Perhaps the article was poorly written on purpose to try and “disguise” the obvious jealousy and bias against black women.
Honestly, try to show this to your dads, mom, aunties, uncles, cousins, play-cousins, etc. They will read maybe 10 words and then their eyes will gloss over and jaws will go slack. They will miss the significance of the article…which is the point of the author imho.

“This “writer” is just another example of a non-black woman basically trying to put black women in their place. Don’t get it twisted, this article is bigger than Barack and Michelle. It’s a message to all of us – you’re either a jolly mammy or a whore and if you think there’s room for you to be smart, successful and unapologetic we will tear you down, mmmmkay?”

Envy is one of the “seven deadly sins” and that is what we see in this article. Total envy, hatred, and resentment of an intelligent, articulate, accomplished, beautiful black woman. So what else is new??

Regards of what demon possessed people say, there is an authority higher that all of us. Michelle Obama is a wonderful, accomplished woman and very beautiful and she scares the hell out of insignificant people.

I agree. Those were my first thoughts exactly. I was like what in the H-E double hockey sticks?? Maybe that is why Gina suggested we read it twice.

Are they hiring at this mag? I was never an English major, but after reading that article I am thinking anyone can be a writer.

I didn’t like the subtext of that statement either. I also didn’t like the subtext of the whole Do The Right Thing scenario.

...but also, I suspect Barack is a type 6 personality while Michelle is a type 1. So, i wouldn't be surprise if Barack's great concern way back when really WAS about abandonement. But then again... who cares? And so what?

And also I agree it reads choppy!

Almost all her choice of adjectives were negative towards Michelle. She’s got a chip on her shoulder and wrote for anyone who needs to lap this sort of thing up. sigh.

I felt that it was nothing more than a jump on the ‘let’s hate /bash Michelle’ bandwagon.

Thanks for posting this. I am completely appalled by this. It almost seems like both New York and New Yorker have it in for Michelle Obama because she’s not Hillary Clinton (they’re beloved senator).

This article is classist and racist, full of stereotypes about African American women, families, and communities.

Boo hiss on this article and its writer.

To add to the chorus of the what the hells. What the hell were thinking publishing this crap. I could barely get past the first paragraph specifically this quote. “The dress fits snugly, with a bit of blue-and-orange-beaded flair sewn near her chest bone, sparkling like a costume necklace from a flea market.” May be I’m reading to much into this but something about this really bothered me. At least the comments aren’t too horrible.
