So there we were minding our own business in our this tiny little island in the cybersea giving our heartfelt beliefs about CNN giving a show to shuck and jivester, DL Hughley (aka “Black Imus”) and some contributor to the National Ledger decided to quote a few passages from out mildly stated post, CNN Gives New Show to Black-Woman-Hating Comic DL Hughley.
This is how the National Ledger described our quaint little cyber paradise:
Is this a risk for CNN or a natural fit? What About Our Daughters has a detailed article noting what they believe are many of the shortcomings of D.L.’s comedy (including video) and wonder aloud on the decision by CNN. National Ledger
Um, we aren’t “wondering” we are saying OUTRIGHT, D L Hughley is an inferior comedic talent and I want to see the list of Black comics they considered before they settled on him. Again, we aren’t wondering. We’re stating emphatically, CNN could have done BETTER than DL Hughley.
We are not alone. 73% of the readers of TV Newser which caters to media insiders say they will not be watching the show.
To Hughley’s Family, Friends, and Fans ( all five of y’all) descending on our tranquil oasis in attempt to provoke some type of controversy, we will not be moved from our position that we are not going to assist D.L. Hughley’s publicist as we inadvertently did in the past. You know, when y’all would call up reporters telling them about this blog and our contention that Hughley is a Black-woman-hating minstrel. You shouldn’t need to stoke controversy to generate attention for this folly, Hughly should be able to rise and fall on his own merits…if he has any!
We’ll just be watching to see which advertisers believe that Black women are “the ugliest women” Hughley has ever seen in his life. It’s gonna be a blast!

This show and David Allan Griers new show on comedy central both made me wish that either network had gotten Chris Rock to do their shows. My wife did point out one thing though, an Obam presidency may lead to more roles for blacks in the media.I hope this is the start regardless of how I feel about the comics chosen or their shows.
Any advertiser who places ads during his show can count on me NOT buying their products, and they can also count on me putting up a blog post as to why.
How do i let CNN know my concerns of DL Hughgley infrerior comedic talent?? He does represent the best of Black thought.
I was watching some of the “blockbuster” films that came out last year, and I was struck by the following:
- the black guys are “funny” because they act rude and disrespectful to black women.
- no black women in any prominent roles.
I’d like to know why these media people hate black women so much. Is it just popular culture now?
Wait a minute. I must note a double standard. Where were you guys whan Sandra Bernhard, a darn good comedian, made her comments about a bunch of black men raping Sarah Palin? Frankly, I could care less about what she said but I was curious as to the complete absence of feminist indignation.
Now, there are first amendment issues in play. Imus had every right to say what he said, as did Sandra Bernhard. The indignation over this reminds me of all the whiny men who wanted Lorena Bobbit killed for chopping off her husband’s penis. While I thought she went a little over the top in her vengeful act, there is some justification in it if in fact John Wayne Bobbit did abuse her. The average dude didn’t understand it. My point is that the indignation on this thread seems somewhat misguided. Now if your issue is about the presentation of mysogynist concepts throughout the mass and public media, then I am with as long as you are consistent in your application of indignation. Also, I’d like to see some of you guys acknowledge the existence of media outlets that are alternatives to the DL Hughleys, Sandra Bernhards, and Imus’. These folks have a right to say the things they say BUT we also have a right to turn away and seek out alternative sources of entertainment.
AL, you never cease to amaze.
I would have totally understood if Bobbitt had killed her husband after years of abuse. But she cut off his penis in a sick, bizarre act of sadism. This wasn’t a person who was terrorized and afraid. This was a hateful vengeful woman who wanted to see somebody suffer. How did she think Bobbitt was going to react to being castrated? Remorse? Turning over a new leaf?
Hell no, he probably wanted to revenge himself and she was ready to go to war.
Sorry pal, Lorena was no victim. I’m sure I’m going to hear it from the protofeminists on board but just like rightwingers are always telling blacks folks.
You folks aren’t always the victims. Sometimes you’re the villians.
Is anyone ready to admit that there are manhaters on sites like these and elsewhere?
I agree that Hughley and others have been extremely disrespectful and cruel toward black women.
Hughley has always bugged me. His whole “black Archie Bunker” act is tired. The way he hates on women tells me all I need to know about how he feels about gays. Since I am one I’ve never had any use for him. I can smell a homophobe and woman hater from a mile away and when he’s on the air gets rank real quick. He’s one of those people that whites like a whole lot more than blacks (Wayne Brady, David Allan Grier, Blair Underwood, Wesley Snipes, OJ, etc).
Hi Al,
I thought that Sandra B’s comments were disgusting and racist. But honestly, there are enough fighters for black men and white women so they don’t need my help in speaking out.
LorMarie beat me to it. I love it when people come to this site engaging in obfuscation and redirection. Speak to the matter on the floor. Stop looking for excuses for this behavior.
As LorMarie said, other groups have plenty of advocates. Black women have few who will speak publicly and unapologetically on their behalf.
Last I heard, Bernhart was losing gigs as a result of her disgusting comments.
DL is just not funny. I always forward through his part in the Kings of Comedy. I won’t be watching his show and I hope no one else does.
David Allan Griers show is funny as hell bump what you heard.
I am going to check out DL show to see what it’s about, from what I know his mistake was the Rutgers women fiasco I dont recall hearing a trend of black women bashing from him.
I’m so glad I’m not paying for this trash. I got rid of cable March 2006. It does not look like I will be getting it back anytime soon.
If anyone bothers to watch this program I would like to find out who the sponsors are of this madness. I will not support those companies with my hard earned cash.
I have always been a fan of DL’s comedy. However, I voiced to him that I did not like his comments about the Rutgers women and he respectfully disagreed with me and was unapologetic. With that being said, I think he made a huge mistake but do not believe him to be a hater of Black women . He is married to a Black woman and has a daughter. I was also appalled by Chris Rock’s comments about Black women in his new show. I try not to take myself too seriously when it comes to humor but the comments are painful to hear. Chris Rock is married to a Black woman and has daughters as well. There is definitely a contradiction.
As LorMarie said, other groups have plenty of advocates. Black women have few who will speak publicly and unapologetically on their behalf.
Though you repeat this, you never substantiate it. Black women have no less advocates than black men and probably have more.
Adele Givens did a stand-up comedy routine where she joked about how ugly Flavor Flav is. No one cared. Men like Patrick Ewing and others are constantly made fun of due to being perceived as ugly. No one cares. Black men have little advocacy compared to black women and I challenge anyone to prove me wrong.
Well I hope DL enjoys his 15 minutes, er 3 minutes of fame. I’m sure Russell Simmons will hire him again. Since he sold Phat Farm it’s not like we could say we won’t buy it. I never thought he was funny and couldn’t figure out how he ever got work. He does NOT get a pass for calling female athletes and college students ugly. He was just jealous because he can’t aspire to achieve more than a GED. Career success doesn’t equate being a great person. I hope he cashed those CNN checks!
C’mon uptownsteve, I do believe that Lorena Bobbit went a bit far with her vengful act BUT John Wayne Bobbit had to expect something to happen. Yes, Lorena’s response was excessive but John Wayne Bobbit should have expected something.
Yes, I know that I am rehashing the Marcellus Wallace, Tony “Rocky Horror” argument from Pulp Fiction but Vinnie Vega had a point.
“I thought that Sandra B’s comments were disgusting and racist. But honestly, there are enough fighters for black men and white women so they don’t need my help in speaking out.”
LorMarie, my point is that folks throw around the label “misogynist” but are selective in their application of it. I wasn’t criticizing the notion that black men had been wronged by Bernhard’s comments. I was criticizing the folks who only see misogyny where their own people are concerned.
I am also arguing in favor of Bernhard’s, Imus’, and Hughley’s right to use this type of material in their comedy. Truth be told, the Imus comment was hysterical. At the very least, some of us have to check ourselves when deeming certain brands of humor as “improper”. I cannot get angry when a comedian says something derogatory about black folks but laugh out the other side of my mouth when I hear an old Richard Pryor bit that caricatures white people.
gem 2001
Could you please explain who is speaking out specifically for black men and not black women???
Is there a website called “What about out sons?”
Sam
“Black men have little advocacy compared to black women and I challenge anyone to prove me wrong.”
Don’t worry brother.
They won’t.
Uptownsteve,
there isn’t a site, but there is a community, Its called The Black Community. It pretty much ALWAYS protects BM.
Sacha,
That’s empty rhetoric. You couldn’t substantiate it with any facts if your life depended on it.
What’s this about “protecting” black men? Protecting them from what?
Do you hate black men?
Do consider us your enemy?
I’m glad my wife, mother and sister don’t feel that way.
LorMarie, my point is that folks throw around the label “misogynist” but are selective in their application of it. I wasn’t criticizing the notion that black men had been wronged by Bernhard’s comments. I was criticizing the folks who only see misogyny where their own people are concerned.
Or rather see misogyny only and turn a blind eye to misandry. When asked by a white audience member in a predominantly white audience about the use of the word “ni**er”, black comedian, Erica Watson, said “I don’t know. You guys invented the word, so you guys should be able to use it. I mean don’t you just look at a guy and say ‘Damn, he’s such a ni**er!’? I mean, you know a ni**er when you see one. There are those three in the corner right there” (refering to three black men sitting in a corner). Little was made of her words. No controversy at all.
When discussing the similarities between Jewish grandmothers and black men, comedian Sarah Silverman said “Both love tracksuits, their car of choice is a Cadillac, they like bling and money and jewellery… and all their friends are dying.” So the death of black men is made into a joke, yet there is little negative reaction to it.
Lisa Lampanelli is another comedian who gets away with constantly stereotyping black men.
AL from Bayshore
“I cannot get angry when a comedian says something derogatory about black folks but laugh out the other side of my mouth when I hear an old Richard Pryor bit that caricatures white people.”
C’mon Al, there is a big difference between satire and hate.
Bernhardt and Imus were spreading hatred and ridicule.
Hughley and Sista Souljah engaged in hate as well.
Pryor’s humor was observational and poked fun at everyone, white, black, Asian etc…….
There is no comparison.
It’s interesting to hear how the black community is supposedly protecting black men all of the time, yet black men are being killed at a ridiculous rate and are likewise being lost at such rates. What kind of protection is that?
I would really be interested in seeing someone break down what this “protection” specifically is.
I am stunned by the reaction to this comic. I will watch the show. As a Black woman and a thinking person, I welcome the discourse. Rather than label, or have your perception colored by whatever biases you may have, listen to what he has to say. His commentaries on life and this society hit the mark. I have never percieved of him as anti-Black woman.
Would you men please get off this site and take your empty propensities to try to change the subject elsehwere. This site is called What About Our Daughters. If you have nothing to contribute to the uplift of black women, then you don’t need to be here.
Sandra,
Just as I thought.
You’re a manhating fascist.
Sandra, if you don’t want your opinions challenged, then you don’t have opinions. You have beliefs. Having your opinions challenged is key to critical thinking.
Truth be told, the Imus comment was hysterical. –Al
Truth be told, Michael Richards was provoked by the black males he lashed out at (N word tyrade) that night. I agree that some people find negative comments directed at black women funny. But some people also feel that Richards was justified that night.
Though you repeat this, you never substantiate it. Black women have no less advocates than black men and probably have more.–SAM
Black people are much more likely to stick up for black men than black women. I’ll throw out some names:
Sean Bell
Stephen Lawrence (UK hate crime murder victim)
Rodney King
OJ
James Byrd (TX dragging death)
Abner Louima
Amadou Diallo
To name a few. Most of the men above were victims of racist hate crimes or police brutality. In the case of OJ, he is an alleged murderer. You had black men and women rushing to their causes via protests and other forms of activism. Crimes committed against black women do not get anywhere near the outrage from most blacks. If a black man is her attacker, she is almost always labeled a liar or in some way deserving of her abuse (R Kelly). Thus, strong advocates are needed for black women.
Hi LorMarie. Let me throw out some names.
Tawana Brawley
Crystal Gail Mangum
Shaquanda Cotton
Tyisha Miller
Megan Williams
Latasha Harlins
Kathryn Johnston
Tarika Wilson
Each of these cases resulted in national media coverage, protests and intervention by Sharpton and/or Jackson. When black men are killed by other black men, there is no reaction. When black men are killed by black women, there is no reaction and it is automatically assumed that she was defending herself even if that was not the actual case.
Black woman are no less likely to be stuck up for than black men are probably more likely to be stuck up for. With so many black men killed, my list of defended women should not be longer than your list.
I’ve always hated his brand of comedy and now you add his Imus comments. I’m guessing the show would not find an audience and fall off the radar.
With so many black men killed, my list of defended women should not be longer than your list.
And folks that says it all…WOW that says it right there. LorMarie, you might want to throw back at him some statistics about the rates of non-fatal violence committed against Black women. Now MOOOOST men would think it odd to expect their women to be dying at the same rate as they are. To want 1 for 1 rates of death
But not this person. You see in ALL groups women are murdered at lower rates than men, but BLack women are THREE TIMES more likely to be murdered than white women and we are just as likely to be the victims of non-fatal violence as Black men. In other words, this person is upset with Black women because we MANAGE TO SURVIVE the beatings, tortures, and rapes. We don’t count unless we die.
Go read what Black women in the Democratic Republic of Congo manage to survive:
http://cnn.com/2008/WORLD/africa/10/15/congo.women/index.html?iref=newssearch
Try not to feed the trolls. This post is about DL Hughley, but as always, those who cannot stand that this blog exists. By “cannot stand”,I mean they HATE that there is a space designated to advocate on behalf of Black women. So what do they do? What they always do, turn this into the battle of victimization. So y’all are going to spend the day responding to this comment trying to convince someone who does not care about Black women that we have issues WE are concerned about, even if they don’t care about them.
Stop trying to convince people. If you see a problem, act on it. If you were offended by Hughley act on it. You will never be able to convince some people that it is important to address the dehumanization of Black women. You will never be able to convince some people that the brutalization of Black women is AS IMPORTANT AS the brutalization of Black men.
They will tie you up in knots with their tactics. You don’t see the American Heart Association raising money for breast Cancer. Lance Armstrong isn’t raising money for diabetes. The United Say isn’t raising money for university endowments. ALl of these groups have a mission that is defined, much like this blog. Yet I don’t see these same boo birds flocking there to say “Well unless you address EVERYBODY’S issues, you can’t address ANY.”
The purpose of the trolling is to disrupt and draw attention away from the post. Its the post they fear, not the comments. They fear that if we wanted to, we could wipe this little troll right off of CNN… WE’VE DONE IT BEFORE!
I said all that to say “Don’t Feed the Trolls.” Sometimes I leave up comments to remind y’all that lunacy still exists. Displaying the ignorance helps keep you focussed. You wouldn’t believe people like this were out there if I didn’t let them demonstrate their foolishness for all the world to see.
“I mean they HATE that there is a space designated to advocate on behalf of Black women.”
puh-leeze..
This is obviously a space designated to hatin on black men.
You sistas really need to stop this nonsense.
We are not your enemies.

From a STATISTICAL STANDPOINT, my list should not be longer if, as you claim, more attention is given to black male victims than black female victims. Nothing was said regarding what I expect or desire.
Also, according to table 6 of:
http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/cvus0601.pdf
white males are the victims of violent crime at a rate of 25.7 (per 1000). White females are such victims at a rate of 21.0.
The rate for black males is 34.5 compared to a rate of 30.1 for black females.
That’s a difference of 4.7 between white males and females and a difference of 4.4 between black males and females.
The gender differences in rates for violent crimes is practically the same for both blacks and whites.
Gina,
point taken. when I saw that so-called list the guy brought in, I just had to laugh. He cannot possibly be serious.
But back to the focus, I did send a “nice” email to CNN. If many more people protest, DL will have a hard time getting any job.
I’ll get to DL Hugh in a second…
Black people, male and female, do not have adequate protection - from black males. The truth is that black men (not most of them) are the black community’s biggest problem.
Black males (not most of them) are the ones who, in the black community:
driveby shoot
deal drugs
pimpin’ and hustlin’
burgulary
robbin’ old folks
abandon their kids (in some cases, that may be a good thing)
Go to the Olympics and showboat/taunt other athletes as they outrun them, while the entire world watches (!)
do most of the things that make the black race look bad (Cosby cited several)
make black families like mine take it out to the burbs so they can live in peace
make black families like mine skeptical about going to the hood for any reason
terrorize kids who pay attention in school
terrorize teachers
promote a keepin’ it real culture that celebrates being inarticulate and unscholarly, a promiscuous pimp-playa
commit the overwhelming majority of homicides, domestic violence, rape, gang bangin’, home invasions, larceny, street harassment, pedophilia, and fighting (in the black comm).
The overwhelming majority of all things bad come from the male species. This is an undeniable historical fact.
However, civilized men should not feel in any way guilty about the deeds of the uncivilized “manchild”. You are not like this, and you didn’t do it.
Regarding DL H., I think his joke about the Rutgers women was inappropriate, and that he should apologize, even given his 1st amendment right.
I am appalled that human decency towards other humans is not upheld in this society. This same sort of endorsement of shamefull behavior is what is bankrupting our country morally and economically. His antics are not funny, but outright disrespectful and viscious. I hope his show flops. People are given a pass for doing hateful things way too often in this society. That’s why so many other people choose not to hold themselvers accountable for their actions and words. Shame on CNN. I will be protesting, and am considering moving on to other news sources for information. Both on tv and on the internet.
I don’t like the show. It was humiliating.
I am sick of these non-talented artist being allowed to pass along ignorance and vulgarity for comedy.
