Black Woman, LaKecious Edwards , Wins Lawsuit Against AT&T

Hat tip to MTO

Well what are you supposed to do when your coworkers who have less experience and mared disciplinary records get promoted over you and your Black coworkers repeatedly? Well, you certainly don't wait for the statute of limitations to run out your discrimination lawsuit.

AT&T, named one of the 40 "best diversified" companies by Black Enterprise magazine, has been ordered to pay $411,339 to a Fort Worth woman who was one of three African-American employees to file suit accusing the company of racial discrimination at its Arlington call center.LaKecious Edwards received the award from a Dallas jury this week, her lawyer said Friday. Go Lakecious! The reason given for being denied a promotion:
One manager said in a deposition that Edwards was not promoted because she spoke so fast that men couldn’t understand her and because she was too emotional. SOURCE

AAAh yes, "too emotional."

But this was the kicker for me:

"Six other mi- nority employees with simi- lar complaints could not file lawsuits because the statute of limitations ran out while they waited for responses from AT&T’s legal department to internally lodged grievances." SOURCE

LaKecious, please put that money in the bank and live off of the interest.

I'm glad she won her lawsuit.

I don't know anyone that has sued an employer before. I get concerned when I hear of employees winning lawsuits. If their names are published I sincerely wonder if that will be used against them if they want another job somewhere. Are there any instances where a person that may have sued an employer or was a whistle-blower felt they were not considered for employment because of going public with complaints?

Any input from attorneys, employers or those that find themselves in this situation would be appreciated. My thoughts are just theory, not from experience.

Men could not understand her? So does that mean women could understand her?

It's all about the menz.

A very good tie in from you last post.

"LaKecious"

Where do we get these names?

Im glad she won because her name alone would cause some future interviewers to look at it and immediately pitch her application..My heart goes out to the other employees who waited to long to file their complaint, but they learned a lesson..the hard way...

I KNEW y'all were going to make fun of this child's name. She cannot help her parent's creativity.

What you should notice is she had the common sense not to let AT&T run out the clock on her in the way that they ran out the clock on six of her coworkers and now she is almost a half million dollars richer.

Keep your eyes on the prize

....being emotional is a problem? and only men couldn't understand her?

that sounds like some straight BS. I'm glad she won

Hats off to Ms. Edwards

a close friend of mine took her employer to court, man it took so long I almost forgot. I had two children before she won the case. but she did.

This is how you do it...

Gina,

I do have a serious question that you may or may not be able to answr because you may consider it legal advice.

How does one opt out of the "internal grievance" or arbitration procoess when so many company are making it a requirement for employment?

I KNEW y'all were going to make fun of this child's name. She cannot help her parent's creativity.

I know. All blame goes to her parents, or parent, for that name.

I'm glad that she won, but one must consider that what they were saying about her was probably a poor attempt at describing what they consider to be her lack of soft skills. Going back to her name, such names tend to overwhelmingly come from poor single black mothers and children in such situations tend to not be taught soft skills.

It's hard to say without better details of why she was not promoted, especially with the good record the company has with regard to promotion of minorities.
