TMZ Attacks Black Women at BET Awards. Should I care?

Gina, The Blogmother
I am torn folks. So very. very. torn. I vowed not to mention the Black Exploitation Television awards on THIS blog, but then in my weekly Google search for blog postings about Black women, I ran across this post. By Jasmyne ( Great blog by the way!) called TMZ.com Host to Online Race War Over BET Music Awards Write Up...Beyonce Performance Labeled as "Roboho". I too read this TMZ post called BET Fashion Fright Night about the fashion selections at the BET. I was tempted not to link to Jasmyne's post because ( and I feel bad about it) I didn't have any sympathy for those who chose to attend that exhibition of foolishness.
Personally, I was more disturbed by this post about Serena Williams where they imply that a Black female professional athlete is inhuman and some type of "extremely dangerous" cyborg.
Jasmyne is also disturbed by the comments on the thread about the BET fashions, but I am more concerned about the comments on the thread about Serena.
Needless to say, plenty of Black bloggers threw their own slings and arrows at the Fashion selections at the BET Awards ( YBF, Bossip, C&D, and Concrete Loop). Many of those same bloggers have their share of posts gunning for Serena as well
Y'all know I cop to my hypocrisy. Should I be AS offended that TMZ called Beyonce a "Roboho" as I am about the fact that they called Serena "extremely dangerous". I was ticked off at the Serena Williams post, but was meh about the BET fashions post. Jasmyne had a point though. I told y'all I was conflicted. Either way, look at the captions and comments on both stories and tell me what you think. Perhaps one of you can articulate the outrage I should probably feel if I didn't think Debra Lee and her Viacom overseers were the devil ( Just Kidding!Well, maybe not). In other words, I have to outsource my outrage over TMZ's bashing of the African American women at the BET Awards. I just can't muster up any legitimate outrage for some reason.
For comparison's sake take a look at some of our "Greatest Hits" posts. here are some of my personal favorites: Should Hip Hop be Eradicated?, New Loyalty Oath for the Black Blogosphere?, DL Hughley is Wrong: White Folks May Have a Point, Where in the World is Rev. Al- Sharpton Watch Day 01, Sharpton Watch is Over!, OH Snap: Video of protesters confronting Dieon Sanders and Dl Hughley in Ft. Worth. and my inaugural post: After Imus: Now What. Normally I have no problem being indignant! HAHAHA

I don't care. There are far more important issues for us to handle. I have problems with BET period - and anything associated with it.
So, I don't have to like TMZ. I never go there.
TMZ does not surprise me at all. full of confused racists (who watch BET vigorously) and oversexed teens.
I don't care either, but I am trying to figure out why. Y'all know I am quick to take offense. But why not in this case? i am trying to do some self analysis on this. For the sake of consistency.
Seriously, I can't take offense to anything written about BET...they feed and ignorance about black folks in the world, and anyone who shows up on there opens themselves up to ridicule. Additionally, fashion critics target everybody...BET just gave them ample opportunity.
As for TMZ...that site is purely for shock value. Certain media outlets kill me bringing on Harvey whathisface because something "broke" on his site about some celebrity.
I think we shouldn't worry so much about what a few misguided people say on lame websites...and keep focusing on the big picture.
how can you blast D.L. Hughley as hard as you did when he never even insinuated the word "Ho" and then even pretend to be conflicted about what TMZ said? I gues Beyonce and Eve don't qualify as your daughters.
Guess it's easier to attack the Black man than the good white folks over at TMZ. You have officially lost all credibility with me.
If that is all it took to lose credibility with YOU then I didn't have much to begin with. I could have completely ignored what TMZ said. The question I asked was WHY I wasn't outraged. So if my attempt at self reflection bothers you then tough. I am woman enough to admit that I am not perfect, you clearly are not.
"If that is all it took to lose credibility with YOU then I didn't have much to begin with"
Not true at all, for while I had some philosophical differences with some of your positions, you HAD 100% complete credit from me for being consistent.
Now I can't even count on that. And in the face of your onslaught against what I considered to be a minor player (the nappy headed D.L. and his personal preference for beauty) versus TMZ who not once, but twice alluded to your daughters as little more than prostitutes, your lack of commitment to your own convictions leaves me completely baffled. In fact it leaves me little recourse other than to wonder if the racial makeup of the actors has anything to do with your "meh".
Perhaps I could have been more sensitive and given you credit for at least questioning yourself. Perhaps you could have given Akon credit for at least not knowing that his "victim" was underage. You were not so charitable in your critique of his apology. But, as they say, an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind, so let's move past that.
As far as perfection, people of good conscience never expect that of anyone. I consider myself to be such a person, and as such neither expect perfection nor profess to it.
But you have established a leadership position on a platform of unwavering and unconditional demands for respect for your daughters. To now lead your followers in a chorus of it's o.k. because it's BET (the attack was not made on BET or on fashion, it was made on Beyonce and EVE), and allowing an exception for TMZ because they are "purely for shock value" according to Zeta, appears to me the an excess of hypocrisy that I would be remiss not to mention to you.
Consider this then simply a reply to your question of why, and try not to be too miffed at me because I didn't praise the good parts of you when I pointed out the flaws. I do in fact think it's a very laudable position to call out anyone who refers to two supremely gifted athletes as animals.
Unfortunately, I'm not surprised at anything that happens on BET. The whole network is a bunch of foolishness that feeds on a mentality of ignorance. I happen to catch part of the show last year when Beyonce and Jay-Z were "performing" and was disgusted. The name should be changed to Ignorant Television because there is nothing "entertaining" or "black" about that station. The network does not represent the essence of the black community, only a subset of stupidity that tries to make "black" synonymous with the foolishness they call "entertainment".
It's a shame how society promotes and encourages many of the talentless people that call themselves "artists". More like "artless". I will continue to not watch that network of foolishness.
I never said it was OKAY. In fact intellectually i KNOW what TMZ said was wrong. I just am not emotionally invested in it for some reason. You were looking for a foothold and I gave you one.
I'm a stickler for intellectual honesty, so I must admit, none of you said it was o.k. The prevailing theme actually appears to be that attacking BET is more uplifting than standing up for you daughters.
I was looking for a foothold? I guess it's time for me to be introspective. That's a rather harsh response to what I thought as a very fair critique. Why would I be predisposed to look for something negative about you. But perhaps I was a bit harsh in my original post. You didn't lose all credibility. I still give you credit for being willing to stand up and call out any Black man who verbally or physically attacks your daughters. But as a Black man who has supported your efforts to protect and defend MY daughter, I did fell somewhat betrayed by your casual lack of concern in this case.
I've commented to your posts before, and all I try to do is add an element of logic and balance to the discussion when I feel it's lacking. Because I challenge you, I am looking for a foothold?
Are you trying to alienate me? Do you want me to go off like some keyboard commandos do? Would that give you more of a reason to discount my humble commentary on your blog? Are you perhaps lashing out at me because you feel attacked by me and this is your logical response?
I'm not attacking you. I am just calling it the only way I can see it. In this case you decided not to make a big deal about your daughters. You have made a much bigger deal in other cases, cases where the perpetrator of the attack on your daughters was a Black male, cases where the offense was arguably far less egregious. How then would you think i should take this? Maybe you hold the Black man to a higher standard? I don't have a problem with that per se, just be upfront and honest about it. I'm left to speculate about your ulterior motives. Being Black in America, my default position is that Black and white has something to do with it when there is unequal treatment in similar situations
In my humble opinion, that's not stretching to find a problem with you. It's pointing out a glaring double standard. But you probably didn't need my input on that as you have already copped to being inconsistent. As to why you are that way, only you can search your soul and answer that question.
Lashing out? Okay clearly you have overlayed a level of emotion or intent on the word that I am writing.
Believe you me. if I was LASHING OUT at your comments YOU would know.
I ain't trying to alienate anyone. i don't care enough about you to try to alienate you. What an idiotic and emotionally unstable-sounding response. You response is so disproportionate with mine that THAT is what makes me discount what you are saying.
Like I said. You want to be pissed off in perfection, have at it!
i ain't perfect. never claimed to be. Maybe you wish I had ignored TMZ comments completely instead of bringing them to the attention of the 500 people who have read about them on this site since I put them up.
So if you want to turn into a keyboard crazy, that is your choice, but yes, your opinion means very little to me at this point because you clearly have an agenda. Now who is being intellectually dishonest?
Our first effort should be to get a black woman on 106 and park. It seems foolish to have Black Entertainment Television and not have a black woman on the number 1 show.
I don't care either, but I am trying to figure out why. Y'all know I am quick to take offense. But why not in this case? i am trying to do some self analysis on this. For the sake of consistency
For me, it's been the consistent dripping of poison into the community through our children that BET has YET take responsibility for that just makes me not be bothered.
The BET Awards is a shin and grin event that encapsulates everything that this blog was created around, IMO.
I think you know that, and that's another reason for your inaction.
