Christine Beatty, WAOD Wagging Finger of Shame Recipient, Resigns-- Toni Morrison Endorses Obama

Last week we gave Christine Beatty, the Chief of Staff to perpetually scandal-plagued Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, the Wagging Finger of Shame Award. Ms. Beatty shared the award with Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. Not because they both lied under oath, but because they chronicled their affair in embarrassing detail in 14,000 txt msgs on city-issued Blackberries.

Some people said "why is this news?". It is news because the arrogance and decision-making these two engaged in while carrying out the affair and again while covering it up led to the City of Detroit, already in a financial pinch, to hand out 9 MILLION Dollars to two wrongfully terminated police officers. What the verdict meant was that even without knowing about these 14,000 text messages, the jury didn't believe Ms. Beatty or the Mayor of Detroit. The jury thought they were both liars, and it turns out they were right.

This is also a WAOD story because of all of the Black women who are now in the spotlight as a result of the textual healing going on. And now, the cast of characters in ....

"AS DETROIT TURNS"

Christine Beatty, the Gifted Paramour and Protector
Ms. Beatty, despite her utter complete stupidity in the world of personal relationships is a very bright woman who has run successful, successive election campaigns for Kilpatrick. If you knew what a mess Kwame was, you would recognize how gifted this woman is as a political strategist. I give her some credit for having the self awareness to do what Kwame will not do, resign. Or maybe she is just resigning to help out her love. Who cares. Once again, she did the smartest thing she could do. I'd hire her. I just wouldn't let her have a Blackberry..or email...or pen and paper...or anything with which she could memorialize her thoughts or ideas.

Carlita Kilpatrick, the Devoted and Betrayed Spouse
Carlita Kilpatrick, the mayor's wife is certainly at the center of this mess. Right now she appears to be behaving in character. She's come out and done a kiss for the cameras and appears to be standing by her man, but how will she react to reports that just last week, Kwame was cuddled up in an Asheville, NC resort getting couples massages and eating chocolate covered strawberries with someone other than Carlita.

Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, the Doting Mother and Chief Enabler

Carolyn Cheeks Kilptrick, Kwame's everloving and enabling mother. Mothers are supposed to love their children unconditionally so I understand Kwame's mama repeatedly coming to her baby's rescue. But her Baby invoked her name, his aunt, his wife and all the other "strong women in his life" while lying on the witness stand abut whether he was having relations with Ms. Beatty. Mama Kilpatrick, he used you to cover his dirt. Check out Mama Kilpatrick defending her baby. Hysterical!!!! IF YOU NEVER CLICK ANOTHER LINK ON THIS BLOG, YOU MUST WATCH THE FOOTAGE OF MAMA KILPATRICK!

Mother's are supposed to love their male children, but Mama Kilpatrick needs to take lil' Kwame to the woodshed. Not for being a tramp and a trollop and causing untold anguish to her grand babies, not for dishonoring the family name, not for being arrogant with the use of money, goods and services he has access to as the Mayor of Detroit, but she need to pull out a green switch for documenting his utter complete stupidity. Mama Kilpatrick, you child is gifted, but he is indeed spoiled and your constantly enabling isn't helping.

Kim Worthy, the Prosecutor
Kym Worthy, many of you have heard of Kym from back in the days when she was an ADA. She went on to be a judge and now she is the Wayne County Prosecutor. She is investigating whether Beatty and Kilpatrick committed perjury among other things. Kwame called her days before the story broke (out of the blue- they are not close) and said he promised to be neutral in her upcoming race for reelection. I don't know if he was trying to pacify her in anticipation of any investigation or not, but in her appearance on Friday, I think she took just the right tone. She's in charge. There will be an investigation. She will be making the call. She won't be influences by "anyone or anything." Um Kwame, I think she was talking to you. Look out.

Toni Morrison Endorses Obama
On another note, Toni Morrison endorsed Barack Obama in one of the most eloquent endorsements I have ever read. I ain't an Obama stan, but she put forth a good articulation for why some folks might be. A better explanation than the Obama acolytes who routinely visit this blog with vague ramblings and accusations. She ain't Toni Morrison for nothing. I am still mad she started this "Bill Clinton is a Black man" foolishness.

Sadly, even though you give both parties the wagging finger of shame, so far only Ms. Beatty has resigned.

There's speculation that the Mayor will weather this and even be allowed to finish his term for the sake of continuity and the momentum on some things he has done for the city of Detroit.

His resignation should have been tendered with hers, I believe.

Further double standard...short of jail time on the perjury charge, he will likely still have a lucrative future in politics, if only because of the possibility (likelihood) of his mother and his aunt pulling strings. "Strong women, indeed." I doubt the same is true for Ms. Beatty.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterDeesha

Yep. The mayor will be rewarded and Ms. Beatty will never be heard from again. Pretty disgusting.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterPamela

I was a Detroit resident for eight years during Kwame's term and saw this mess unfold up close. No doubt about it, Ms. Beatty's professional future is bleak and the piss poor black accountability on display here only serves to make black people appear foolish once again. Her career is effectively destroyed. She is out of a job, divorced, and branded as a certified home wrecker. Who is going to be willing to employ her in any position of public trust or responsibility again (er, other than Gina I guess)? What will be the quality of her professional relationships with other women and men in the future? She is out of a job right now, but Kwame's staff is going on the defense of him and the drumbeat from the community has begun that he should not have to resign. I don't see anyone coming to Beatty's defense. If the excuses are good for him, they should be good for her. So its a double dose of poor accountability with a slather of sexist double standards on top. A sordid, pathetic mess, top to bottom.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAaron & Alaine

I think you give Ms. Beatty far too much credit. The Kilpatrick name was a huge advantage in Detroit. She had access to the mother's political machine and more importantly money donors. I don't think it would take a rocket scientist to get him in office. I wouldn't hire, marry her, nor, if I were a woman, let her near my SO.

I don't know if it such a double standard that she resigned and he didn't. Her resignation is easy to accomplish. But this requires a transition of power; setting up an interim admin; a special election; etc. There is party politics involved as well to complicate it. He and she are not on equal terms--they never were. And it isn't solely b/c he's male and she's female. he's a kilpatrick and she's not; he's an elected official and she's not. and yes, partly because he's male and she's not.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterdurtybertie

I agree with Aaron, except with Gina's willingness to give her a 'position of public trust'...

I'm pretty sure that she would receive a pretty darn chilly response from the women at WAOD, including Gina.

Frankly I find the whole situation bizarre and embarrassing. I just wish that people would stop this knee-jerk support of any negro who wants to be mayor. Sometimes we have to look deeper and occasionally pass them up on their offer.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSheCodes

Strong women or ghetto hood rats? Kwame is only perpetuating they cyclical trifling behavior taught to him by his parents, strong women not excluded.

He is a womanizing, arrogant, semi-skilled, pompous piece of excrement. His mother reminds me of the project mothers who get on television lamenting about how their son is a "good boy" despite the fact that he's a career criminal. Where is Kwame's father?

It's obvious that the male figures in his life were either absent or just plain sorry. He should have had the decency to at least be man enough to not screw up the life of Ms. Beatty.

Now Christine gets no pass either, but she was his EMPLOYEE, he took advantage of his authority in that relationship and Christine was all too willing to give her coochie as well as her good name to this punk.

I can't stand "chitlin' eatin" negroes and their ilk; this is just another sad example of what happens when stupid people are smart enough to pull the wool over people's eyes. Detroiters have only themselves to blame for voting Kwame the prick into office again.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterShane

This is why I say she will get the shaft. She did not have the power that her boss had over her. Not excusing her behavior but people in power have breaks that the rest of us do not have. Both of them need to disappear and/or at least offer to pay back some of the court costs to Detroit. One of my good friends lives in an adjacent town. She talks about just how embarassing this is as well as the economic costs to Detroit.

I came from the DC area where the mayor was filmed smoking crack in the early 90s while preaching about not using drugs. Even with his horrible characted he was reelected with everyone praising him.

I hope that the people in Detroit will have a spine and demand that due process is done. I won't be holding my breath.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterPamela

Pamela,

I live in DC right now and people still praise Marion Barry... even after being caught with crack and marijuana recently!

His legacy, despite the best efforts of Anthony Williams, Adrian Fenty, and Sharon Pratt-Kelly, is an ineffective, constipated, quasi-state, bureaucracy with many fellow crack heads at the helm of departments. Their reward for being lifetime, unqualified, civil servants will be a lucrative "gub'ment" pension to support them.

The whole reason DC is in such an abysmal state is due to the fact that our black brothers and sisters saw the opportunity to commit and engage in fraud. Sadly, not much has changed even with Fenty in charge.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterShane

I know many of the older folk that I knew growing up in the area have moved away. I guess the foolishness was just too much for them. They came from the south to DC to escape the racial problems there. Many of them have returned back home I assume partially because of the nonsense and fear that they had living in the area.

It's sad that the DC leadership is still as dispicable as when I lived there 30 years ago.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterPamela

this post is hilarious! That clip of his mother is priceless. I played it like 10x. lol

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered Commenteriman

It is clear that there is a double standard when it comes to men and women in these types of situations, Ms. Beatty was wrong and stupid, clearly. However, if she is held accountable for her actions then so should the mayor. But the black community will rally around him and throw the woman under the bus as always. This is not just an black phenomenon. It's an American phenomenon. Look what happened to Monica Lewinski. Though Clinton was almost impeached over the affair he had with her, he has gone on to have a successful career after his presidency, and from what I hear, Ms. Lewinski can't even find a job. She has not been able to move on from the incident. And neither will Ms. Beatty.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered Commentertasha212

Carlita needs to let Kwame go. Maybe an intervention is in order.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterKitty Glendower

Kitty,

Intervene for what? She has made a decision to stand by her trifling husband. Let her have the right to self-determination that she deserves.

Far be it from me or anyone else to tell her that she's an idiot for staying with the creme-de-la-crap of chitlin' eatin' negro cronyism.

To borrow a phrase from my grandmother "sometimes you gotta leave n!ggas like you find 'em and move on, chile."

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBLKSeaGoat

According to the Detroit Free Press, the mayor will be making an address at his CHURCH tomorrow evening to talk about his SEXUAL, EXTRA-MARITAL AFFAIR and the text message scandal.

His pastor, the great negro, J. Drew Sheard, will be there to be his co-signer and will corroborate Kwame's story that Jesus loves coochie and that's why he did it.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBLKSeaGoat

Yes I heard about this. I was so disgusted. I sent an article about this to my friend that lives in the area. It mentioned that he was going to church where I knew his pimp would probably support his nasty self. I did not write details about the article but I told her I was disgusted and that she would know when I got mad. I'm sure I will hear from her when she gets off work.

I guess we all should be singing the late Tammy Wynette's song Stand By Your Man about now. Let's all hurl together now. I'm sure that is exactly what anyone that hears that mess will feel like doing.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterPamela

As I blogged on this last night, I opined that the defense of Kwame was just getting ginned up. It is offensive, ludicrous and pathetic that he is going to stand defiant in a pulpit tomorrow night and make a case that he ought not step down, ought not to be removed, while the career of his paramour goes up in flames and she slips ignominiously off the scene. That his pastor is willing to enable this foolishness, indeed to provide a platform for it is simply appalling. Perhaps it could be justified if he were repentant, if this reflected a past indiscretion, a not to reoccur event (lets leave out the $9.5 million), but there are reports that just in the past week or two, Kwame has been seen in liaison with still another woman. He believes himself to be bulletproof because blacks in Detroit refuse to call him to account, to his shame and to ours. - Aaron

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAaron & Alaine

Pamela,

I feel you completely. I am floored and disgusted as well. Why desecrate the church with the details of his sexual escapades?

Why is J. Drew Sheard, a leader in the COGIC international, co-signing this type of behavior?

Biblically and legally, Karlita has the right to divorce Kwame. Do you think Elder Sheard or Karen Clark-Sheard will reach out to his wife and support her as much as they support her lecherous husband?

I still can't wrap my mind around the fact that a man who superficially admires strong women finds it so easily to take advantage of them.

(sidenote: I wonder how many girls he date raped while being A football star at FAMU).

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBLKSeaGoat

I think people have been too hard on Toni Morrison about the Clinton comments of 10 years ago. I have always believed that she said that in a very tongue and cheek manner. Bill Clinton himself laughed at the absurdity of the comment.

As for the Hip Hop Mayor and his_____(You Fill in the blank)another sad example of disgracing their families, gender and people. Maybe your right about Ms. Beatty in that she is trying to atone for what she has done, she at least resigned, unlike Kwame. Come on Brothers, lets get it together!

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered Commentermrshadow33

Mr Shadow,

Why does the the Pimp get the dignity of being addressed by his moniker and Ms. Beatty a "fill in the blank"?

He is the scum... I still maintain that even if Ms. Beatty threw herself at him (which given Kwame's trampish history), HE WAS IN AUTHORITY OVER HER AND HE CLEARLY ABUSED IT.

Power is attractive and I'm sure Kwame has a very active sexual appetite, but is DOES NOT abrogate him from honoring his wife by keeping his d@ck in his pants.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBLKSeaGoat

I did not know that his pastor was COGIC. I grew up in that denomination. When I left home at 17 to go to college I had enough sense to leave that denomination NEVER TO RETURN. Men could do anything they wanted to with no bad consequences at all unless it touched the church's money. Women could do NOTHING wrong or they were put before the church to apologize for brining shame to the church. I get furious just thinking about those days. If this man is like the 'pastors' I saw growing up I expect nothing less that atta boy, he's just weak, needs support, etc. UGH

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterPamela

Pamela,

I share your experience. I remember in COGIC how they would use a man-made disciplinary tool called silencing to punish people in the church for sinning or backsliding.

As a supposed act of contrition and an open rebuke by the church, people were forced to sit on a designated pew, where they were unable to participate in ANY part of the church service as penance for their sinful offense.

The pastor determined how extensive the silencing punishments were and how long they would last. The most common offenses that warranted silencing were homosexuality and fornication. As a result, many women who got pregnant by men in the church were "silenced" while the men got to go one as if nothing happened.

When I inquired about the sexism and lack of fairness applied in this silencing crap, I was told that the woman bore the shame of the sin because God designed it that way from the beginning of man.

I am NOT surprised at COGIC's response to a womanizing adulterous man. Just disappointed.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBLKSeaGoat

Kwame is a man-child (has a man's body, but a child's mind). Is this what happens when a mother nurses her child too long? It's time for him to get off the milk and start eating solid food.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered Commentertryexcellence

I have some sympathy for Christine Beatty because I think she was just used and thrown away. Maybe she initially got some benefits from her association with Kilpatrick, but not enough to offset what's happening now. She was just a link on his chain of fools. Kilpatrick's recent tramping in North Carolina proves that.

Yes, her career is ruined. She will probably have to legally change her name and seriously relocate in order to truly move on. The impact on her children is beyond describing.

Married man + ANY woman = woman loses. Always, always, always. Did someone not tell her, or did she just not believe?

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterdeborah

@tasha212

My sentiments exactly! I've alway's mantained that Bill Clinton should be hiding under a rock because of the Monica Lewinski situation. He ABUSED his power and then threw Monica Lewinski under the bus. Black folks had his back BIG TIME through that debacle and here is year latter acting like a pitt bull for his wife's bid for presidency after he DISCRACED the office of the president. He should be hiding under a rock somewhere. In any other proffesional situation, what he did would have been called sexual harrasment. But alas, a lowly woman was given the scarlett A to wear and loss her career, while he rised from the ashes like a phoenix. And now Hillary has organizations like N.O.W endosorsing her while she's using this man's record to run on. Doesn't say much for his or her stance on woman's issues IMO! This is the classic double standard.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered Commenteriman

Spoke with some of our friends in the Motor City tonight and perhaps we don't have to feel that sorry for Beatty. Kwame's father is saying that ain't nothing changing, and Kwame's staff are saying he is not going anywhere. Word also is that Beatty will lie low for 6 months or so and resurface somewhere else and that she is already getting offers. Beatty is known to be a smart political operative and there are others coming after her. This is the utterly corrupt Detroit system at work and Kwame is going to ride this scandal out too. I predict right now that Kwame will not leave office.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAaron & Alaine

Well, I'm in the Motor City--was born here and have lived around here for almost all of my life and have watched this scenario (and others like it) unfold.

Beatty is the BIG loser in this picture. The sexism that runs so deeply through much of Detroit's Black community insures she will never have the same range of options to move beyond this that will be available to the mayor.

By the way, the newly appointed Chief of Staff owed $9,000 in back property taxes on the day he was appointed. A longtime "friend" of the mayor, this gentleman had to rush a $9,000 check over to the county treasurer's office once the media got hold of his tax records.

January 29, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterdeborah

Black women and girls can not continue to shoulder the moral responsibility for our community alone. Black men must be held accountable and not praised as pimps and players when they act unmorally. We can not tell our daughters to say no when training our sons to be wolves, telling them they're the man if they get a lot of women, no matter the cost to the woman's life or reputation. In our schools and community, the message be changed to a real man proctects his community, protects the females members of his community and doesn't take advantage of women just because he is physcially stronger or she is vunerlable.

January 30, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterPagann

I watched Kilpatrick on local TV last night (with his wife by his side) as he asked the city to forgive him and as he announced he had no intention of stepping down because he had too much work to do.

His continued apologies for his "mistake" was a veiled reference to Beatty.

Yes, she was the BIG loser.

Kilpatrick keeps his job (for now, at least), his marriage, his kids, etc. Beatty is out of sight without any public comment or chance to redeem herself.

Detroit has a long history of corrupt mayors. Two previous mayors (from the 1950s and earlier) went to jail after leaving office. Hmmmm...

January 31, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterdeborah

The video of his speech is online to watch. I watched it after I got home last night. Maybe the law will get him for lying under oath. If not he will get away with it while Beatty is shamed for the rest of her life.

Women always lose in situations like this. She had two strikes against her: (1) She was sleeping with her boss which could have given her advantage over other employees. (2) She chose to sleep with a married man with children. I hope women are taking a look at this and hopefully will make good choices on who they will date. Her life is ruined. He will probably get an atta boy. From what little I have heard this is not a one-time thing but a pattern. If that is true he is being rewarded for his foolishness yet again.

Yes MEN in powerful positions can get away with anything.

January 31, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterPamela

I am just seeing the tape of Kwame's momma... my, my, my!

You gave me a chuckle!

You are right...Kwame better watch out because all that was done in the dark SHALL COME to light! He will leave office in complete, total, unseen-before-disgrace. Keep watching Detroit.
