The Blogmother
I have gotten your emails about LaVena Johnson's article on Salon.com. I will be posting on it tomorrow when I finish drafting. After three years, I think this issue is worthy of something more than a post as I am running out the door.
To learn more about LaVena's story, you can go to her memorial website.

So sad. For years I've been combing through the faces of the fallen. I'm sorry to say that LaVena may not be the only one. If you visit my memorial tribute for black women soldiers, you can count the amount of black women who died from "non combat related" reasons. Their families have contacted me on occasion. I know so much sad stories that the military won't release, it breaks my heart.

The number of military rapes is astronomical. We're hearing more and more buzz about it. They're hiring more rape counselors on many of the bases.
*sigh*
The story of LaVena Johnson is a tragedy.
Gina,
I can't find WAOD email link and the one I tried didn't work. I wanted to send this story to you...although you may have posted it already.

It is about a 49 year old black women that dies in an ER waiting room. NO one helps her although some people are in the room, security officers walk by, a doctor walks by. Finally a nurse walks by a kicks her like she would a dog!
I can't believe that I nearly joined the military a while back.
I am so sorry that this happened to her and my heart goes out to her family - and all the other families who have lost their loved ones under these circumstances.
The military is so sick to cover this up.
I always thought that the military was supposed to be so egalitarian and open and non discriminatory.
I really don't think the military has enough to offer us considering the terrible risks we face when enlisting.
We are in more danger from fellow soldiers than from so-called enemies.
My prayers are with her family.
