Baroprah Mania Part Deaux: Oprah Hits it Out of the Park on Behalf of Obama...Civil Rights Industrial Complex Attacks Obama Again (Andrew Young )

This blog is about African American women in popular culture so we couldn't ignore Oprah basically taking over the airwaves today with her speech on behalf of Barack Obama. Part I

Part II She Throws It Down!(watch for the Billary digs)

She accomplished an amazing feat, she got me to sit through an Obama Speech in its entirety. I am beginning to wonder if Obama's Democratic National Convention Speech was one of those rare occasions when a politician is "in the zone" that can never be repeated. As far as I am concerned this was bigger than a keynote at the Democratic National Convention and Obama, took probably 10 minutes to hit his stride. Oprah is gifted and her speech was great , but when Obama hit the stage he literally took a bucket of cold water and threw it on the fire Oprah lit. I was about to turn away from his speech when someone in the audience passed out. He ended up getting it together, but seriously, he needs to bring it tomorrow in SC.

CNN's Candy Crowley declares that Oprah has a future as a campaign speech writer:
There were a couple of signs, but no fireworks, no hang gliders, just Oprah and Obama and thousands of their closest friends packed into a cavernous arena in downtown Des Moines. Gayle King (Oprah's BFF) told one of the women seated next to her that Oprah was up until three in the morning writing her speech introducing Obama. She told people backstage she was nervous.I asked one of his advisers if the campaign had any input. "Nope," he said. "All the Big O."

If that's true, Winfrey has a future. It was a great speech, and she is a gifted speaker.CNN.COM

I agree Candy.

If you want to review the throw down we had two weeks ago regarding my response to the article called "Michelle Obama Urges Black Women to Vote for Her Husband", you can go here.

Note to Sherri Shepard, I hope you were taking notes.

Speaking of National Embarrassments...Andrew Young Pans Obama and Says Bill Clinton is "just as Black as Obama."

Isn't it time for him to go away to the home? The CRIC(civil rights industrial complex) is seriously losing it. Between bloggers and Obama, they are being driven mad right in front of our very eyes.Just STOP already.

Oprah was a natural. She has that 'connection thing' with the audience. That's what's gotten her over 2 billion dollars. She certainly didn't hurt Obama with what she said.

About Andrew Young:

The icing on the cake for me was this:

"Bill is every bit as black as Barack," he said. "He has probably gone out with more black women than Barack."

For that alone, Andy Young needs to go stand in the Handkerchief Heads for Hillary bleachers.

Negro, Please.

I think I understand what the man (Andrew Young?) was trying to say albeit humourously about bill being ever bit as black as Barack.

I think he was trying to say that they both "know" black America about the same.

Obama is black but comes from outside but he 'relates' to Black America; whereas Bill Clinton -is not white- but he seems to can 'roll' with Black America.

I don't know if all this is actually true because I don't keep up with the politics, but I think that is what he was saying.

Oprah was great! My interest just got perked!!

Andy Young continues to become increasingly irrelevant to me. Bow out gracefully, you old coot! Stop that racial pandering bullsh*t! Sadly, many black people think this way and nothing could be further from the truth.

How is it that some of the activists who were once leaders in the fight for black equality are now publicly espousing some of the very ideas that are currently holding us back as a people. Andrew Young pulled off an awesome hat trick here. Let’s look at the damaging racial chestnuts Mr. Young spouted off, shall we?

- Bill Clinton is an honorary black man. Apparently, all it takes to be a black man is to be born in poverty, to not know your daddy, to be a philanderer and to know how to lead a mean Soul Train line.
- If you do not have the prescribed black background, then you cannot be part of the black community and you certainly cannot lead it. The preferred background includes growing up with black parents (preferably in poverty), exclusively dating black partners and knowing the civil rights old heads that are in Andrew Young’s Rolodex.
- Black people do not have to practice racial sensitivity or indeed know anything about other races and cultures. Everything I have read says Lolo Seotoro, Obama’s stepfather, was Indonesian. To Andrew Young, he was “a Chinese.” WTF?

What do we have to do to get some new spokespersons for the black community?

I must say Lady O did a fantastic job and it definitely kept me listening and willing to investigate Obama further as a candidate. I was really starting to lose hope in him.... Oprah's speech definitely evoked what I think they were going for.

Andy Young. Not worth commenting on.

Total co-sign Rikyrah. I could not believe my ears. I thought that Andrew Young was better than that.

I am co-signing with you too Tami. It's just unbelievable isn't it?

What happened to preparing and training the next generation - and then passing the torch? Business and political leaders have been doing that for generations. You have Al Gore, George Bush 41 and our current president, the son and grandson of CT Senator and Wall Street banker Prescott Bush.)

That is rarely seen with us - passing the torch (and actual power/mobility) onto the sons AND daughters of the struggle. There are notable exceptions like Earl Graves and his sons at Black Enterprise, Harold Ford, Jr., etc.

That's part of the reason why the Barack Obamas, Cory Bookers and the Adrian Fentys are able to rise despite jealous attacks from the very leaders that were supposedly fighting for us to have Barack Obamas and Cory Bookers back in the 50s and 60s. I thought that was the goal but the comments and actions of Jesse Jackson ("Barack is acting white") former Newark, NJ mayor Sharpe James ("Cory Booker is a "faggot white boy" and a "Jew") and now Andrew Young assailing Barack Obama with this nonsense...

What can I say? I've voted for Booker twice and I can't wait to vote for Obama on February 5. The "civil rights industrial complex" will just have to get over it because it's a new day!

That was a great speech. Oprah has a great amount of credibility and influence, I think she will surely be able to turn a lot of undecided voters on to Obama. I still don't understand why there's so many people who don't like Oprah. Some of the things I read about on these blogs are terrible. I think the fact that she's a self made black woman who seems to genuinely enjoy her life and is unapologetic for it, just drives people crazy. Even her philanthropy is criticized. It's crazy. And I'm not even one of those Oprah devotees. There's a lot about her that actually annoys me, but I still respect the woman that she is.

I don't even know how to address Andrew Young and his foolishness. I hate hearing black people talking down to other black people. How stupid do we think each other are? That was just insulting on so many levels.

I was for Hillary up until those "kindergarten" revelations regarding Obama's desire to be president.

Out of the GOP, I am for Ron Paul, as far as the Dems go, Barak. And that is sad, because I'm from Chicago and never really thought much of Barak, but he is surely the lesser of all evils in this thing of ours...

Thanks for the Young video post. I won't even comment on that nonsense. They should've asked him about being that deal he had with Wal-mart (OOPS!)

I don't think people get it. If Barack doesn't win, there will NEVER be a Black President.

Do you really think they will ever give a Black man (or woman) a stage opp like Barack got in 2004? Nope.

They will NEVER do that again in our lifetimes. They'll be thinking

If he takes Iowa & New Hampshire, it's on.

My wife is black...she can't stand Hillary. I know a lot of sisters that feel the same way.

I have a major problem with Bill Clinton being called black-period. It is a major insult in my mind. I really dislike it when he is called "The First Black President." He is who he is. A white man from Arkansas.

I'm unable to view youtube clips at work, can someone please post the link to the Andrew Young comments so that I can send it to my entire crew so that everyone can know how irrelevant he has apparently become? Thanks!

It's been a long time since I got goosebumps from listening to a speech at a political rally. Oprah is an immensely talented orator. I can see why practically everything she touches can turn to gold. For a moment, I almost thought she was running for president.

My repost from Bossip. Excuse my language but I was PO'd when I 1st read this story:

Wow. My Stupid N#gga radar is going berzerk right now. Can’t believe Barack’s Blackness is being determined by how many Black women he’s dated. WTF is wrong with Blk ppl?

& Blk ppl need to hop off Bill Clinton’s d#ck already. He put more Blk men in jail than Reagan & he was a strong proponent of the War on Drugs which disproportionately placed more Blk men in jail, placed crack at a higher level than coke when it comes to charges & sentences, & locked up addicts rather than rehabilitated them.

& f#ck Hillary. She was the last idiot standing supporting this quagmire of a war & wised up when she found out she was alone. F#ck her for supporting this blood for oil war.

@andrew young
how embarrassing for him. how negroish. how high-school. what a crab in the barrel. the ignorance and arrogance of his comments really make it hard to respect him as an elder.
@oprah
phenomenal, of course.
@barack
despite my misgivings and concerns about his positions on certain international policiy issues, if he secures the nomination i would vote for him becuase i support most of his domestic agenda.

Andrew Young explains why he is not supporting Obama
By Robert "Rob" Redding Jr.
Publisher

Dec. 05, 2007, 11:00 a.m. - Former Atlanta Mayor and Ambassador Andrew Young explained why he does not support Sen. Barack Obama to win the Democratic nomination for president - until "2016."

"It is not a matter of being inexperienced," Young told an Atlanta crowd this fall. "It is a matter of being young. There is a certain matter of maturity ... You have to have a protective network around you... Leadership requires suffering. And I would like to see Barack's children get a little older, see, because they're going to pick on them."

He made the remarks after being asked by a crowd member about the Illinois Democrat at a "Newsmakers" event held in Atlanta.

"I want Barack to be president," he responded with a long pause, "....in 2016."

"Barack Obama does not have the support network yet to get to be president...," he said. He reflected on his days serving as one of many lieutenants to Martin Luther King Jr.

He also said that while Obama's rival Sen. Hillary Clinton is surrounded by quite a few black advisors Obama has very few.

"To put a brother in there by himself is to set him up for crucifixion," he said.

He also joked that author Toni Morrison may have been on to something when she referred to former President Bill Clinton as the "first black president."

"Bill is every bit as black as Barack," he said. "He has probably gone out with more black women than Barack."

Young's remarks come as Obama is battling with Hillary for support in the black community.

Rev. Jesse Jackson, who had endorsed Obama, has been critical of the presidential candidate in recent weeks.

Rev. Al Sharpton has said that he has not decided if he will support Obama.

I could've sworn Andrew Young was dead.

December 10, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterTekoa

Didn't AJ ridicule Obama for his upbringing and racial background and then turned around and called him a "brotha?"

"To put a brother in there by himself is to set him up for crucifixion"

One word - senseless
