Michelle Obama Named "American of the Year"
Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at 8:24AM
The Blogmother I was going to write about Oprah Winfrey being over 50 years old, yet still at war with her body, but I decided that my imaginary Auntie deserves a "multimedia" response from all the little Black girls of America who've been hoodwinked, brainwashed and psychologically scarred by watching Oprah's body image disorder play out on national television over the past 20 years. Anywhoo.
I did want to applaud DeWayne Wickam of USA Today for Awarding Michelle Obama the American of the Year award. She deserves it! I don't care what anybody says, nobody. NOBODY too the hits that Michelle Obama took over the past 12 months, not even the candidate and she's held up well.
Perhaps in the most poignant point of the article, Wickham’s writes:
“She is the well-educated black wife and mother that Hollywood won’t acknowledge and much of white America hasn’t discovered.”
In a nutshell, Wickham’s statement translates into black women being unseen by some and purposely ignored by others. Either way, First Lady Elect Michelle Obama opened a dialogue that challenges mainstream media hunger for broadcasting black women in varying degrees of negative light. And clearly she can’t be ignored. Michelle Obama Watch

Happy to read this. Seriously we cant be ignored no more. Power to the Black WOMEN!
“She is the well-educated black wife and mother that Hollywood won’t acknowledge and much of white America hasn’t discovered.” This alone speak volumes!
There will be Black folks who will not identify with her. But I don't care. Finally A WOMAN...A SISTER, that I know showing the world that WE exist.
It's so satisfying to learn of this. Ms. Obama seems like a lovely person. She's intelligent, attractive, and appears to generously show affection to her children and her husband. It's refreshing to have a Black women that I, my daughters and other women can be proud of.
Hooray for Michelle Obama! She makes all of us so proud; grounded, graceful, and a multi-tasker extraordinaire!
I have a google alert on Michelle Obama and interesting articles come in hourly from newspapers all over the world. I am very excited to have this woman as our new First Lady. Pretty is, as Pretty does... and she is pretty inside and outside. She has given me a better direction to support my workaholic husband by believing in him and the work he does. Michelle is a fine example to ALL woman, wives and mothers. The person she is, surpasses colors of race. She is my role model and I am some white girl in her 50's. She is making a difference in our country for everyone.
Wonderful!
Everyone are wondering what Mrs. Obama will tackle as Firt Lady, I think it should be:
1. Teenage Pregnacies and pregnacies out of wedlock.
2. Obesity
3. By being First Lady, Michelle is showing the world that all Black women are not whores.
Thanks for the nod, Gina! I happened to be skipping through the blogosphere daisies and of course I stopped here to pick some flowers. :-)
See ya at M.O.W. on Tuesday. I think I'll feature a piece on M. Obama vs. Condi Rice that triggered a bit of a debate at a blog that I frequent...
PS: It breaks my heart that Oprah continues to publicly "fight her weight." By essentially apologizing for her weight so much, she's missing that her success and benevolence should not be mixed attached to self-esteem-busting weight issues. Young black girls are watching and learning to "apologize and accept criticism" when less than perfect.
so true about Oprah. SMH.
She's one of my heroines. It's an award that's well-deserved. :-)
Congratulations to our new BLACK first lady! The honorable and beautiful Mrs Michelle Obama! Power to the Black woman in '09 woo hoo!
