Ain't She Grand? Michelle Obama Covers Ebony Magazine

Michelle Obama is covering this month's Ebony magazine. She looks FAB! It is so nice to see a Black women on the cover of a magazine without her g-string clad rear in the air. The issue is out August 12th. here are some quotes from the article .

Michelle on campaigning and the American people…

“It has been a blessing for us to have this opportunity to spend this year traveling the country,” she tells Ebony magazine. “We’ve been in almost every state in this nation—in people’s homes, in their kitchens, in their community centers, and just having the opportunity to be reminded of how decent the American people are and how our values are so closely linked, that gives me hope.”

Michelle on her style…

“I do think what you wear is a reflection of who you are. I love to look glamorous when there’s a wonderful, purposeful event that is appropriate. But when I’m in Iowa campaigning with the girls, I am in Gap shorts and a T-shirt.”

Michelle on being a mom…

“My first job in all honesty is going to continue to be mom-in-chief,” she says, “making sure that in this transition, which will be even more of a transition for the girls…that they are settled and that they know they will continue to be the center of our universe.”

Michelle on being married to Barack…

“Barack and I – as partners, as friends and as lovers– we accessorize each other in many ways,” she said. “The best thing I love having on me is Barack on my arm and vice versa, whether it’s having him standing there smiling at me, or watching him mesmerize a crowd or talk to some seniors in a senior center.”

BARACK OBAMA-On Michelle balancing work and family…

“Michelle believes deeply in the American Dream – because she’s lived it. And as a mother of our two young daughters, she understands firsthand the challenge of balancing work and family. That ability to empathize and understand the struggles that so many hardworking families are going through will be valuable to have as a first lady.”

MARIAN JOHNSON(Michelle’s mom)-On Michelle being driven

“She always wanted to do her best, and I don’t think it had anything to do with outdoing someone else. It’s within her.”

Robin Givhan-On Michelle’s style

“People associate her with Jackie Kennedy because that’s the last time there was a first lady with a trademark style.”

Man, BUMP that Jackie Kennedy comparison. Ever hear of Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King? Lena Horne? Come on! We've always had style.

lol, When white people comment on black people having style, they seem to forget that black people set all the trends in America.

Mrs. Obama looks stunning though. I hope I get a chance to meet her one day (or, better yet, vote for her *crosses fingers*).

This cover just makes Tyra's impersonation of Michelle in Harper's that more lacking.

She looks beautiful.

I love the fact that she is a highly-educated black woman who knows who she is and doesn't apologize for it.

I don't agree with everything she says but as a young black woman myself, I do look to Michelle as a role model of what we can acheive.

The issue is out Aug 12th? Hmmm, I bought this issue last Friday.

But then again, New York newsstands always break the rules and sell issues the minute they received them.

Anyway, I like the interview with Michelle's mother and the mini-interviews with people who have known Michelle for years.

Michelle gives me so much hope. She, even more than Barack (who, granted, is the politician and thus must wade through the muck of politics) is the one who inspires me that things can be different. Brilliant, and yet unrelenting in who she is and what she stands for. LOVE. HER.

Please someone save me from the obamalytes that are bound to jump me, but I would rather vote for Michelle than Barack.

I know, I know...

The sister just seems to have her act together and she doesn't seem afraid to be black. She seems to exude strength. I know she caught a lot of flack for being too outspoken, but I'm a big fan. Be honest. Don't you get the feeling Michelle wants to tell everybody off and then move on. So, I think she's being really restrained.

It also doesn't hurt that her first name is my middle name. I know that's cheap. But, hey its a perk for me.

I'm looking forward to owning a copy of the new Ebony as Michelle Obama exudes the warmth, intellect, charisma, and presense that we as black women should have. I, too, dislike the comparisons to Jackie Kennedy because as you stated, black women in and of power has always presented themselves with fashion prowess.

I think this country could be well-served with Michelle as the First Lady because in spite of her power-forward position, she still knows her priorities, which is something many everyday women in America can identify with.

Love!

yme - For reals! I wonder if that's why she said that this might be the only time Barack runs. She can't hold her tongue that long! And I say that as a woman who has a very, very hard time holding her tongue. I gotta work on my eye rolls. that's what I'd ask her! How will you not roll your eyes when listening to the debates?

First off, mainstream america doesn't care about the history of black female style. second, this was a comparison of first ladies, and jackie kennedy was a first lady, which is what michelle is trying to become. third, Michelle is DELIBERATELY stealing Jackie Kennedy's style, and has been for the past year at least. Barack is trying to be cast as the new JFK, and michelle is trying to be the new jackie o. anyone who says otherwise hasn't been paying attention
