This week I attended a conference in Washington, DC and learned SO much. One of the speakers spoke about “The Double Bottom Line”
Double bottom line is a business term used in socially responsible enterprise and investment.
While all businesses have a conventional bottom line to measure their fiscal performance—financial profit or loss—enterprises which seek a second bottom line look to measure their performance in terms of positive social impact.Wikipedia
A fellow blogger, actually she’s more than a fellow blogger- she played a central role in an important moment of clarity online that LITERALLY changed my life for the BETTER! *FLASHBACK*
. But anywho, She’s started the Healthy Habbits Produce Coop.
…[T]he entire presidential election inspired me to do something that I’ve been wanting to do for a while which is open my own organic produce coop. So I begin a little hoping to get 20 families to participate and we got 40 and had to turn away 12. Be sure to stop by and pick up a recipe or two. Healthy Habbits Produce Coop.
Now she didn’t ask me to do this, but with all this “green” money floating around, she ought to be able to expand so she can accommodate as many families as are demanding her services. She’s learned a valuable lesson, that the barriers to entry for online businesses are LOW I would argue that they are none existent. However, like any other business, the barrier’s to expansion are much higher. So if you know about some foundations, “green” venture capitalists, or some stimulus money that is available to our cyber Sister, speak up. You don’t have to leave a comment, send an email or use the contact form above.
To all of you who are worried about the economy, whether you’ve lost your job, are worried about losing your job, or not worried at all, one really easy way to regain some “control” and take the edge off is to start a side hustle. Just because it starts small, doesn’t mean it has to stay small. Not only that, but there is 700 BILLION dollars of stimulus money coming out of the pipeline and I want at least 100 Black women who read this blog to go out for your share of your taxpayer money. Just do it!
PS. Kim, when you make your first BILLION and acquire Whole Foods, can’t I get a gift card or a lifetime discount on unrefined shea butter?

Gem2001,
Preach it girl!!!
Over half of successful entrepreneur businesses I know of start that exact way. It is very hard to do the complete “jump – swim – (or sink big-time)” startup. So many people start them as side projects, so they still have basic living cash, but keep investing the effort in the side concern. I learned that some years ago working for 2 men who had started exactly that way.
It is also true, that as with any learning process, failures are to be expected. One long time (very successful) independent businessman told me once “You haven’t really worked business until you failed at one, had it go broke. You learn more about what to do/not do through that experience.” I started following the life histories of successful people (financially, not necessarily otherwise, lol. Lots more to life than money. But that’s a whole other convo), and you know what, he was right! Lots of people who’ve “made it” had their earlier “failures” (it ain’t “Failure” ‘til you QUIT) and kept plugging away.
That’s why the side-startup works well; you can maintain some cash flow (THAT is everything!) and not be so pressured to make it all work Right Now ‘cause you got to eat.
And about the ‘healthy eating’ part, well, what do we expect … “garbage in – garbage out”. It’s about quality of life for as long as you got. Without a very pro-active stance about health, nutrition and regular activity (uh, I mean Physical activity, not renting another DVD, lol) life is on the one-way express escalator to … (fill in your own life-observation story here).
Yeah it’s nice hearing about something productive. So many people want access to fresh produce. I wonder if there’s a way of linking up community gardens within a geographical area?
thanks for sharing the information. hope you had fun in my city. see you in june at bwb. pls. tell healhty habbits founder to contact bianca alexander of conscious living tv. http://www.consciouslivingtv.com. bianca is a wonderful green loving sista who will be able to help her out. she is based in chicago now.
stop what you are doing right now and go to http://www.idealist.org, look to the far right, “How Your Nonprofit Can Access Stimulus Funding.”
I just sent this to approximately 40 friends and colleagues of mine here in Washington, DC. I’m not a grant writer or a development officer, but please take a look, find out what’s what and try to make it happen.
Good luck!
There are a number of people on YouTube who talk about gardening and that organic stuff. I learned a lot last year.
As for the side hustle theme. Yes, have to get back on track with those items…..
This is really interesting…
Thanks for the site. My wife and I (I’m an overweight former college offensive lineman) became vegetarians the day after valentines day. Never thought about putting chocolate and zucchini together. But then again down here in Texas deep fried zucchini is popular so why wouldn’t taste goo with chocolate right? I wish her the best!
Gina,
Your So Sweet, and such and inspiration to so many of us, with “Mothers Day” coming up this is perfect because you are “The “Mother of inspiration” to many of us, so please know that I could go on and on about how valuable and influential you’ve been to me personally, but instead I’ll say……………………………….
Yea Girl when I cross that first six digit income you know you know you got yourself a life-time supply of gift cards, but until then, I’m just gonna have to share some of my physic income.
Much Love,
Kim
PS. I’ll forward you some recipes
She may also want to try Green America and search their directory. I believe there are some orgs/business that help expand a service that she offers.
