Al Sharpton and DL Hughley Hate Each Other…411 on Why Sharpton was on Hughley’s CNN Show?

AL Sharpton was on DL Hughley’s CNN Show, D L Hughley Makes the News, which shall forever be known on THIS BLOG as DL Hughley Makes me Snooze.

I am probably the only person that understood why their conversation was talking around an elephant in theroom. Its because these two individuals can’t stand each other, so why were they playing so nice on CNN? Lets have a recap shall we…

Al Sharpton on referring to people as “bitches” and “hoes” -Where is the standard against ‘n—–,’ ‘ho’ and ‘b—h’?” Al Sharpton

Al Sharpton on DL Hughley Calling Black Women “Ugly”-We do not accept or find humor in the denigration of women or any other group. It does not matter whether the person making the statement is black, white or from any other race. Nor does it matter
whether the intent of the comment is a lame attempt at humor, a racist
attack, or in the case of Mr. Hughley, an obvious attempt to create
publicity for himself. It is sad that after a very successful career in
comedy, Mr. Hughley would stoop to behavior that is disrespectful to
women as a means of self promotion. We hope that the entertainment
industry will see through this feeble attempt to gain publicity in order
to find his next job.

D L Hughley on Al Sharpton Last Fall – “I don’t care what Al said. I honestly could care less what he thinks. …I think these cats are just opportunists….ow many people really respect what Al Sharpton says, really? He doesn’t show up unless there’s a camera around. I’m one of the best in the country at what I do, and I don’t need to pretend to be anything else. I’m not pretending to be a preacher while going all over the country getting involved in bullshit fights. I don’t go to Duke University and accuse people of shit and then when I found out I’m wrong, not apologize. I don’t pretend to be a leader and then do the most asinine shit. “DL Hughley

I don’t know Rev. Sharpton, I thought you declared yourself the “Decency Czar” and was going to stamp out referring to women as “b*tches” and “hoes.” So I am perplexed [NOT] as to why you were a guest on D L Hughley’s show this week, didn’t catch the last episode? Here is a refresher in case you forgot about the content of DL Hughley’s show just one week before you were on:

Folks, have you wondered why the usual town chorus has been silent about DL Hughley on CNN. I mean they had a conniption when Don Imus called Black women nappy headed hoes, but where was their outrage when DL Hughley’s first show featured such flowery phrases as “Shut Cha Mouth B*tches” Pimps up Hoes Down, “Bitch Betta have my money”, “Financing hoes”etc?

Much like their reaction to Hughley taking his minstrelsy on to the Tonight Show with Jay Leno to say Black women are the ugliest women he has ever seen in his life, the Black Elite Establishment has silently looked the other way as DL Hughley transforms CNN into the Cooning Negro Network. A WAOD reader aptly pointed out the reason for the silence about Hughley propping his show up on perpetuating racial stereotypes and calling women B*tches and Hoes for Jollies is that all the usual suspects want to be on Hughley’s show.

For those who didn’t know, let me give you some background on Sharpton and Hughley’s recent history. Back when the Black Elite Establishment was being silent about Hughley’s comment on the Tonight Show, this blog, barely three week’s old called Al Sharpton on his double standard in screaming about Imus while remaining silent about Hughley. After WAOD readers mobilized ( for the first time in history) AL Sharpton issued this statement condemning Hughley.

Sharpton was the only member of the Black Elite Establishment and the Civil Rights Industrial Complex to do so, but only after we overwhelmed the National Action Network switchboards:

It has recently come to our attention that D.L. Hughley has made
disturbing comments about the young women of the Rutgers basketball
team. Let me start by reaffirming the position of the National Action
Network. We do not accept or find humor in the denigration of women or
any other group. It does not matter whether the person making the
statement is black, white or from any other race.
In Progress,

Reverend Al Sharpton, President of National Action Network & Tamika
Mallory, Director of National Action Network Decency Initiative

OUCH! Sharpton didn’t exactly publicize his condemnation of Hughley in the same way that he threw himself in front of every TV camera he could find during the Imus brou ha ha. Hughley didn’t even know that Sharpton had condemned Hughley until I told a reporter who interviewed Hughley and me for an article about the Hughley’s attack on the Tonight Show. When the reporter read Hughley Sharpton’s condemnation, this was Hughley’s response:

DLH:It’s funny that of all the people in this, they sent letters to Al Sharpton, to Bill Cosby, to the girls at Rutgers. Did any of them ever respond? No! Who the fuck takes this—I mean, we got people dying on bridges, and this is a four-month-old story, and people are still worried about it?

AVC: Actually, they did get a response from Al Sharpton.

DLH: And what did Al say? You know what, I don’t care what Al said. I honestly could care less what he thinks. I think these cats are just opportunists. I don’t see where they’ve made the world any better, or actually taken a stand about anything that matters. I think in the quest to be relevant, they’ve put themselves in the bin of obscurity. Al Sharpton’s been on my TV show, and he’s sat in front of me, and I’ve said the exact same things.

AVC: It’s funny that you call Sharpton an “opportunist,” because his letter says your joke was an “obvious attempt to create publicity” for yourself, and that it’s sad that you would “stoop to behavior that is disrespectful to women as a means of self-promotion.”

DLH: Al Sharpton’s actually gonna say “self-promotion”? Al Sharpton?! C’mon, man, let’s be real. How many people really respect what Al Sharpton says, really? He doesn’t show up unless there’s a camera around. I’m one of the best in the country at what I do, and I don’t need to pretend to be anything else. I’m not pretending to be a preacher while going all over the country getting involved in bullshit fights. I don’t go to Duke University and accuse people of shit and then when I found out I’m wrong, not apologize. I don’t pretend to be a leader and then do the most asinine shit. I don’t pretend to ban the “n” word while watching people starve. The only difference between me and Al Sharpton is that I’m paid to make people laugh. And when his tally is said and done, if the fact that he got Don Imus off the air is his greatest accomplishment in civil rights? If Al Sharpton’s mad at me, I think I’ve done something right. [Laughs.] That’s the fucking truth.

Pretend Preacher? Asinine? DL Hughley is Right about one thing, Al Sharpton doesn’t show up unless there is a camera around. CNN has LOTS of cameras.

HELOOOO! Why isn’t anybody pointing this mess out. They hate each other’s guts, call each other names in the press, but will bury all of that, including their “principles” to stay in front of the camera. Hypocrites! Sharpton purports to be the decency czar, but sat across from Hughley and didn’t say a word about last week.

Now that you know that, it probably changes how you viewed that AWKWARD exchange with Al Sharpton. Sharpton and Hughley were talking around their exchange. Sharpton basically agreed to give Hughley cover to continue being an embarrassment to All of Black America in exchange for being a guest on the show.

And so you now know why the chorus of condemnation for Hughley’s dreadful show is coming from ordinary African Americans like you and me and those of us in NEW MEDIA. You won’t hear all the usual suspects from the Black Elite Establishment and the Civil Rights Industrial Complex complaining, because the prospect of being given an extended segment on CNN is just to tantilizing for them to resist. Its an incestuous relationship.

I hope Al Sharpton made Hughley beg a little before he agreed to be on that dreadful show. The only whores around here are Sharpton and Hughley… Camera Whores!

Two Black men who deserve little respect from other Blacks, especially women. I don’t need to listen to either one of them. Too much energy wasted on individuals that don’t have a clue.

#2 Naima on 11.03.08 at 10:17 am

This show is still on? I still have not caught it, I tried to get through some of the clips posted but haven’t been able to.
If CNN really had faith in this show they show reruns like all the cable channels do? They would actually re-run them at a time when people have time to watch TV. HBO reruns Bill Maher at an earlier times so people can catch it

I lost respect for DL Hughley years ago when he made a comment on Bill Mahr’s show about how Condoleeza Rice needed a straightening comb. A cheap shot that no one thought was funny but Hughley.

Most people I know watch CNN for reporters like Christiane Amanpour and Michael Ware.

I can only imagine what Bernard Shaw thinks about this show. For me, it’s definitely Must NOT See TV.

#4 Faith on 11.03.08 at 1:15 pm

One step forward and three steps backwards. Of course the opportunists who know better combined with the apologists and excuser we have our work cut out for us!!!

#5 Goldenah on 11.03.08 at 1:53 pm

When you think about it, CNN wants a DL Hughley-type as opposed to an Ed Bradley-type… They like what DL Hughley says because the management that run these media companies agree with his comments. They must be happy to hire this kind of fool.

Imagine being a hard working black reporter, or anyone for that matter, seeing this guy get his own show?

#6 BlackAchievement on 11.03.08 at 2:00 pm

Again, DL takes a cheapshot at Black women. “Black women hate to see Black men with White women, but love Obama the product of . . .” Dude has some serious hang-ups about Black women and I don’t give a darn that he is married to a Black woman.

DL has had a relatively long career in comedy going back to early days of BET’s Comicview. However, if he does not find better writers, he will be gone by December.

#7 Kim on 11.03.08 at 2:46 pm

@Black Achievment,
I thought I was the only one who caught what DL said on Larry King. He truly makes me sick and I am tired of people like him always having a voice. What he forgot to say was, even though Obama was a product of a white woman and a black man, he chose to love, uplift and honor a black woman and not one you have to squint at to tell if she really is black. I have had enough. The heck with Hugley and everyone else who thinks it is ok to laugh at my expense. My last name ends with BA, MD, FACOG and soon to be JD(MAY 2009 Yeah!). What about theirs?

#8 BLKSeaGoat on 11.03.08 at 3:03 pm

Okay,

Has anyone identified the sponsors of DL’s Show? Or should I start targeting all of CNN’s advertisers?

#9 redcatbiker on 11.03.08 at 3:34 pm

You know what, BLKSeaGoat, the cable companies have announced that they will be raising their rates. From the looks of it, most Americans cannot afford to pay for frivolities, these days. (I heard a report today on the radio news that several big chains, such as Circuit City, will be closing many of their stores.) When those rates go up, I am sure that a lot of folks are going to realise that paying for television is not a need–not like food, clothing, and shelter. So, the economy, the fact that it is tanking fast (can you say: depression!), will probably implement your boycott for you.

I think that what HE chose is irrelevant to the point DL seemingly was trying to make. Many lighter skinned black men are attracted to darker women.

What Michelle chose is more of the point. Michelle and other black women apparenlty find Obama appealing and it is reasonable to suggest that his caucasized features played a role in that. These features resulted from his father hooking up with a white woman. So many black women like the results of certain interracial unions while disliking those unions (bm/ww). Same for black men who don’t like to see black women with white men. They don’t like the union, but they like the results.

This reminds me of how so many dark women respond to the idea of black men desiring light skinned women by going after white men. The result of such unions will half the time result in producing more light skinned women for future colorstruck black men. That is such an irony.

#11 BLKSeaGoat on 11.03.08 at 4:19 pm

Redcat,

Some people view cable as a necessity. They will find a way to pay for it. I have no problem with that. What I do have a problem with is being a consumer of products that support the degradation of black people.

Perhaps the several hundred billion dollars that black Americans spend every year isn’t as important to CNN as it may be to their advertisers. We have some leverage.

#12 redcatbiker on 11.03.08 at 4:28 pm

BlkSeaGoat —- That is why I turned mine off (never was a cable television subscriber) eleven years ago.

I know. I wonder why he keeps bringing that up- it’s irrelevant. He also said the same thing on Larry King last night. Is this going to be the mantra for BM who choose to be with WW. Let’s talk about the issues and the candidate’s characters not the race of their parents.

I didn’t even like DL back in his “BET’s Comicview”.

#17 focusedpurpose on 11.04.08 at 1:47 am

is it just me, or could dl at some point take all of his minstrel coon money and afford himself something greater than a ged? why oh why does he wear his ignorance like a badge of honor for the world to witness?

Teri, you have yet to make an relevant comment. why do you persist?

i think it a lie that black women (the thinking ones especially) care either way about black men with white women. those of us that think, actually see the perfection in the unions. white women in large numbers require and are accustomed to worship (pay attention to the non stop media worship before daring to argue), and black men in large numbers worship white(er) skin. it troubles me as a black woman not in the least. these preferences don’t make a whit of difference. it is the denigration and degradation of black women that is the issue. when black men stand up calling folks hos, NO ONE assumes they are talking about anyone other than black women—because they aren’t. other men will not allow such nonsense to go unchallenged and all know this; and in true coward fashion rather than rage against the machine, these minstrels would rather turn their rage/hatred on black women. yet somehow, they still can’t understand why no one respects them or sees them as men. ???!!! mindless indeed.

as a decent person Teri, giving you the benefit of the doubt here, do you really see no problem with the disrespect that hughley, chappelle, wayans, rock, et al heap on the heads of black folks in general, black women especially in the name of humor? i think decency would cause most, without regard for color, to find their perpetuation of racist stereotypes, cloaked as humor, offensive. since everything else is subject to their “humor” what about they make some nazi jokes? joke about white girls gone wild and throw “ho” in those jokes? this will not happen, (nor should it!) because it will NOT be tolerated. those of us with the self respect to speak out against such offensive foolishness will not be silenced by the point missing enablers.

i have done my best to help you find the point. i am cautiously optimistic that you will, understanding that life is truly about choices.

as for dl’s much mentioned black wife, one must be mindful that birds of a feather flock together. she can only be a shameless woefully ignorant enabler. how else could she possibly stay, with a daughter no less, with a person that works mightily to make this world a more hostile place for her, her daughter and other black women? think about it.

Gina, you are spot on! thanks for having the courage to call it out. i agree, these whores that sell their souls for pennies in the big picture deserve to be put on blast at every turn.

thanks for allowing me to share.

Teri, you have yet to make an relevant comment. why do you persist?

Since you want to start this childish attacking, my comments are more relevant that any that you make.

i think it a lie that black women (the thinking ones especially) care either way about black men with white women.

Then you are delusioned. I have heard the complaints all of my life. It is amazing how you tend to call anything that you don’t agree with (or whether pretend not to agree with) a lie. Open your mind and you will see the various solutions to our problems.

those of us that think, actually see the perfection in the unions. white women in large numbers require and are accustomed to worship (pay attention to the non stop media worship before daring to argue), and black men in large numbers worship white(er) skin.

Actual research contradicts this and I will take research over you biased, emotion based and flawed personal perceptions.

it troubles me as a black woman not in the least. these preferences don’t make a whit of difference.

Whether this is true or not about what bothers you (and I take it with a grain of salt), we are not talking about YOU.

it is the denigration and degradation of black women that is the issue. when black men stand up calling folks hos, NO ONE assumes they are talking about anyone other than black women—because they aren’t.

Actually they are. On the other hand, when black women refer to black men as “ni**as”, (which they do more often than black men calling women “bit**es and hos), they are speaking of black men only.

other men will not allow such nonsense to go unchallenged and all know this; and in true coward fashion rather than rage against the machine, these minstrels would rather turn their rage/hatred on black women.

Other men call women these names. The difference is that their women don’t have oversensitivities and don’t automatically falsly assume that the reference is racially specific.

yet somehow, they still can’t understand why no one respects them or sees them as men. ???!!! mindless indeed.

Actually, the ones who do this the most are shown the most respect and are viewed the most as men by a large portion of black women.

as a decent person Teri, giving you the benefit of the doubt here, do you really see no problem with the disrespect that hughley, chappelle, wayans, rock, et al heap on the heads of black folks in general, black women especially in the name of humor? i think decency would cause most, without regard for color, to find their perpetuation of racist stereotypes, cloaked as humor, offensive. since everything else is subject to their “humor” what about they make some nazi jokes? joke about white girls gone wild and throw “ho” in those jokes? this will not happen, (nor should it!) because it will NOT be tolerated. those of us with the self respect to speak out against such offensive foolishness will not be silenced by the point missing enablers.

Girls Gone Wild is joked about constantly. You can find the same classlessness in humor by white comedians. You never heard of Andrew Dice Clay? You didn’t hear where George Carlin described anorexic women as whiny, rich, white women with nothing better to do than complain? One of the main ingredients of Kat Williams humor is that he pimps white women. No one complains.

i have done my best to help you find the point. i am cautiously optimistic that you will, understanding that life is truly about choices.

I know the point. I understand life and I understand how to make it in life. That is through action and self improvement as opposed to whining about imaginary oppression just for the sake of whining. I definitely don’t need your help with anything.

as for dl’s much mentioned black wife, one must be mindful that birds of a feather flock together. she can only be a shameless woefully ignorant enabler. how else could she possibly stay, with a daughter no less, with a person that works mightily to make this world a more hostile place for her, her daughter and other black women? think about it.

She stays with someone who makes the world a better place for both of them being that she has access to millions of dollars, probably the best schools for her child, etc.

Gina, you are spot on! thanks for having the courage to call it out. i agree, these whores that sell their souls for pennies in the big picture deserve to be put on blast at every turn.

It’s shameful that you call black people whores.

#19 gem2001 on 11.04.08 at 7:54 am

It’s shameful that you call black people whores.

I agree, and yet you remain silent an nonchalant as Black women are called B*tches and hoes all day long.

Folks, please leave Teri alone. Teri’s agenda is clear. We must learn to focus our efforts on those who “get it” and stop wasting energy on those who don’t. If Harriet Tubman had delayed her efforts until she convinced all Black folks to be free, she would not have freed a single slave.

Sometimes you just got to leave some folks on the plantation and help the ones who want to get the heck outta there.

#20 Knockoutchick on 11.04.08 at 8:43 am

Well as I have said, the difficulty in exposing this issue to debate, is that so many men in our community seem to be “in on the joke”. Few seem to see where there is a problem with constant references to b*tches and hoes and ongoing sexist, misogynistic rifts.

It is interesting that Teri would bring up a white comedian, brilliant, though no longer living and another white comedian barely working who may have made moderately offensive jabs at white women.

Yet, among BM comedians sexist humour seems to be the staple of their shows, from b*tch, hoe, pimp, trick or fat lady jokes..without those words these guys would have 2 minutes of material.

And I must say if mostly BW where in those “Girls Gone Wild” videos, most BM comedians would be relentless in their grilling and ridiculing of those women.

I have heard WM comedians make fun of the “Girls Gone Wild”..but more along the line of “I wish they would go wild with me”, not in the bitter way most BM comedians refer to the b*tches and hoes they despise.

OK! Last words on that :-)

The ignorant will always be given a voice. The voice of those who will lead will never be heard. It is those who will never inspire anyone will get the loudest mic. In our community the intellectuals and professionals are placed in the back while the buffoons are the ones who are the most admired, continual leading many of them to no where.

#24 JaliliMaster on 11.07.08 at 7:25 pm

Teri, r u a black man or woman? Because I’m REALLY trying to understand your perspective, but right now, your opinions are making you look kinda…….I dunno.

#25 Tony Freeman on 11.23.08 at 9:25 pm

D.L. You are a sell out!! Your comments demonstrates you are the Judas of our people. Hiding behind the First Amendment is cowardly. At least Damon Wayans who I equally feel was way out of line, didn’t hide behide the constitution. Like OJ, Michael Jackson, Jesse Jackson, Tavis Smiley and so many more, you feed off of the exploitation created by white America. Let real people appear on your show to discuss your betrayal. Your legacy will forever be tainted. Try and salvage your career and your legacy showing humility. I can’t wait to read your up an coming interview with Jet Magazine. Keep it up bro and your career will end like so many others that thought their celebrity status was unbreakable.

#26 Loving Mother on 01.05.09 at 5:38 pm

People get a life. Al Sharpton is never of interest to me. D.L. is just that D.L.! He is the same now as he has been from the time that he first hit the scene. If you don’t like him then don’t watch and support him. But I find him to be funny at times. He’s not Bernie or Steve Harvey. He’s more along the lines of a Chris Rock or Chris Tucker. I give him credit for staying true and honest to what he believes in no matter how others feel. No one is more demaging to the human race than Nancy Grace! Oh….how I don’t like that woman.

Ok, back to the subject at hand. As far as the comments of white women and black men. Lots of black women can’t stand the thought of a black man being with a white woman. But unfortunately it took Destiny Child for some of you to start catering to our men. The rest of you don’t know when to be quiet. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t have a voice in the relationship. But you should know when enough is enough. The nagging that I see amongst just some of the couples that my husband and I know is the worst. I believe if we truly learn to appreciate and stop trying to change our men then maybe life would be a lot easier.

Do I agree with everything that D. L. says? NO! But I’m not going to ridicule him for it. He is entitled to his opinions just as we are entitled to ours.

As far as the comments on name calling. It’s within the context of how the names are used according to my younger generation of family members. Long time ago to be called a Jive Turkey or a Sissy/Punk was very common. Now they use N*gga or B*tches and H*es. My late father said that I wasn’t like my younger sisters because I didn’t allow him to call me up on the phone and use such language. But my sisters did and they laughed like it was nothing. Me, myself, I would have been offended. But to them it was a game and a sign of affection. They were cool like that with him and I wasn’t. But it didn’t make my father a bad man because he knew the difference and respected my wishes. The songs and other inferences that are spoken don’t have to be played or listened to by any of you. If you don’t like the language don’t listen. Respect yourself and others will provide you with just as much respect as you give them.

#27 Chas_Man on 07.01.09 at 10:31 am

As a Christian I am taught to love everyone, including those who hate me. As for Al Sharpton, I have never heard him preach the gospel of Jesus or even a Praise the Lord. Mr. T, from the A team, preaches the Gospel. Why can’t Sharpton be more like Mr. T.
DLH should be respectful with his speech on prime time TV. There are children out there who listen and are influenced by adult conversations. However, I do believe that everyone is not above critisism. We should not hide behind our race and say you can’t critisize me because I am this color. I am considered a white person, but I do critisize other white people, Jefferson and Washington, for owning slaves when at the time they were preaching democracy.
Peace Out.

#28 RF on 09.02.09 at 10:28 pm

My problem with Rev. Al has to do with his radio show, when he has that “prophet” preacher on (can’t remember his name) once a month, who takes calls from people and tells them their so called future. That’s the biggest farce i’ve ever heard.
