" what I consider appropriate and/or inappropriate behavior. If I hear it - it's dead in the water.
Our community similarly gives Remy Ma, Da Brat and Foxy Brown passes. So gender has little to do with it. Our community simply accepts and embraces ignorance and many of our women find it appealing.
Why are black women the only ones labeled as "fans" or "supporters " of rappers, I work around people of other races and they support all these dumb artist and celebs they buy their music and go to their concerts but only black women get the blame . What about all the white women, latino women, flipino women ETC who flock after these rappers and also buy and support the music that is degarding black women, why aren't they blamed for any of their actions.
He is an idiot. What kind of man does something like this? I have never supported his music financially and I never will.
What about all the white women, latino women, flipino women ETC who flock after these rappers and also buy and support the music that is degarding black women, why aren’t they blamed for any of their actions.
Their support of hip hop has less affect on their lives. When they listen to hip hop or go to a concert, they go back home to their safe suburbs. On the other hand, when black women and men listen to and support hip hop, they have to live in the environment that hip hop helps create. Thus, when your actions have a greater negative impact on you personally, your actions are more likely to be deemed as stupid.
Also, there are relatively fewer non-black female fans of hip hop than black female fans of hip hop. One can confidently say that most young black females are hip hop fans. On the other hand, most young non-black females are NOT hip hop fans.
Even with heavy metal, the vast majority of its fans are white males whereas there is a significant number of black females who are hip hop fans. The reflects the lesser distinction between male and female trends in the black community. There is less distinction between black males and females with regard to certain behavior and trends and this commonly results in black males having less distinction between how to treat males and how to treat females. Thus, they are often just as physically aggressive toward females as they are males.
wow
dude definitely pulled a punk move. The young lady actually saved him from getting his pants pulled out from under him. Then he punched her!
wow... what a reward.
NEVER WAS A FAN... PAINFULLY UNQUALIFIED TO ANSWER! lol

The greater point is that the support of non-black fans does have a greater impact on the black fans. The money is good to promoters, record companies, and the artists. If, the money is that good, AKON and his buds must think they are doing something right. So, if you're doing something right, why stop. It is the women who need to decide that enough is enough, and choose not to be treated soooo disrespectfully and soooo brustishly by this person and anyone else trying to represent as AKON represents.
Young black women have settled for flash instead of substance in their men. Life is to short to be treated like yesterday's garbage. These women get no respect from anybody, yet they continue to chase these so called "men."
LOL I don't know any black women that likes Akon. I always felt that he was more of an MTV artist than the typical hood type. I guess some people love his raunchy lyrics. I'm amazed at how many women love Plies. I went through an Uncle Luke phase in the early 90s so I can't really comment. LOL
*like
oh and akon is and idiot. he won't be satisfied until he is indeed "locked up".

This is one of the most stupid responses I've ever heard in my life, 1st of all how do you know specifically if black women even purchase his music, 2nd how do you know most of the concert goers are even black women, all your doing is making assumptions so that you can call black women stupid. I'm a black women and I don't even listen to any of Akon's songs and the majority of my friends don't even like Akon (Men and Women).
Also so your saying its ok for people of other races to listen to music that degrades women period. Rap music doesn't degrade just black women it degrades all women so the fact that women of other races think it doesn't apply to them they have some thinking to do.
Since when did other races communities become "all safe ", there are problems and issues in all races women are not safe in all races. So people seriously need to cut the crap. Just because the news doesn't flash pictures of white men, chinese men, indian men etc doing harm to others doesn't mean that it's not taking place.
Every time Akon performs he isn't just performing to black people, the concert that this incident took place was in Guyana so if anyone had common sense they would realize that the audience is going to be heavily black, if he was in Japan the the audience would have been Japanese what if he did the same thing there, then would we say "why do Japanese women support Akon"
This is one of the most stupid responses I’ve ever heard in my life,
Actually, your response to my response is not only the most stupid, but shows an inability to read on your part.
1st of all how do you know specifically if black women even purchase his music,
I know nothing of Akon and if you would have read the post with any understanding, I was referring to hip hop in general, not Akon.
2nd how do you know most of the concert goers are even black women,
Never said that most of the concert goers are black women. Most of your FEMALE hip hop concert goers are black, or at least a higher percentage of black women go to such concerts as compared to the percentage of other women. Men are the largest consumers of hip hop, but we are not comparing women to men. We are comparing groups of women to each other. Also, a larger percentage of black women attend hip hop concerts than white women attend heavy metal concerts.
all your doing is making assumptions so that you can call black women stupid. I’m a black women and I don’t even listen to any of Akon’s songs and the majority of my friends don’t even like Akon (Men and Women).
And what does what YOU and YOUR friends do have to do with the conversation? I'm amazed at how folks inject their alledged person habits and experiences as if that proves what is the norm among the larger group.
And again, if you had read my post with any comprehension, you would notice that I make NO references to Akon, but rather made references to modern hip hop in general.
Also so your saying its ok for people of other races to listen to music that degrades women period. Rap music doesn’t degrade just black women it degrades all women so the fact that women of other races think it doesn’t apply to them they have some thinking to do.
I didn't say that anything was ok for anyone. Your emotional response clouds any form of logic you may have. There are levels of stupidity in the world and while supporting things that are shown to be greately destructive to a particular group is bad for anyone, it is worse when the supporter is a member of that group that is MOST negatively affected.
Since when did other races communities become “all safe “, there are problems and issues in all races women are not safe in all races. So people seriously need to cut the crap. Just because the news doesn’t flash pictures of white men, chinese men, indian men etc doing harm to others doesn’t mean that it’s not taking place.
No one said that it wasn't taking place. But are you seriously saying that there are no pathologies within black America that are more prevalent than with other groups? If that is the case, why do we have "What About Our Daughters" and any other black advocacy group, organization, blog, etc.?
Send his behind to jail - again. Before he was rapping he was stealing.
Anyway, I really wish people would stop assuming that all black people live in the hood and everyone else lives in the suburbs. Neither makes you immune to the forces of consumerism.
I will now scratch Akon completely off my lists of fave performers. This is the very reason why I treat black mysoginists the same way I'd treat racists.
POW,
Hip hop in and of itself is not destructive. Black women aren't responsible for the degredation in hip hop so to blame us is more than reaching. The largest audience of hip hop consists of young white males. Are they to blame? I'd say no. The ones to blame are for the most part those who make the music. The buyers play a smaller role, IMO.
I will also assume that most female hip hop fans are black (no evidence, just a hunch). But it does not mean that most black women are rap fans. Even if we were, I need to reiterate that rap itself isn't harmful. Much of hip hop today is trash.
But regarding the comment below:
"No one said that it wasn’t taking place. But are you seriously saying that there are no pathologies within black America that are more prevalent than with other groups? I don't claim to speak for WAOD but I assume this blog wasn't created simply because of "pathologies" but in recognition that black women and girls are just as important as black men and boys. At least that is how it appears to me.
I'm not necessarily a "black advocate" as I am an advocate for black women and children. My point is that I don't place emphasis on negatives/pathologies because they're many wonderful things about black womanhood that we can be proud of. If improvements are needed, they can be made. Everything isn't all gloom and doom.
Never really liked him and he's a liar.
Was it an accident, like some people are saying, or did he really do that on purpose? If so, he's a scumbag for doing that. That action is uncalled for.
1- This an old argument it has well been well documented that the majority of Hip-Hop consumers are white with males being being the first.
2- Akon is not a rapper he is a singer. Because you sing over break beats, and have rappers guest appearing on your album does not make you Hip-Hop, that is a media creation.
3- The artists are out to make a buck first and for most so if the consumer is willing to pay than they are willing to provide. Placing blame on the artist is like placing blame on a drug dealer when it is the addicts that set the demand.
4- Akon likes to put his hands on people of all colors he has thrown white men, women and black men off the stage by shoving punching or kicking them. You can find video clips of all this.
Clnmike what does the fact that the majority of hip hop consumers are White males have to do with the fact that this man likes to behave violently towards women in PUBLIC so you can only imagine what he does in private and NO this was no accident. Stop believing everything an artist's management tells them
This post did not BLAME AKON it asked why it is a group of people would adore and clamor after someone that clearly despises them.
Lastly, are you excusing this behavior?
My post was directed at the comments!
Aint nobody defending Akon as I pointed out he is an equal opportunity offender. Who deserves to be checked for his actions.
And my post was directed at those who DID BLAME Hip-Hop for this idiots actions as if the genre was one monolithic thought process intending to posion the minds of the young.
As for the precious white males no one blaming them exclusively for the music and actions of the artist. But if you want to be honest, if you want to stop the disease you go to the source, which is the consumer not the artist.
I just watched the video from a different angle this dude didnt throw any body off the platform you can see him clearly turning around when he realized who the young lady was andhold her.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1sO__98vJI&eurl=http://rhymeswithsnitch.blogspot.com/
Now of course he still is a jerk, but he didnt do it.
Okay, let's be serious now: i'm not justifying akon's actions, slapping that girl wasn't a wise move. but ladies, if a man was grabbing you like that and following you and pushing you and pulling you, are you trying to tell me that you wouldn't be tempted to slap them? some fans are crazy and those females were acting crazy by jumping on him like that. That stuff is intimidating. I don't think he meant it - it was probably just an impulsive defensive move.
So why should a black woman not like him?
