DL Hughley is Wrong- White folks might have a point.
Monday, May 7, 2007 at 7:08PM
The Blogmother "There were some nappy headed women on the team and those are some of the ugliest women I have ever seen in my life.” DL HUGHLEY on Jay Leno.
Where is the outcry from mainstream media, the African American community, or all these people that called for Imus' head on a platter? D.L's last show got canceled so there isn't anyone to boycott. Was it really worth the laugh? Those young women are somebody's daughters. Any ideas?
How can you be complaining about illiteracy rates in the African American community and the state of black America in one breath and then tear down and malign young women who took up the challenge to pursue higher education.
The Rutgers Women's Basketball team members are beautiful! When the world gave them an opportunity to rage and unleash a fury toward Imus, they didn't. That's beautiful. When they had the eyes of the world on them, the exhibited grace and dignity. That's beautiful. When they had every reason and opportunity to malign and attack Imus, they forgave him. That's beautiful. D.L. Hughley's latest venture was canceled so he tried to piggyback on a painful period in our history by attempting to get a laugh on the cheap and THAT. WAS. UGLY!

D.L. Hughley is a clown...He makes black men look like damn fools.
I didn't like his Minstrel Show on BET either.
He's a clown, but where are the voices outside of the black blogosphere speaking out about this?
Oh my goodness, I absolutely hate him now. How can someone who was illerate as an adult talk malign about someone else? I want to do something, but I don't know how we can get the message out that what he said is unacceptable.
Maybe, we can find out if he is doing stand up and get the schedule, then start an online and radio campaign to inform others about what he said. For example, if he was going to perform in Chicago, IL tomorrow...people could call major radio stations in the city to inform them that we are boycotting his shows due to his ignorant comments.Anyway, its just a thought.
My homework assignment tonight is to find out what his latest venture is. I read somewhere that he might be doing something else on BET, a part of Viacom.
I'm really disappointed in that. Black women were insulted and he is doing the same exact thing when he knows how much it hurt people. Makes me think differently about him. He's asking for it. I didn't hear about this before now.
Idiotic! I never thought he was funny before anyway. Minstrel-for-hire.
We need to track him from city to city until he is hounded out of the country. He is a disgrace, not only to black men, but the human race.
I am working on something now. IHe has a new BET show. I am sure he is working on something else. I want to know where all the folks who were screaming up and down about Imus are.
Lighten up everyboby. Its called freedom of speech. Get over it. Jesus Christ...I don't care for Imus, D.L Hughley, or the rutgers basketball team...but they have the right to say what they want to say...regardless if its considered offensive to some. Serously Get a Grip people!
What in the world did he smoke before he graced that seat? Ignorance pure ignorance, does he have any daughters, becuz this is going to slap him rt. back in his face.
White Folks don't have to talk about us, just put us before a microphone, a camera or any venue with media attention. We will destroy our ownselves.
Stupid, ignorant!
wow, I can't believe I have not heard one thing about that, that's one hell of a low blow. I understand that freedom of speech exists but why, when there are so many better targets (Paris Hilton anyone?) would you feel the need to say that about those women?
MR. JINGGLES!!
He is a prime exammple of the mind state of our black boys and men today, they would of never allowed him to say that to a group of non black females , and he is disrespecting his mother when he made that comment! He , is showing his inferiority to the white man, by making mockery of his kind(for he was breaded by a black woman)there is no excuse for this type of self hatred and slandering.I am a young 17 yr old female, biracial, and look black, my youngr sister relly looked up tp the girls on that team, and plays ball her self, she is full african american, and not the girly type, and she is beautiful, now how do he or Imus thinks she feels about that ,huh? FOR why would she now want to pursue a sport where young ladies get singled out on nat,.tv for doing nothing? THE POWERS TO BE, dont care about us , and now our fathers mock us , where do we stand?
Let me assure you Shanny that you all are loved more than DL Hughley. Some people stoop pretty low in pandering for laughs. Mr. Hugeley needs a cold shoulder welcome wherever he goes. And, remember also, it was Jay Leno who was the "setup man" for Hughley untoward comments. Maybe we can turn to another channel whenever Leno comes on, to show him a piece of our disgust for his complicity in pouring salt in the wound of the African-American community.
I don't think it's Jleno to blamebecause heinotially looked startled and confusedwhen hughley started his rant and when the audience panned out it was like a breathe of fresh air to him .D.L lost respect from me absolute idiot .He did not have words of encouragement or wisdom all he had was ignorance .I feel sorry for his stupidity because I could tell he majority of the audience was laughing at him rather than with him ,
I just heard what this D.L. Hughley said. There are so many fronts that African-American Women must fight and one of those front is how African-American men view what is beauty, what is sexy, what is sensual and what they consider to be whorish. All of the above when you deal with certain African-American men can be a contradiction of terms. I feel that the old code of being silent when someone in our community steps out of line must end. Respect must be a decorated officer in any battle we engage in. And, we are at war, in the community as well as with outsiders.

YES - AND BECAISE OF FREEDOM OF SPEECH EVERYONE ALSO HAS A RIGHT TO SAY HOW PISSED OFF THEY ARE WHEN SOMEONE SAYS SOMETHING STUPID!
Exactly Liberal Mama. People who cling to free speech seem to think that the freedom to speak is a one way street. Um No, the point is that we have our fights with words and not weapons. So inherently free speech means being able to be free to respond to what we find offensive.
You all need to lighten up. Its comedy--that's all. What comedy doesn't make fun of something or someone?
Also, if what he said is so offensive, why hasn't one person addressed the words that he said? Are you all saying that there were no nappy headed women on that team? Haven't you ever seen the "Happy to be Nappy" books? Yes, we as black people have a certain type of hair--stop acting like our hair is something to be ashamed of!!! Also, he said those were some ugly women on that team. Yes, you may disagree, but isn't beauty in the eye of the beholder? If he believes they were ugly, is that something that deserves him being boycotted?
David you are entitled to your opinion. We're entitled to OURS.
IT WAS A JOKE…people are just trying to make an example of him. Ok, let’s boycott…every rapper, every black comedian, hell… every black female comedienne. Why is it that Michael Richards can perform the DAY AFTER calling a black man in the audience a nigger, but now everyone wants to boycott, DL? Looks like some one has their priorites twisted. If anything… I respect DL for defending his right to tell a dayum joke. That is what he does, that is his job.
Yes, LET's boycott them all. That is a wonderful idea.
Yes Hugeley was wrong, You dont say these things about anybody. He doesnt even have the class to apologize. Don Imus had the class to apologize. yes, i agree that the girls could have unleashed fury on imus, but didnt and that waas beautiful. They forgave him. i agree that was beautiful. However, don Imus also exhibited class in going to the girls and apologizing. Al Sharpton and other blacks didnt forgive him, and kicked as Imus low as they could. That was ugly as hell on the part of Sharpton and other blacks. . And hypocritical for a preacher to not forgicve, when Imus did everything he could to apologize and make things right. Hugeley was wrong in what he said. All i have to say is , guess what? Now it is a black man, a member of the African American race who blacks are hacked at. So hallulujah. let the blacks fight it out now over one of their own race saying something stupid. this time there is no white person to pick on , So you blacks, just fight it out like hell. And if Hugely apologizes, do what you didnt have the class to do with Imus . Forgive the man. Thanks.
D. L Hughley has been posted on my site howard53545.wordpress.com as the House Negro of the week for saying those awful things about my sisters. Field Negro also posted on his site. We will keep the pressure on this house negro but he has always been a house negro
... ... not only does he go on Jay Leno and boldly disrespect these women AGAIN, but BET turns around and gives this man his own show... it is becoming downright profitable to disrespect women... DAMN BET !!

D.L. Hughley's comments were ignorant. Does he not realize that he is being used as an instrument of genocide for a laugh?
Is there any other race that endures riducle for their hair besides people of african descent? DL was incredibly insenstive and practically a traitor for his lame attempt to capitalize on the hype. Lets ignore him and his desperate measures to return to the spotlight. Bad publicity is still publicity!
There is some underlining racisim in the words spoken here...and I am not speaking of DL.
You're going to bitch fit over a JOKE?! Mind you a joke made by a comedian .... it's kind of what they do it's meant to be offensive it's meant to be crude a vast majority of the time this is what comedians do. He is one of the best comedians out there.
And what he said wasn't even that mean he said they were ugly ...
It's hilarious that people are or were trying to boycott him because of it.
Get a life people.
Quick ping on the eve of the NAN/Sharpton 20-city protest/decency initiative to say I LOVE your blog, and find it to be 'spot on' with everything from your Sharpton Watch to your 'big picture' priorities and insights...I'll need to link to it tmrw. no doubt.
If you click on our 'misogyny & racism' category on the Shaping Youth blog you'll find some like-minded thinking, from this lily white blonde.
p.s. I also agree w/you that the best way to 'make change' is much more than spotlight chasing, it's to "go for the gold" as I wrote here during the Imus mess:

You're in my feed reader now, spunky editorial style AND erudite prose, woohoo! Sound off, rock on, make change...keep blogging.
How could the NAACP let him host the Image Awards?
I am shocked that DL was given this opportunity with CNN. I used to be a fan; however, his disparaging remarks in defense of the Don Imus controversy regarding the Rutgers University Women's Basketball Team was a disgrace. If Don Imus was reprimanded than so should DL Hughley. Just because he happens to be African American and a comedian does not give him a pass. How would he feel if someone called the women in his family, "nappy headed hoes"?
I think some of you should not be so uppidy. How many times have you all said that your own hair is nappy or some of these things:
look at that girl with that nappy hair, hm.. she thinks she is cute with that nappy hairnor watch something like Madia who acts out some of the related genre in her movies. Don't it make you laugh? Isn't the general definition of nappy kinky hair or hair undone? Let's try to consider more Critical issues that DL says or even the guest on his show say such as: Minorities should support homosexuals because they are going through what we went through in the past. Now that's an issue that I think needs to be debated because in my opinion it is not the same because skin color can not be discreet and you cannot wake up one morning and say hey, I think I will be this or that color. Homosexuals do have the ability to make adjustments to prevent predjudice including hiding sexuality if needed to or even change to bi-sexual and even heterosexual. Maybe it is not the best argument but hopefully it sheds some light on why people of color struggles for equality is not quite the same as homosexuals.
