I don’t want to see NAACP National President, Benjamin Jealous holding a placard anywhere NEAR a Rupert Murdoch operation until he finds time to have an intern issue a public statement condemning Cleavland NAACP President George Forbes for supporting and defending a RACIST attack on a state senator, Nina Turner. Or are racist attacks only racist attacks when directed at Black men?
A black-owned and operated newspaper in Cleveland has grabbed national headlines for running a cartoon that portrays Ohio State Senator Nina Turner as Aunt Jemima. As you can guess, the Call & Post is not a fan of Nina Turner and vehemently disagrees with her on important legislation passed by voters last month. Black Voices
You can’t purport to be a “civil rights” organization with a long ans storied history of fighting racist imagery ( back before they lost their minds) and then turn around and have a local president using the same imagery.

Call and inquire as to whether the National Office supports this kind of attack on Black women. Of course we know they DO support these kinds of attacks, but you might as well get them on record. No. Moral. Authority!

I couldn’t believe this Gina. I had to go back and make sure Sen. Turner was not Republican. They are doing this to one of their own. It wouldn’t be right for anyone to do this to a black woman like they did Dr. Condi Rice (remained silent while a white radio talk show host called her all kinds of Mammy) but they are showing me how important black women are to them.
I tried to discuss this NAACP mentality and A. Sharpton behavior to a bw friend and she accused me of having an ax to grind against black men. She sooooo didn’t get it and I don’t have time to try to convince those who just won’t see what is in front of them.
I hope Mr. Jealous sees the hypocrisy here as it is in-your-face clear. Now it is a wait and see. They will get my written protest, but I am not hopeful.
I wrote about the Aunt Jemima cartoon yesterday, however, I wasn’t aware of the NAACP Cleveland Branch angle. Thank you for putting it out here on front street. I plan to give the NAACP office a call to see what they have to say.

The Call and Post is owned by Don King? THE Don King? I don’t understand; even if she is a bad person, or a terrible leader, corrupt, etc., then just state her shortcomings, call for a protest in front of her office, if she is an elected official, organize a recall, but WTH, using the Aunt Jemina figure is just way too much.

Thank you so much for picking this up from Carmen. I don’t know Nina Turner but there is a lot of support for condemning the editorial cartoon and condemning the idea that we can’t disagree within a community that, at times, has needed to be monolithic – whether it’s women, a religious minority (I’m thinking of Jews who call Jews who don’t support Israel 100% “anti-Semites”) or any other ingroup thing – but still has got to support development of our own voices. Don’t we WANT to raise people to be leaders? Anyway – thanks.

I understand where you are coming from but understand that many people feel that Obama is selling out the American people. If a black publication can get away with this without protest then a white publication should get away with racist depictions of the president without protest…including the New York Post. Black people should give the respect we fell we deserve.

Have you even read Uncle Tom’s Cabin? Read it and then you’ll find out how stupid your actions are. It’s very noticeable how people that go around talking about Uncle Tom, Aunt Jamima, house negro, field negro really don’t know what in hell they are talking about.
They just mindlessly spout something they picked up from the “We as a people” fake militant dasheki wearing crowd and those types often don’t even have average intellect. So why repeat after them?
This is ridiculous!!! It is totally inappropriate to use a cartoon with racist images to show your disagreement or disapproval of a politicians policies.

I will definitely be giving the NAACP another call tomorrow. I saw this image but didn’t get a chance to write on it. As Jill above said, we are not monolithic as a community so we are allowed to disagree with each others politics and personal views without resorting to degrading racist stereotypes.
Unfortunately, I believe the both political parties play off of this kind of tomfoolery, all the while ignoring the constituencies that put them in office. As long as we continue playing ourselves in this fashion, we will never enact the kind of change we need in this country.
Doesn’t the NAACP denounce us using the N word to rebuke one another even when someone is acting like a true N? (you know what I mean) So if that is wrong, maybe Mr. Forbes can explain why is it okay for a black publication to use a racist image to criticized another black person? So if all bets are off can I go back to my favorite line from Chris Rock (I know how some feel him but it was priceless)…I love black folks but I can’t stand N___s! That would include the ones that uphold the bashing of a black woman for exercising her right to take an unpopular opinion. Take her to task as a politician. Call her out for letting the community down in your opinion. Campaign against her at election time but to stoop this low is rediculous.
Thank you Gina, for validating a belief that I have silently held for years. I know longer worship at the alter of THE HOLY BLACK MAN. Why is it okay for black men to portray black women in this manner? And, will blkchik please define, “selling out your people.”
