Sidelined by Tight Braids —In the Interim Watch Roland Martin and Donna Brazile Drop it Like its Warm

I have been saving this post for a day when I could not post about anything. I got fresh braids Monday morning and I am suffering from a severe headache. This is worse than normal so I have no choice but to go sleep it off. In the interim, while I wait for them to loosen up so that my brain can function again, I decided to pull this post up from my rather large collection of “On Second Thought, I Better Not Post This” posts. So here is what I would have posted a month ago if I had not decided not to post it ( confused? me too! blame it on the braids)…. Read the original post after the jump.

We need a good laugh. We’ve already firmly established that YouTube is Satan’s workshop. I once joked with a a fellow blogger that I could never kick it in public again because folks would love to be able to say” I saw that Girl from WAOD doing the ‘Cupid Shuffle! Hypocrite!”

The other reason is because I don’t want to be YouTubed like Roland Martin and Donna Brazile of CNN. Apparently they are CNN’s official dance team.

We gone grant Donna the “Louisiana relative exemption”. Those of you who have Louisiana relatives know what I mean. That’s just what they do. I don’t know what Roland’s exemption is.

Yep. YouTube = The Devil.

Gina, Immma need you to stop getting your hair braided so tightly. Traction alopecia is no joke and will have you looking like that chick from Essence in no time.

#2 gem2001 on 10.07.08 at 5:39 am

Roslyn it has NEVER been this bad. I woke up when I could catch som sleep last night in a cold sweat from the pain. My face even hurt.

I finally broke down and had to take them out of the cute elittle bun she had put them in, sprayed a bunch of leave in conditioner on them to loosen them up.

This morning I am healed. I can at least move my facial muscles. I am trying to go natural and I think the next time I go I an going to have her cut out the rest of the perm and rock a twa for the winter

Hangeth thou in there. I know the pain!!!

#4 Womenfolktalk on 10.07.08 at 7:52 am

Gem,

LOL! I went through the same thing. Girl, if you take them out, do what I did. Cut three inches of hair for every three inches of new growth. Also, go to http://www.healthytextures.ning.com and join the group for more tips and tutorials.

You know D.C. is going to be off the chain when Obama gets sworn in! And Donna Brazile will be partying with the best of them.

I have tickets to see her speak in February. You know if I get called on for a question, I’m gonna raise this!

OFF Topic:

It’s getting ugly out there. McCain is stirring racial hatred against Obama in his rallies.

It’s really scary.

The next time you get your hair braided take asprin or Tylenol before hand. I find that it really reduces the pain that comes with get your hair done…Why oh why do we women have to suffer to look good.

Funny Political Pundits - Donna Brazile dropping it on Roland Martin…Is he her boo? What will Anderson Cooper think? Back that thang up DB.

#9 Huemanity on 10.07.08 at 2:02 pm

Will there be a live chat during the debate tonight?

#10 me on 10.07.08 at 2:38 pm

Where’s the proof Sen. McCain is behind it?

#11 HillerieCamille on 10.07.08 at 2:39 pm

What?! We’re not supposed to do the Cupid Shuffle? Hi Gina!! Tight braids, well as a former hair stylist, I will say certainly watch the tighness around the edges. Also, having worn braids most of this and last year, let them hang loose the first couple of days– the tight bun is a NO NO. Love the site.

#12 regina on 10.07.08 at 3:59 pm

Donna and Roland are doing the darn thing… or doing something!! But hey at least they know how to kick back and have fun!

#13 J.Adia on 10.07.08 at 4:38 pm

Earth Wind & Fire does the same thing to me. Best live show I’ve ever seen.

#14 Naima on 10.07.08 at 5:27 pm

When I get my hair braided I just skip the cute buns and ponytails the first couple of days, I just keep my hair in a loose ponytail or just leave the hair down. I spray moisturizer when I get home the same day I get them done. I also notice twists are a lot easier on the hair than braids

#15 Tasha212 on 10.07.08 at 6:14 pm

Girl! I know how you feel. That braid pain is no joke. That’s why I’m so chooy about who I let in my head. I have soft hair so it breaks easily. I lost my hair on the side once because my braids were too tight. It grew back, THANK GOD, but it was a mess for awhile. Hope it feels better soon.

#16 Monica on 10.07.08 at 7:30 pm

This is why I only get about ten cornrows.

#17 Monica on 10.07.08 at 7:38 pm

Are you Donna Brazile?
1. Do you spin when you dance for no reason (check)
2. Do you drop it like it’s hot and bring it back up like it’s cold(check)
3. Dou feel the need to dance with a white handkerchief or towel (check)

Oh My God. I am Donna Brazil.

#18 MrsMcG on 10.07.08 at 9:47 pm

Girl, you are so right…. I’m from New Orleans and my relatives do the same thing! Only it’s Frankie Beverly & Maze instead of E,W &F that get us cuttin’ up! I hope we can all celebrate like that on November 4.

#19 Shay on 10.08.08 at 7:12 am

That was cute, I just wanted to start singing “Go Roland” LOL…. Thanks for sharing that. Tight braids are no fun at all, hope the pain lessens up.

#20 seki on 10.08.08 at 10:26 am

Could Roland’s exemption be Texas?

Relax and rest

#21 KIM on 10.08.08 at 11:32 am

@gem2001,
Don’t leave those braids in too long. I suffered traction alopecia after trying to be Janet Jackson for a year. It took 10 years for my hair to recover and thank God it did. Don’t do it girl. LOL!

#22 redcatbiker on 10.08.08 at 2:15 pm

Their dancing was so very joyous. I love it!

In the first posted, did you hear the comment that someone made about “black people dancing”?

#23 redcatbiker on 10.08.08 at 2:16 pm

correction:

In the first video posted…

#24 Yejide on 10.08.08 at 3:35 pm

Have you tried the steam from a hot shower, with your hair lightly covered, or a washcloth as hot as you can stand to relieve the pain? Both have worked for me with braids and loc retwists. Check your scalp, if you find tiny bumps, the hair is braided too tight and should come down or you will start to lose hair in that area. Take care of your blessings, peacefully.

Oh goodness I had the best laughing, smiling and clapping watching those clips! Wow what joy this election is bringing Happy Days are coming!
DC and the whole country will be off the chain!
Inauguration viewing parties everywhere!

I’ve been natural for more than a year now and I’m a big proponent of “the big chop.” The first time I tried to go natural, I wanted to hang on to length and I used braids, etc. It was a headache in more ways than one. This time, I took a deep breath and had my stylist give me a TWA, which (to my surprise) looked pretty cute on my generous (ahem) head.

Hang in there.

#27 Los Angelista on 10.09.08 at 6:34 pm

Love those video clips! Thanks so much for sharing. They make me smile on a day when I’m a little wary of opening the 401(k) statement that came in the mail yesterday.

So exciting that you are going natural. I’ve had too many bad experiences with hair being braided too tight so I transitioned my hair for a year by wearing straw sets and finally cut it at the end of July.

Good luck with this!

My all time favorite live concert, “Earth, Wind, & Fire”. You’re right, they’ll bring out some odd moves.

#29 La on 10.10.08 at 5:47 pm

Tami, I almost did the big chop last month. I chicken out at the last minute. I went back to the cream crack out of fear, but I’ll give it a try this coming new year.

#30 Exquisitely Black on 10.10.08 at 6:30 pm

Glad to hear you’re letting the perm go, I did so too, about seven years ago. I finally had to ask myself why I was burning my scalp and when i couldn’t come up with a good answer, I stopped.

#31 J.Adia on 10.10.08 at 9:46 pm

I was raised on EWF. My dad was not going to come to visit me in Las Vegas until they had a concert. My mom made him buy the plane tickets. Fortunately for him we found out that EWF was coming the same weekend they were visiting. EWF is serious business in my household!

#32 siditty on 10.11.08 at 5:00 am

Who knew Earth, Wind, and Fire could get Roland moving. Those videos are too funny!

#33 siditty on 10.11.08 at 5:01 am

Oh yeah, like Roslyn said, hopefully the braids aren’t too tight you don’t end up with the seven head Susan Taylor. Your hairline should never start behind your ears, ever.

#34 Yme on 10.11.08 at 6:34 am

@
J.Adia

That is so funny. EWF is serious business for any former or current SWAC band as well. I love it.

#35 LaJane Galt on 10.14.08 at 10:56 am

be careful w/ micros. I have the thin patch to prove it.

Also, you should always dope up before braids.
