Somebody is Killing Black Mothers and Daughters in PG County

A reader sent this story to me via the contact form, but they didn’t provide any detail. Hat Tip to Sandra Rose for additional details.

In two separate double murders a single mother and her daughter were killed. Karen and Karissa Lofton were shot in late January in their home. Deloris and Ebony Dewitt were found burning in a car. One in the back seat, one in the trunk:

In each case, the mothers were in their 40s and the daughters were teenagers. They were found dead early in the morning, on a Monday.

One other commonality that emerged yesterday – Karen Lofton, 45, and Deloris Dewitt, 43, were both nurses – appeared to be mere coincidence, police said. Lofton had just finished her first day of orientation to be a school nurse in Largo. Dewitt had worked at a nursing home in Clinton for the past nine years.

But detectives were searching for possible connections between the homicides and a string of burglaries in the area. In all, police said, more than 10 homes have been burglarized there since last fall.

Police questioned teenage suspects in those cases. Baltimore Sun

From My Fox DC:

Police are asking for the public’s help with three pieces of evidence considered critical to the case. Two handbags are missing from the home.

In the meantime, nearly 100 people turned out for a candlelight vigil in front of the family home on Thursday night.

Police are eying a connection with home invasions in the area:

Gina,

It’s no secret that PG county has one of the highest rates of domestic violence in the country. Yeap that’s right. It’s higher than that of crime-ridden Baltimore.

I suspect that the assailant in this horrible case Wasn’t a mask gun man in the night, no thugged out lil’ gangster looking for cash. Instead, I would put my money on the husband or ex-husband.

I wonder if they picked nurses b/c they sometimes work late or have off peak hours? And I hope this isn’t the daughters meeting men on computers. In Queens last year the teen girl met some man online and he ended up killing her in her home. A nice black middle class area. These middle class girls loves the thugs too

I don’ t know this could be a serial killer situation.

But you’re right PG has the highest rate of Domestic Violence in the nation. So we could be looking at spouses or boyfriends who did this. Tragic all around.

Black folks have got to stand up for black women. I just don’t think I’ll see that in this life time. Too many black folks co-sign on abuse which sometimes leads to murder.

According to wikipedia.org, PG county is the wealthiest county in the nation with an African-American majority.

It also has the highest rate of domestic violence in the nation?

Wow.

The other thing is that it appears from the report that the women are single and live alone with their daughters…it is possible that they’re being targeted because they’re perceived as being defenseless.

Whatever the reason, it’s a damned shame.

This is absolutely scary and the people of that neighborhood are just terrified. Where are Al and Jesse protesting in the streets for justice? Where is the NAACP denoucing this violence against the four black women — demanding that the killers be found and punished? I bet they would take more notice if black men were being picked off from their own homes. Regardless, I hope the police get the killer or killers. We see how much (or little) value our lives as black women are in our own communities. D*#n shame.

Re: Rampant Domestic Violence in PG County

There was an article in Essence a couple of years ago discussing it. It was the community’s dirty little secret.

GOD please help my people!

Y’all are trying to blame black men for this – the husbands, fathers, boyfriends and “THUGS”!

I give up – I’m guilty without a trial because white supremacy developed a psychotic stigma in our community! Hate me if you want, you’ll see how far that gets us as a people – right where the white supremacy engineers want us – confused and shooting and killing one another! They get an A+!

Yeah…I know…I’m just making “excuses” for these criminals! JEEZ

just me,
thank you for acknowledging your excuse making for black men.

when you decide to take the REALITY of domestic violence performed on black women seriously, then you’ll understand what the posts above yours are all about…and their validity.

This sounds to me more like a serial killer.
