Charmayne Brown, Television Reporter Attacked on Camera by Whites in South Carolina
Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at 5:40AM
The Blogmother She is attacked in broad daylight by a group of White folks as they yelled racial epithets at her...ON CAMERA. NO shame!
Three people upset that a news crew was reporting on the arrest of a relative attacked the television reporter and yelled racial slurs at her and a photographer, authorities said Tuesday. They didn't attack the White film crew that was filming nearby and captured the attack. The family members, all white, began yelling and charged at black WSPA-TV reporter Charmayne Brown while she was standing in the street near the family's home in Union, said news director Alex Bongiorno.
Brown was punched in the head, and black cameraman Ti Barnes was also struck as he tried to pull family members off Brown, Bongiorno said. A video of the attack shows Brown, who wasn't seriously injured, defending herself. Associated Press
I want y'all to notice the brothers defending Charmayne and the ones standing around. Thanks Ti for sticking up for a sister! In the second video, you see Ti basically standing in between Charmayne and the attackers as she walks away basically like Gandolf in The lord of the Rings saying "Thow Shall Not Pass!"-- Al Sharpton, are you watching?... Black men are supposed to be defending Black women from attack. Charmayne and Ti, keep your heads up!
More Videos on Youtube.
Watch the attackers being carried away.

gripping! I'm glad they got it on camera
I send props to the cameraman who stepped into the fray like a brother should in a situation like that. Frankly, he exercised admirable restraint because in watching it, I kept thinking, "okay, you can just start swinging for the bleachers on these fools". Brother may have been correct in the situation, it might have gone from bad to worse.
I'm totally disgusted with the other brothers in the video who stood and watched, particularly the brother with the cell phone trying to play photographer, who did not get exercised about anything until the white woman took a swipe at his phone, THEN he jumped bad. But his sister getting beat down in front of him was not worthy of a response? Sorry ass excuse for a man, and all they were doing was getting in Ti's way as he is trying to help his sister out.
Here is the scary and be wary part. The types that jumped Charmayne are the same types who abused Megan Williams. Thats what they were willing to do in broad daylight with cameras rolling. Under different circumstances, they would have done much worse. And those types can be found in many places.
I saw this on another website. It appears that there were several other black men AND women in the area when the camera crews from various agencies were reporting on this story. I guess they thought an episode of Jerry Springer was being filmed.... Perhaps the black folk in this area are somewhat indifferent to racial slurs being thrown around and didn't quite understand why Ms. Brown was so upset.
Sad.
This is so sad. What is with some black men? For some reason, they love to watch women fight and for what? I'm tired of seeing them stand on the sidelines...it's not cute - stand up for your people!
Low life trash attacking her like that....
Well, OF COURSE you have black men standing by watching while a black woman is being attacked. Look, I'm not saying that the men standing around should have beat the attackers down, but damn, can you help pull the women off of her? It was 3 of them, 1 of her. It's obvious the cameraman was struggling, and you just stand there. Good grief.
I couldn't tell if the white guy in the mix was trying to pull the women off her, or egging them on. If he was indeed trying to help, it's even more shameful than other black men were standing around looking.
And some people in this county think that 'we've' progressed so far...
It's very clear that with this example that thankfully happened to be captured on video....that we have even further to go. There are many incidents that occur frequently that aren't on tape or accessible to the media.
As much as I hope for better relations among all people...I can't articulate to non minorities how situations like this make you feel inside...
MY SISTER HAD TO DEFEND HERSELF. SOME OF OUR PEOPLE JUST DON'T HAVE A CLUE. KEEP YOUR HEAD UP CHARMYNE.
Elizabeth
In an effort to do journalistic work and present the news no matter how difficult it may get, these black reporters found themselves caught in extreme racial tensions. I find it quite disheartening that while they were being beat down, the White TV crew walked away untouched and with tons of footage that perpetuate ill stereotypes. Yet, this is reality and the conditions that we live in, and I’m glad that it was caught on film so that people around the world can witness it for themselves. I admire Brown and Barnes for standing in the midst of adversity and putting forth an effort to do their jobs in spite of having the cameras turn on them.
I can't tell who is who. Who was the older white woman (with the purse on her arm) bending down talking to?
Never mind, the second video is better.
I'm glad they were arrested.
amazing. i am grateful that charmayne's camera man ty stepped in... and that the three women were charged with assault and battery. what amazed me most was the brothers and sisters who stood by and did nothing.
This is NOT sad. Its downright infuriating! Thank goodness there are some black people like that cameraman who still feel like standing up for what is right. What in the world was going on with that dude with the dreadlocks?
Wow. Just wow. Lord help us if there ever is a racial war. Its brewing, I can feel it in the air. Compartmental warfare. Different seemingly isolated incidents, in different places that all add up. This is the kind of video that gets the KKK thinking that its the right time to start terrorizing black folks b/c most of them are completely oblivious to shit thats not directly affecting their personal welfare(not the cks.
I didn't watch this video until today because I knew, I'd get pissed.
While I tip my hat to the camera man, the reaction and inaction of the dreadlocked men is disturbing.
They appeared to be enjoying the fact that this black woman had been getting jumped.
