Well this explains ALOT. Mama, see it was so not my fault. I told you it was the teachers and not me. This study was conducted in Texas too. I wonder if it included any of my teachers?
The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition reports that teachers at the Texas school were observed over a two year period, disciplining black girls to show more passivity and deference, when other children were “rarely disciplined in the same manner for their actions”. The F-Word
Well clearly these efforts did not work in my case. Actually they did temporarily, but that is another post. But yes I can attest to the fact that you pay a heavy price for being an assertive Black girl in school. Hell, you pay a heavy price for being an assertive Black woman, but you get to a point where you just don’t care. The cost of being silent is too high.
ON a lighter note…. Speaking of Texas. This brother got busted when 1-800 Flowers sent a thank you note to his house…. except the flowers were for his girlfriend and when his wife called to inquire about the thank you note apparently 1-800 flowers spilled the beans. NOw he has to pay child support (GASP! THE HORROR!) and the wife want $300,000 , but of course taking responsibility for being stupid would just be too much so he is suing 1-800 flowers for $1.5 mil. He also wants mental anguish. Oh to be on that jury…OH and it’s in Harris County too… BWAAAH! You have got to watch this tape! Now that I have stopped laughing…. he actually might have a legal leg to stand on. They did fax the receipt to a third party, the wife. I ain’t ever gotten a thank you card from 1-800 flowers. I almost think the person taking the order sent the card to the wife on purpose.

This is not in reference to any particular article but about the site in general-whataboutourdaughters.com.
The website has lots of great information but it is very disorganized. it seems as if there are 30 things going on at one time and I’m not sure how I can navigate all this information. Here’s a suggestion: Categorize your topics like this
About the Organization (for newcomers, who are you?)
Current Causes (letter writing/e-mail campaigns, protests, billboard campaigns)
Success Stories
Message Boards
Links
Here’s what you can do?
Etc.
You don’t need a blogspot, you need a real website. Continue doing great things. I’m getting all kinds of new ideas.
What a great post that I can identify with. The reason I took my child out of one Christian in particular after the 3rd grade was because a teacher (who was Black with issues) clearly was frustrated because she couldn’t find anything “wrong” with my daughter. She had straight A’s, she was obedient to the point they would discipline her for dumb stuff like her moving her feet while sitting down – mind you my daughter was 8 years old!
The final straw for me was at the last parent-teacher conference when the teacher told me in a very condescending voice, “Well, clearly your daughter doesn’t have any self-esteem issues.” My response to her, “You say that like it’s a bad thing.”
If you have a child who does what he or she is suppose to do, it’s O.K. to give them praise. One of the challenges in our community is that we have bought into the old school notion that says let’s be hard on them at home, so they won’t be surprised when they get beaten down out there in the real world. Hence, instead, what happens is our daughters then wind up “looking for love in the all the wrong places” because they can’t catch a break and get any love anywhere else like home, the church or school.
Love your babies the way no one else can love them. That doesn’t mean don’t guide them and discipline them when necessary. It means that a true parent’s guidance should always be clocked in love. Let’s take back the precious spirits of our Black children – both boys and girls!
Anon,
First, this isn’t an organization. IT is the work of one person.
Did I mention that I do not get paid to do this and I do it in my spare time?
Did I mention that until about 7 days ago, I thought that my little blog would fade back into the background?
Anon, can I expect a donation to hire a web page designer from you?
Thanks for the suggestion though. When I get time, I may redesign it, but for now, it will have to do.
Disorganized???? Just scroll down the page and read the Articles and then post a comment or two. It is just that simple. WT__??
Sidebar: Why do I have to type the word verication each time I post???? That would be my only complaint. I have to do it 2 or 3 times before I can post my comment. : – )
Attorneymom,
Funny, when I go on other blogs, I have to type word verification as well.
I’ve started allowing anon posts again. I guess I could take off the word verification since I still moderate the comments.
attorneymom, ask and it shall be granted. I took off the word verification. I don’t need moderation AND verification.
It’s sad that ladylike=uneducated and docile. This is really interesting, yet unsurprising. Hopefully, this study will call for change. Do you (men) really want a woman or (women) want to be a woman who is passive, domesticated, and unchallenging…and not to mention, uneducated? I first read about this on GlobalGrind.com’s News Tab. You should check them out.
