Podcast Open Thread: Pearl Jr. and Can Black Women Get Love in the Media

If you didn't get a chance to participate in the rumble in the podcast jungle last night, we had lots of strong reactions and this by far was the most mentally demanding show of the entire year. By all means, share your thoughts and views.

Wow, this podcast was like WWE Raw. PLEASE bring the HIV/AIDS podcast quickly --people need this ignorance killed... now.

David Malebranche, Quinitin Robinson and Kevin Fenton. The are all RENOWNED HIV/AIDS researchers and medical doctors.

They will dispute Pearl's "chitlin eatin'" theory about HIV and AIDS. When I have calmed down, I will write a better response. If you contact David and Quintin, they are my friends. Kevin Fenton is the DIRECTOR of the CDC HIV/TB Unit. He is an MD PHD. Dave is a MD/MPH and Quintin is a MD/MPH.

blkseagoat,

I sent you an email asking you to forward me their email addresses.

@Larry,

Oh I can just imagine.

I'm not going to even post tomorrow. I am sure we can stay going for about a week on the podcast alone.

On a lighter note, congratulations on your one year anniversary. You all are true heroes in my eyes!

That poor woman has been getting her info from the beauty shop and not health care professionals. She is clearly not educated about the issue. I even remember my high school bio teacher saying that it is easier for women to transmit HIV to men vaginally so men must be active about protecting themselves too, so heterosexual sex is not some kind of haven from HIV/AIDS. Promiscuity and unprotected sex is the issue, it shouldn't matter if it came form hetero or homosexual activity. Is their a high rate of AIDS among gay men yes- it is a very small commnunity, but they are not the ones running around and giving it to straight women.

Gina,

I copied you on the email I sent to 3 exception HIV/AIDS phyicians. David and Quintin are clinicians and researchers. Dr. Veronica Jenkins is the Medical Director for Family Medical and Counseling Service.

All are board certified by the American Academy of HIV Medicine.

When do you plan to do the show?

I caught the podcast last week on itunes this weekend, and I'm really disheartened that the guests contributions simply contributed to the 'cult of black men obsession,' and really bad celebrity gossip. And, the stuff about HIV transmission was ridiculous. Does it matter how 'someone got it' or that our compassion is needed. The discourse was lowered this week, and I'm glad a fruitful discussion about transmission is going to come out of it.

I realize everyone was disappointed about the podcast. So was I. I thought it would be a discussion about Black women in the media in keeping with our previous discussion over a year ago. Instead it turned into a rambling mess covering everything from controversial theories related to HIV transmission to Michael Jackson and athletes who date White women. It devolved into an unseemly screaming match and that is not the purpose or goal of the podcast.

We have previously tackled controversial subjects and callers on the podcast in t he past , but the shows have never devolved into such an epic train wreck . As the host I have to take responsibility for the content of my show in the same way I ask everyone else to take responsibility for the content they put out in the world. Therefore I have taken down the podcast from Blog Talk Radio.

As soon as I secure trained medical professionals as guests to talk about HIV transmission, we'll do a show on that topic.

Thank you again for listening. I have to be willing to take the criticism with the praise and in this case I think the criticism is warranted.

Ok, I hope I got the correct thread this time. And it's nice to know what's going on now...

Anyway, my computer at work apparently downloaded the podcast.
I listened to it this morning at work, and I have a few thoughts.

I understand why people would take offense to the HIV/AIDS statements, because it was misinforming due to how it was presented. Yet, several people did get the chance to retort with the facts (you can easily combat the misinformation with the upcoming show). However, I don't see why the podcast was taken down after fact. I think the overall show was entertaining and very informative in everything else. Many people who know or follow Pearl Jr. know they won't be catching any zzzzz or footsy talk. They appreciate her because many things she say may be controversial, but they are usually on point. Frankly, I enjoyed the show. Just had to share.

la,

It's the misinformation that she masqueraded and tried to dress up as facts.

In this day and age, such behavior is reprehensible and grossly irresponsible. She could have chosen to address behavior, but didn't because she believed differently. "It's not about being PC; it's about saving lives..." is what she said, but in fact did not believe because of her crack-pot/conspiracy theories. What happens if a woman engages in vaginal sex woth a man who has put himself at risk for HIV infection, does that change the risk? If any qualified medical professional told her different, then she should select another provider immediately. The other thing is that general practioners are simply that... generalists. An ID doc or OB/Gyn would have gotten pearl together in a heart beat.

Being controversial DOES NOT mean that you have anything intelligent or meaningful to say, just ask Ann Coulter, Dave Banner, Rush Limbaugh, or hell, even Damon Wayans.

I thought that she was a self-righteous hypocrite who is really obsessed with white women, is a black male apologist, and just another voice of ignorance crying out to an already confused wilderness, whether she believes it or not.

She is definitely entitled to her opinions, but shouldn't be considered an authority on anything.

Gina, please don't have that woman back on your show. She was utopian to the point of nihilism. With every word she spoke she peeled back layers of crazy. I knew as soon as she spoke those words about HIV and gay men that all Hell was gonna break loose and that BLKSeaGoat was gonna hand it to her. She's totally in her own little world.

That show was entertaining, though. But I understand your disappointment in it getting off track.

April 28, 2008 | Unregistered CommenternOva

wow! i just don't know what to say about pearl jr. ummm yes, the show was interesting. it's just disheartening to hear that so many people are still confused about hiv/aids. the sad thing is she's definitely not alone in her views on the subject. i think she may have been confused with the feedback. it's not about keeping it real and raw; it's about being informed. outside of the hiv comments the show was ok. i couldn't care less about interracial dating/marriage but i do understand that it is a big issue with some black women.

anyhoo, congrats on your anniversary. i look forward to hearing the podcast every week.
