Black Women End 2008 With a Roar: Tamron Hall &Cynthia McKinney

We ended 2007 in cruise control, but we can't say the same for 2008. I couldn't go on New Year's blogcation without leaving you with two last mentions of Black women in the media spotlight. The first is Tamron Hall, an MSNBC anchor who was "moderating" a discussion about the "Barack the Magic Negro" song. The Black Snob awarded Tamron Monday, "The Award for Most Patience With A Crazy Person" Women on the Web has a description:

MSNBC’s anchor Tamron Hall weighed in on the controversial song, "Barack the Magic Negro," saying she wouldn’t find it funny if someone called her "Tamron Hall the Magic Negro Anchor Lady." The anchor was hosting a segment discussing RNC chairman candidate Chip Saltsman’s Christmas greeting this year that contained a CD with the song "Barack the Magic Negro." Hall listened to Kate Obenshain, vice president of Young America’s Foundation, defend the song, calling it "a parody." Then Hall, an African American, interjected, saying there is nothing "funny or amusing" about it. She later told Obenshain, "You’re not going to win a lot of people over calling them ‘Magic Negros.’" wowowow

Cynthia McKinney's Voyage
Our second "noteable" is Cynthia McKinney. Of all the places I expected Cynthia McKinney to pop up next is on a boat trying to outrun the Israeli Navy.

WHAT in the world? Now I have to give it to her, that's either dedication or run of the mill crazy, but TRUST Jesse and AL would never be on a boat trying to outrun anything except bad weather.

Y'all rest up, 2009 looks like its goign to be a doozy.

Anyone in here gleefully praised the man who threw the shoe at George Bush are ineligible to participate in any indignation over the "Obama The Magic Negro" song. Everyone else, I have to say that I fear that you might be trampling on 1st Amendment rights. The song is about as offensive as a plaid leisure suit, white patent leather shoes, and a silk ascot tied around the neck. Bad fashion in not illegal nor are corny jokes. The song was not funny but people should be allowed to create such parodies. Now on to Imus....

The nappy head hoes comment was hysterical. Yes, I know this is an unpopular sentiment but I nearly fell out my chair when I heard it. It was as funny as a comedian making fun of the blind (ie. Eddie Murphy) or a comedian making fun of regional accents that nearly impair speaking abilities (ie. Eddie Murphy). I think the indignation over this is yet another example of misplaced priorities AND I must note that the indignation is coming exclusively from the Left. Yeah, I said that too. These same folks were strangely silent after radio dj's, whose fan base I am a member of, played a prank in which a couple was paid to have sex in a Church. The firestorm that ensued came only from the right. In my opinion, this was well placed indignation because something that was sacred to someone was defiled in a most profane way. "Magic Negro" song parodies and crude humor does not warrant indignation. If it ain't funny than don't laugh, don't linger and marinate, and move on (no pun intended).

Cynthia McKinney is such an inspiration. She knows how the majority of Americans feel about her and yet she is still not afraid to speak her truth.

December 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMari-Djata

The comments are not funny because it exposed deep seeded resentment & prejudices against our people. SO if I am happy of anything.. I am happy that this just another wake up call to say... "we have FAR to go!" Wake up people we can't afford to sleep because Barack Obama will be at the helm. We need to get this ship in order and move forward. This is NO time to relax... there is work to be done.

in your haste to chastise posters on this board, you failed to distinguish the 2 separate issues that are present in the "Magic Negro" debacle. No one here has argued that individuals in america don't have a right to speak freely. The real issue is the incredibly poor judgement, bad taste, disrespect, and ill will displayed toward the President Elect of the United States of America, a country, and ideals, you people proclaim to love. None of the situations you described are an apt parallel for ridiculing the president of the united states of america, based on his ethnic heritage. It's even more heinous that so called leaders of a dying party desperately in need of minority recruitment to its cause would engage in such bufoonery. You are not in a position to tell anyone else what warrants indignation for them. Apparently, your ability to operate outside the limited paradigm of "left vs right", has deluded you into thinking that somehow, these categories are meaningful outside your cranium. We decide for ourselves what is meaningful, or offensive to us, and you can accept it, or move on (who cares about the pun?)...

December 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBlues N Catfish

Blues N Catfish, once again..

It was a corny joke, that's all it was. The indignation is not only an overreaction but, in my opinion, more of the same hysterical knee jerk responses that characterize political discourse on the extreme left.

The Magic Negro "thingy" wasn't funny. As far as I am concerned, dude needed to develop an Obama joke from a completely different angle. The concept, or motif, of the "magical negro" implies a sidekick like archtype or personae, if you will. This specific type of personae is embodied in the cinematic characterizations of Bagger Vance (Will Smith in "Bagger Vance), Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg in "Ghost"), Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg in Star Trek: The Next Generation), John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan in "The Green Mile), Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne in "The Matirx), and Dick Halloran (Scatman Crothers in "The Shining) just to name a few. My point is the joke completely missed because when one is elected President of the most powerful nation on Earth, they are no one's sidekick. But I digress.....

My overall point is, if you'll allow yet another cinematic reference, this entire hysteria is like "Groundhog Day". We've been here before and I don't mean some veiled reference to racism or " 'dem evil 'publicans..." This is a repeat of the sitcom entitled "The Blacks Are Offended Again." Actually we can also substitute the word "Blacks" with "Liberals".

Yes, I do possess some angst over this because it is appearing more and more that black folks are thin skinned and whiny, as well as being the bearers of double standards regarding discourse on race. Yeah I said that. This is why I also cited Imus. It would take him several lifetimes to utter the sort of humor directed at whites that one hears and sees on Def Comedy Jam and various Richard Pryor routines. Just for the record, I like that humor too - racist humor that cracks me up. There is another double standard as well. I think you referred to it as "...disrespect, and ill will displayed toward the President... of the United States..." In this instance I have to slap you with a "PUHLEEZE". If you were so concerned about disrespect towards a President than I would have heard from you AT LEAST 8 years ago. Clearly you are being totally... ummmm what's that word called again? Someone used it to summarize the behavior of the United Nations Security Council when they convened to call an end to the fighting in Gaza only after Israel responded in self defence to Hamas firing rockets into southern Israel. Dang, what's that word again? Its spelled almost like the name of that Greek physician who lived in the time of Pericles. Oh, it'll probably come to me later.

Anyway, the joke wasn't funny and that's all. I realize that the hysteria and controversy is largely contrived and yet another reflex conditioned by our desire, or need, to find racism, even when it isn't there. We as a people seem to have a codependency with invented victimization. Oh wait a minute... Hypocrite. That was the word I was thinking about. Phew! Just in time because my retort is finished.

No hard feelings Blues N Catfish. In fact, I want to give you the greatest gift that anyone can give as well as recieve. DISCO!!!! I got some good disco for you. What I find interesting regarding the MSNBC clip is Kate O. said several times that CS shouldn't have distibuted the song; record the song, share it with your like-minded friends, but don't distribute it. The whole parody angle is a load. Post-racsicm....right.

December 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMissRockyMay

gem, actually I'm really on a mission. I'm like a born again Christian who wants to share the news with everyone. No, not my conservatism but I do like to share that too. The thing, or gospel I am trying to share is disco. My conservatism is just a means to those ends. Here is some disco for you.....

Yup, that's right Gem. I just linked up a classic by The Supremes. IT was a tough decision. I didn't know whether to link the Boris Dlugosch remix of "The Player" by First Choice or the Supremes. I decided on The Supremes because this is a damn solid song. Happy New Year!!!!

December 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAl From Bay Shore

We would do best to enter the New Year with joy and not allow a male excuser for bad behavior while denying positive acts of dissent ruffle a feather. The reporter who threw his shoes at Bush has been beaten and jailed and will probably remain there for 2-7. Now if we want to apply equal justice then those that would defend a racialized insult should have some sort of punishment in kind. Cynthia McKinney risked her life to deliver medicine to Gaza citizens caught in the cross fire because the Israeli military is not above killing anti-war activists even if they are American. Since she's just a "lowly" and much maligned Black women I would've expected even less courtesy. Happy New Year everyone!!!

December 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterFaith

What's a racialized insult? Is that anything like a "disproportionate response" when defending your civilians from rocket attacks at the hands of terrorists? You guys would make great UN Security Council spokespersons. Next stop Rwanda but not before we chastize people for not taking donations from Arabian autocrats who blame September 11th on America. Go Cynthia.

here are the facts:

1. The republican party is dying as conservatism has proven itself to be an abysmal failure.

2. Conservatism, and its sales rep, aka the republican party will have to recruit minorities or shrivel up and die

3. The republican party cannot expect to attract a badly needed minority presence with the type of insensitivity and arrogance displayed in the "Magic Negro" debacle.

4. Freedom of speech is guaranteed so all americans have the right to speak and think as they please, however, it is a glaring example of poor judgement and inhumanity when what you want to speak is idiotic hostility against your fellow americans for no other reason than ethnicity.

5. No amount of prevaricating passive aggressive blather can hide the poorly veiled hostility toward President Barak Obama in "magic negro"

These facts are irrefutable. Live with it.

After Bill Clinton was elected the first time, there was an article in the New York Daily news that painted he and Hillary to be stone cold poor white trash. They even went so far as to say that the official limo would be displayed on the front lawn of the white house on cinder blocks, a trailer would be put in place and the white house used for guests etc. I am not surprised at the "Barack the magic negro" song. In fact, I am surprised it hasn't been worse. We can be very tasteless sometimes. However, at least it wasn't like the front page of a German news paper referring to the white house as "uncle toms cabin."

December 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commentermsday

Okay y'all. My offer is recinded. I found that Chi-lites remix on the CD entitled "Larry Levan Live at the Paradise Garage". Unfortunately its from a live set and is part of a mix. what you represent is the voice of the myopic majority. In addition to that, you represent hubris and arrogance quite well. Too bad, none of what you say is relevant. Your words have no power here. Be gone.

What's happening within Gaza is a humanitarian crisis. Medical supplies, medicine and much needed supplies are being denied by Israel. Israel has imposed a blockade stopping any kind of help into the settlement.

Innocent women and children are being denied basic rights imposed by the UN and the Geneva Convention.

There is no justification in bombing schools and hospitals and they know Hamas is not hiding in those places.

I must applaud Miss Mckinney for having the courage to stand up when so many others won't!

(Who among us "didn't" enjoy seeing that flying shoe headed for Bush's head?)

There will be more jokes, blogs detailing incompetence and everything else. Some fair and some unfair. But, it's definitely coming.

January 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterYme

Yme, I'm not exactly a Donna Summer fan - never could get into the acts on Casablanca Records save Parliament. I was gonna wait for a new thread BUT since the IDF started bloodying the nose of Hamas, I've been in a celebratory mood. Hopefull Obama will continue to tack towards the center and be sympathetic to Israel's right to self defense as well as putting the pressure on the foolish mullahs in Iran. I wouldn't mind some crude and sleazy policies that made it easy for moderate Arab regimes to drop Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria, and Iran like a bad habit.

Now, for my selection I was gonna post the Beach Boys "Barbara Ann" so that we all could sing "Bomb, bomb, bomb.... bomb, bomb Iran.... to the song BUT I felt that you guys still had some boogie in you. If you cannot get into this piece, then you must be dead. Frankly, I feel that the cover of this song by Martha Wash and Jocelyn Brown was QUITE ANEMIC. Therefore, I shall post the original because I think the song is perfect in its original version. Enjoy!!!

Oh, why not. I'm gonna drink the last bit of champagne and launch my incursion into the crowded urban centers where ignorance hides amongst the civilians, and greatly diminish their abililty to launch their rockets into my hinterlands. The condemnation of the UN, Cynthia McKinney, and the other enablers be damned!!!! Free Gilad Shalit!!!

First up..... Blues N Catfish (Lena is on deck).

"what you represent is the voice of the myopic majority."

There is nothing myopic about seeing terrorists base themselves in a school from which they launch mortar shells upon civilians.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmXXUOs27lI&feature=channel_page

Your are merely projecting the myopia that is inherent to your completely misinformed view of what is going on in the world today. Have you turned a bline eye to Darfur also? You seem the type who would argue that we ought be "tolerant" to female circumcision in Africa because your relativism views such "tolerance" as being "appreciative and respectful of cultural diversity".

"Too bad, none of what you say is relevant."

Indeed, it is as relevant as keeping an eye, in real time, on global events and its relationship to a government's stated foreign policy. Its a shame that you are still mired in the outdated 70s era protest rhetoric that you unconditionally accepted in your black/feminist/marxist studies class at "Hate America U."

"Your words have no power here. Be gone."

My words have enough power to identify the fact that you have yet to provide any facts or evidence to support your OPINIONS. It appears that you have merely drank the Kool Aid that is "hate America hearsay rhetoric" and are regurgitating its tired and outdated talking points. There seems to be, on your part, a glaring and gaping chasm between your assertions and the actual facts. I feel like I trying to explain to "pop culture" that Paradise Garage was genuine while Studio 54 was fake and manufactured. Blues N Catfish, at the risk of appearing condescending, I am going to accuse you of endorsing Michael Bolton politics in the face of Eddie Kendricks authenticity.

Batting next is Lena....

January 3, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAl From Bay Shore

Hey Lena!!! :) Yvonne is on deck...

"And yes, George Bush ducking shoes was funny as all get out!"

You are right, that was funny. I couldn't hide the smile on my face as it happened in spite of the fact that I respect the man. HOWEVER, the hypocrisy that is emanating from those "offended" by the Barack song parody is staggering as well as ignorant. These fools are no different than the Civil Rights establishment portraying the Jena thugs as victims of racism while turning a blind eye to black on black victimization. You can't have it both ways guys. If a song parody is offensive to a President elect then throwing a shoe at a sitting President is, at the very least, just as heinous AND warrants an equivalent amount of indignation. Anything else is nothing but blind and misinformed partisanship. Some of you guys are worse than the Klan.

"It’s too bad the guy that did it has been traeted so badly."

I bet you are one of those folks who screamed bloody murder at the prosecutorial overreach in the case of Mychal Bell? Or maybe you jumped on the Crystal Mangum bandwagon during the Duke Rape Case? Did you also think that the NAACP was taking a bold and controversial stand when they provided legal support to the perps in the case of Dunbar Village? But never mind all that, the real point is the last time an Arab Leader held a press conference for the news media? When was the last time a critic of an Arab regime was entitled to a fair and just trial, and you can include Jordan and Egypt. I concede that some police brutality may have occurred BUT he is undergoing a trial. Stuff like that don't happen in the Arab world. There is NOT the transparency that is characteristic of functioning democracies within the Arab Muslim world EXCEPT for Afghanistan and Iraq. I gotta ask the question: Are you as fervent when men, in Bangladesh who have thrown acid in the faces of women, face little if any punitive action? Let's be honest, shall we? You are yet another "democrat or die negro" who is attempting to offer a "fair and balanced" opinion on a repubican president. Here is the difference between the democratic party and the republicans: Republicans treat black people like animals and Democrats treat them like their pets. How do the scraps from massa's table taste?

"The greedy Bush/Cheney team completely ruined this country."

Lena, the 70s called, they want their talking points back. Reading your comments, I get the feeling you are about unearth some henpecked man, dress him in a powder blue dashiki, birkenstocks, bell bottoms, and take him to a San Francisco poetry reading of repressed lesbian poets and guilty white folks. Uhuru Sasa!! Anyways, I like the idea of not being attacked by terrorist on the American homeland. I also like the idea of introducing a democratic influence in the Mid East and Central Asia as a means of giving a voice to Arab Moderates thus marginalizing the influence of Islamofascist fundamentalist extremism and terrorism. What I also like is a President who has given more aid to Africa than any other President in history. Then there is the thing about appointing black folks to the position of National Security Advisor, Secretary of State, and then National Security Advisor again. And by the way, the idea of giving subprime mortgages with lax requirements happened under Clinton's watch. And speaking of Clinton, how do you not notice 19 Arabs in the country going to flight school? Maybe it has something to do with halting an FBI investigation into the bombing of the USS Cole at the behest of a clueless American ambassador to Yemen. Ironically, the lead investigator of that team died in the stairwell of the World Trade Center on September 11th.

"I grew up with a saying “More Hair”! Now I say, “More shoes!”

Do you also say "More Saddam?" I'm sure when he was wiping out the Kurds and the Shia, you were like "Who cares if those people of color kill each other..." but when it was percieved that white folks were involved, you got in line to join the protest. I believe you are the type who only finds value in people when you believe that white people can be connected to the "injustice". Don't worry, you are not alone. The Civil Rights industry does the same exact thing - they are never around when black on black victimization happens BUT when white folks become part of the equation, they are primming themselves for the television cameras.

Next up.... Yvonne!!!

January 3, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAl From Bay Shore

"Innocent women and children are being denied basic rights imposed by the UN and the Geneva Convention."

Are you talking about the innocent men and women being subject to random rocket attacks in Southern Israel? As far as the Geneva Convention is concerned, you must be referring to the illegal kidnapping of Gilad Shalit. Of course I am joking. You are in favor of the rocket attacks because, on some twisted level, you have sided with Hamas and don't really understand what is going on. You have to ask yourself the following, are you with Al Fatah and the Palestinian Authority or are you with Hamas. Please remember that Hamas broke the truce, not Israel. And by the way, I must note the fact that Israel targets Hamas, carefully while Hamas randomly launches missiles into Southern Israel without care for where they land. Also, Hamas places its military targets in densly populated areas filled with civilians. The commonality of many of my critics is their misplaced and misinformed indignation. There are clear and obvious parallels to the actions and attitudes of the Civil Rights Industrial Establishment. Oh wait, I just got word that Hamas has warned of sending suicide bombers into Israel. I know, in your mind, all Israeli civilians deserve death. You probably think the Sept. 11th attacks on civilians were justified and caused by US policy. Allahu Akbar!!! Time to dust off your dynamite vest I suppose. I have to wonder if the likes of Hamas and Al Qaeda have actually READ the Holy Qur'an.

"There is no justification in bombing schools and hospitals and they know Hamas is not hiding in those places."

Okay, its official. You have no clue what you are talking about. In other words, you are completely misinformed. Watch this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmXXUOs27lI&feature=channel_page

What you fail to understand is this is how the terrorists get down. They dig themselves inside of, and around civilians. Stop reciting the talking points of brutal and repressive Third World dictatorships that think blaming America and Israel is a substitute for responsible governance. Impress me and, at the very least recite the criticisms of the Palestinian Authority and Egypt. At least they have the common sense to note that Hamas brought this on themselves. And by the way, the Palestinian Authority was democratically selected until Hamas staged a violent coup. Yvonne, you need to come to grips with what you actually support.

"I must applaud Miss Mckinney for having the courage to stand up when so many others won’t!"
